Cesc’s latest interview: more harm to the squad

In a week or so, Cesc Fabregas released a number of press interviews which in all honesty, I would have never expected from such a mature figure. Something like 10 days ago, he admitted his desire to play for Barcelona. Many insisted in saying that after the International break he would commit to Arsenal as he did a lot of times in the past after International matches. Well, those who thought so will be disappointed by Cesc’s latest remarks:
Our squad is a bit short on numbers and we are very young. Behind me there is Denilson, who is 20, or Alex Song who is 21. Theo Walcott is 19 and Samir Nasri 21.
It’s hard to imagine a midfield where I am the oldest member. We find it very hard to win matches, as we do not possess enough experience.
I scored 13 goals last season but then I had plenty of allies. Tomas Rosicky was around, Mathieu Flamini covered every blade of grass and Alexander Hleb was like a brother to me out there. The team played with a lot of skilful touches, we were as solid as a brick wall and our opponents would not get a look in.
Now none of those players are in the side and I feel like a rare being. We are more defensive-minded and sturdy as a team but we don’t play so much skilful stuff.
Is he right? Of course he is. But for the players he mentioned, Song and Denilson, it’s one thing to read a personal blog like mine where you’re getting low votes after matches and not care, but a completely different thing to read such comments from the man who is supposed to inject optimism and confidence in the side.
How would you react if you were Song and Denilson? How would you react knowing that you’re doing all you can to succeed, it’s not easy as you’re still inexperienced and then you hear your midfield colleague say things like that to the media?
I repeat, what he says is correct. Of course you can’t compare Song and Denilson with Rosicky, Flamini and Hleb but this is what we have now, these are the kids we have to teach and speaking like that will not help. This second interview, like the first one, has “I wish I left” written all over it and believe me, this is a very distructive approach.
Anyway, he’s a doubt for Saturday’s match after suffering a suspected broken nose in yesterday’s International match. It’s amazing how after every International break we have to assess the fitness level of 2/3 players. Let’s hope he recovers.
