Arsenal vs Celtic, 3-1: Arsenal secure Champions League spot

Written by Hasmat on August 27, 2009 – 12:05

Arsenal ensured their place in today’s Champions League’s draw with a mature display against Celtic at the Emirates.

The Gunners ran out 5-1 winners on aggregate and 3-1 on the night after Eduardo, Eboue and Arshavin all netted for the home side. Donati grabbed a late goal to give the Celtic faithful something to cheer about on a controversial night in North London.

Arsenal created early chances as they look to build on their first leg scores; with Eduardo and Denilson both going close for the home side. The first saw Bendtner shot palmed away by Boruc and Eduardo slid but failed to stab the ball into an empty net. Then Denilson combined well with Eboue before surging into the box but shot into the side nettings. Arsenal poured more pressure as Eboue tried to flick the ball and volley on the turn but the Ivorian saw his effort fly just wide of the post.

Turning point

Here came the turning point of the game as Eduardo skipped past his marker and was felled in the box. Penalty! On a seconds look at the TV monitor, pictures clearly show the Croatian conned the referee with a dense dive. Furious Celtic players made their feelings cleared to the striker, but he stepped up and tapped in from the spot with ease.

Celtic were broken and made little efforts with Fox curling a free kick well over the bar. Their night was further damaged when McDonald’s goal was rightly ruled out for offside after good work from Fortune.

Minutes before half time, Arsenal countered with Eboue running at pace into the Celtic half, passing to Eduardo on the right and the Arsenal striker curled a beautiful effort, destined for the top corner; only for Boruc to fly high and push the ball away to safety.

Mesmerising

After the break, the away side came out with an attacking mind, McGeady seeing his long rang effort swerve away from the goal. Arsenal responded immediately when Eduardo found himself running at the Celtic defence, switching from his left foot to his right but scuffing his shot well wide. Bad miss!

The home side were in total control as they made their possession count. Clichy played Bendtner on the left and he cleverly back heeled to Diaby, who found Eboue and the Ivorian turned to his right foot before slamming home. Emirates erupt!

Arshavin came off the bench to add a third after good work from Denilson, and the Russian showed pure class as he swivelled past his marker before placing the ball into the corner of the net. Celtic were faltering and this could have been a rout if Aaron Ramsey had not seen his cheeky clip palmed away by Boruc.

Celtic added a late consolation after Donati executed a magnificent volley from an acute angle into the corner via a deflection off the post. Despite the early controversy, this game was too much of a one sided tie for Celtic to have a real shout against the decision. Arsenal await an exciting Champions League draw this afternoon at 5pm.
