I have to confess I’m bewildered by all the recent pessimism amongst Arsenal fans

Only month ago, I was one of the few who was criticising Wenger for sticking with the same squad over and over again rather than trying something new, and I was getting a lot of stick for that, with the main argument of those bashing me being that we were still in the Champions League and the future is bright as our players “are only 19 or only 20 or only 21″.
Now believe me, I’m usually very pessimistic, even when we win 4-0, so the fact that I’m optimistic today is supposed to mean something and I’ll explain why.
Since last season came to an end, very little has changed in the squad. Actually, the only changes are Thomas Vermaelen in terms of IN, Emmanuel Adebayor in terms of OUT and Samir Nasri in terms of injuries. Yet somehow, from the comments you guys posted lately, it seems we are in a desperate position where three-four signings are required to fight for silverware. And so I wonder where has all the optimism from last season gone, considering Adebayor very rarely featured last year.
Seriously, I’m reading a lot of plain, unneccessary pessimism. Yesterday I analysed our midfield situation now that Nasri is out. Today, allow me to analyse the whole squad, the regulars and the backups, hoping to alleviate the pain many of you are suffering from due to lack of signings.
We should be fine with Almunia and Fabianski. Lukasz may have made mistakes last season, especially in the F.A. Cup, but you can only learn from mistakes and as a backup, he should be fine.
The Back Four
Sagna on the right with Eboue as backup.
Clichy on the left with Gibbs as backup.
Gallas and Vermaelen at the center with Song, Toure and Djourou as backups.
Isn’t that enough? For me, it is.
Walcott, Arshavin, Carlos Vela, Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere and Tomas Rosicky. Don’t you think that’s enough for the wings? For the middle, we have Fabregas and Alex Song with Denilson and Diaby as backups. Now I don’t trust the last two I mentioned, hence the reason why I believe we should sign a holding midfielder, the only signing I am hoping for. If we do, we’ll be fine also in central midfield.
Van Persie, Eduardo, Carlos Vela, Bendtner and why not, Arshavin. Is that a poor quintet? I don’t believe so. If Andrei is pushed in a more attacking position, I believe he can be the 25-goal-per-season player we need, not to mention Van Persie who was monumental last season, especially in December-January and of course Eduardo.
So where is all the panic coming from? Don’t you believe in the squad we have? Well I do, provided we add someone in midfield, but at the back and up front we should be more than fine. Maybe I’m talking like this because I rate the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Carlos Vela very high, but if we are pessimistic before the season kick offs, well, I can’t imagine what it would be like when it does start.
Just remember one last thing, all the players who featured last season will start next year with one full season of experience under their belt, meaning that hopefully they can only improve on last season.
