Arsenal vs Fulham: Half-time report

Written by Chris on February 28, 2009 – 16:39

Commentators have been screaming how come the match is still goalless and they are right; an entertaining contest with plenty of chances with the main reason for that being that Fulham decided to actually attack rather than defend.

The first minutes of the match saw Fulham taking full advantage of badly-timed offside traps from the Arsenal defence and having two clear opportunities with Johnson missing the target in the first and then Simon Davies blasting it high from good range.

A couple of minutes later, it was Andy Johnson who did mighty well to get past Toure but he dragged his effort wide for the Arsenal to survive. Arsenal’s first opportunity came in the 12th minute. van Persie is picked brilliantly by an Arshavin cross but the Dutchman’s header is bravely blocked away by Schwarzer. The Russian was again provider for the Dutchman in the 33rd minute of the half but Robin’s effort was against saved by Schwarzer.

Samir Nasri, very active in the Arsenal midfield, also had a good shot at goal but hesitated and was blocked before getting his shot in.

Again, it’s been an entertaining half of football and had we converted at least one of the few opportunities we had, the second half could have been less tense. As it is, we will again come back after the break with the score reading no goals and with a lot of work still to be done. Diaby and Denilson are having a so-and-so game in midfield with Abou missing something with his end product and Denilson, unfortunately, going back to the sideway passing and missing when trying to pick a through pass.

Having said that, contrary to matches like last week’s, we’ve seen more movement up front, more creativity and I just don’t think this match will end 0-0. Maybe, just maybe, the forward line should be less shy to go for goal as the walking the ball in the net strategy is no longer working for Wenger’s side. Of course, for such thing to happen, the crowd should be more tolerant when a shot is dragged wide or a pass goes astray.
