Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger is renowned for having introduced a new style of game to the North London club which can put on show some breathtaking performances if on their day. And as this usually leads to his side scoring many goals, the Frenchman would like to see points being allocated according to the number of goals scored on the pitch.
Wenger told the club’s official magazine:
I would like to see a scheme brought in where you get more points for scoring more goals. In France they experimented with something before. When you scored three goals, you got an extra point. It was not a good system because you didn’t care how many goals you conceded.
Once you knew you had lost, you brought on five or six strikers just to go for goals, knowing that, even if you lost 10-3, you would get a point. If you lost 1-0 you got no points, but, if you lost 8-3 at home, you got one point, so it didn’t make any sense at all.
A fairer system would be three points for the victory as now, then extra points for your positive goal difference. For example, if you win 6-3, you get three points for the win, plus three more for the goal difference, while the team that loses gets none.
