[By our readers] Wenger, the misunderstood Pragmatist

There is no way Arsene will leave this summer. I give it a 0.0001% chance of happening. Why? First and foremost Wenger is a businessman and a loyal servant. He is completely principalistic, and if you need proof of that look back at our average age and / or our trophy cabinet. He would never break contract, even if the club was taken over he would not break his contract. He is a fantastic manager and from what I can tell from supporting Arsenal for 20 years and meeting him twice is that he is a lovely person. He has started a project here at Arsenal. You can almost call it an experiment if you like. He is determined to be proved right … again and to prove all his doubters wrong. If this was a film then this would be his lowest point and he would go on next year to win the treble (with a training / season montage in the middle), but then he WOULD retire (at least from Arsenal). And I do not see him moving to another club team when that fateful day does arise. I believe he would go on and manager France. Something he has also said he would love to do one day. He also isn’t a young man.

But back to the metaphor.

This isn’t a film so its very unlucky we will win the treble next season. But I am truly amazed at how many Arsenal supporters receive their education on football from the Daily Mirror. THEY MAKE IT UP PEOPLE. HONESTLY. THEY CAN DO THAT. Wenger is here until at least 2011 when his contract runs out. I personally think he will resign for another 3 years. What’s the point of standing by your principles and your belief of a system for so long and then abandoning it when the going gets tough? I think we will have success, but to do that we will need to sign some players. Not because the team is weak (although there are areas which need to be strengthened, which Arsene has pointed out) but because of the players we will lose during the close season. For sure we will sell Adebayor and Gallas. That’s a given. But a real shame if you ask me. Gallas is probably the best Centre Half we are capable of having at this very moment. And even if we sign a new centre back (which I am sure we will) it would be still fantastic to have Gallas around for another year. For his experience at least. People forget that when we beat Man United this season 2-1 at the emirates which people have tipped as the game of the season, that Gallas was our best player…by far…and that’s including two goal Nasri. Him and Silvestre where completely imperious that day and hardly allowed the silky skills and Ronaldo Rooney Park Tevez etc in sight of the Arsenal goal. It took a phenomenal goal from that new kid from United to score. And that was from a corner anyway as usual.

Regarding the fans behaviour this season I have to say I am a little disappointed. I think it can be massively counter productive to really pour scorn onto a unconfident, young and learning group of individuals. Because at times this season Arsenal have looked more like individuals than a team, which can be particularity concerning. But saying nasty things to them, and booing them off the pitch etc isn’t really on. OK I understand it has been a tough year (ok a tough 4 years) but look at Liverpool. For all their money and endeavours they also remain without silverware this season. As do Chelsea (at time of writing this). And I do not think we are a world away from the top three teams. I mean you can not look solely at the Chelsea and the United games towards the end of the season. We have a make shift defence / team in all those games. And because we conceded early on in both games against United the teams confidence was gone and we lost. Against Chelsea It was 1-1 until the 83rd minute when our very young and inexperience goal keeper made a small mistake with gigantic consequences.

But on the other side the Arsenal board can not expect there to be no repercussions for the teams failure of success. When 60,000 people each week part with a substantial part of their wages to watch a match, and happily pile money into the clubs pockets via expensive snacks drinks and merchandise they expect a return. Like any person in the world would. If you take money from someone on the basis that you will provide a service and then you do not delivery to your client or consumer they are going to be understandably annoyed.
Arsenal or more importantly Arsene’s commitment was that the club would play attacking free flowing football which would at the very least challenge for ALL major honours. And this time for the first time in the last 8 years he did NOT delivery that. Even the last four in all major comeptitons really isn’t too bad. But I think it is OK that the fans walkout before then end. They are only human and it is the only way to let the players know how they feel. Because week after week they come faithfully. And Arsene is the pivotal figure in all of this making it possible.

Would there be an exodus if he left. Unfortunately they would be, but not of gigantic proportions Possible three of four players max, and each of them would command hefty price tags. And as Arsenal supporters we can feel a little like we have a gun to our head. Wenger stays or we lose our team. But that simply wouldn’t happen, and when he does leave lets just hope there s an air of optimisms and belief when he does. A belief that staying at Arsenal is the right thing to do for their careers. If he can achieve that, then he truly will be the greatest manager of all time.

Agreed. The conduct of some arsenal supporters is disgraceful. They should relaise how lucky they are to support such a great team.

I think the word ‘pragmatist’ hits the nail on the head. I agree AW is a pragmatist.

The problem is that he’s been boxed in by the board, ably abetted by the fanners of the media, to look
like a whimsical dreamer, a complete Idealist. (He didn’t help by once saying that playing beautiful football is more
important than winning trophies………though I do agree with him. Everyone would say that the All Blacks are the best rugby team in
the world, but how often have they won the World Cup………….likewise Holland in football………who do we talk about , Holland or Germany, Johann or Klaus?)

But, he is much more of a pragmatist than an idealist, though maybe not the wily feral pragmatist AF.

The point is, he’s been painted as an Idealist, and that rankles with our Anglo-Saxon sensibilities, because we hate idealism.
It’s European philosophy dressed up in wigs and garters.
So in that sense I think AW has been stitched up.

But deeper down, I think some of us Arsenal fans, (not myself), resent something that is not easy to articulate. Namely
that we are not on a level-playing field, and that we as a club are victimized for being an outpost of the French Foreign Legion.

It rankles, but its the claim that dare not speak its name, because it sounds like whingeing,
and we Anglo’s hate whingeing (Spaniards whinge, English kick lumps).

It started with Patrick…..Roy was allowed to perform open knee surgery on the pitch, and that was good and healthy,
that was stout. But Patrick…..he was beyond the pale apparently. So we were treated to the same scenario time and again,
players provoked Patrick, and because he would stand up for himself, Patrick eventually reacted, and then he would be sent off.
He became a whipping boy for the media, and a soft target for referees. Arsenal inevitably suffered from his absences.
(but we as fans don’t whinge- because whingeing is not the English way).

It culminated in the end of our 49 match unbeaten run, with the stitch-up at Old Trafford.
Remember it? Getting kicked off the park………..probably to the absurdist tune of Alan Hansen
“Arsenal lacked courage , lacked bite……..”

I think the subtext of the small chorus of fans slating Arsene is this………….

“We are being victimized for being so French……the totem of a foreign invasion in our league,
and we are fed up with being victims. So let’s stop being so French…………”

OK, it must have some changes in our team, but we must recognize that this season was one of the worst in the recent years…not necessarily for our cabinet without any trophies (since four years), rather because our play style wasn’t the same… our squad is losing the Arsene’s style of playing. Most of our games were really boring (at least on TV)….this season the team was different to the previous years, the players have lost the … commintment? desire? … We need a team that entertain the audience, the fans, which plays a beautiful football, that the other teams feel envy of us, not for our trophies, but for our manner of playing football.
Obviously I want that AW stays, not only 2 years more…his project with young players is worth. I think that if we don’t have enough money to buy players (defenders basically), it will be very tough to fight for titles the next seasons. The budget of ManU, Chelsea, Liverpool, allows that teams to compete with great possibilities of winning different championships… we can only participate, without a real chance of claiming any trophy.
