Gallas three weeks, Silvestre three weeks, why so many injuries?

Submitted by Renzo on January 9, 2009 – 16:00 6 Comments

I think one of the most frustrating thing for an Arsenal fan is to read week after week about a new set of injuries. I’ve been thinking about this for a long time and a question I keep asking myself is why do we suffer so many injuries?

I know that sooner or later all teams suffer injuries, but it seems as if Arsenal suffer more injuries than any other side: in these last couple of seasons I remember Henry, Ljundberg, Rosicky, Diaby, Gallas, Adebayor, Van Persie, Vieira, Eboue, Toure and the list goes on, all players who for a reason or another were out for three, four, maybe more weeks. For obvious reasons, I omitted Eduardo and Fabregas as that’s plain misfortune.

Also, more than just the injuries per se, it’s that many of those who make a comeback suffer a reaction and are sidelined for even more weeks. It therefore comes to no surprise that Rosicky – already injury-prone before joining us – suffered an injury which started as “bizarre” and turned out to be a career-threatening one.

Maybe it’s just misfortune, maybe a curse or maybe I’m just overreacting, but I would be curious to know if I’m the only one who wonders why we suffer so many “three-weeks out” injuries when compared with many other top class teams. Could it be that I feel this way just because we lack depth and therefore we’re more affected by injuries? If I look at Chelsea, I know they had Alex, Terry, Carvalho injured and also Man. Utd. had Rooney, Ronaldo and Ferdinand at one stage, but although I have no statistics on this one, I still believe we suffer more injuries than almost any other Premiership side.
