Tologolese striker puts in a master performance to prove a point to his former employees.
Emmanuel Adebayor inspired his new team to victory over Arsenal to keep their 100% start to the season.
The Manchester City striker scored past his former club, and celebrated wildly as he maintained his personal record of one goal in every game so far this season.
This was City’s first real test of the season and it was the away side that started the brightest. William Gallas headed a far post header over the bar and the home side escaped. Arsenal have been tested by set plays all season and this proved no different as Gareth Barry’s free kick was headed by Richards. Almunia pushed the ball onto the post but powerlessly saw the ball go into the net after it rebounded off the back of his head.
For all the possession Arsenal had in the first half; they could not match it by creating anymore chances until the introduction of Rosicky after the break.
The Czech returned from a long term injury and made an instant impact. Gallas brought Shay Given into a good save with a near post header before Rosicky passed through to Van Persie. The Dutchman rolled highly rated defender Lescott and drove a shot into the corner of the net. LEVEL!
The crowd expected Arsenal to mount some serious pressure but no one read the scrip expect Adebayor. First the giant talisman brought down Van Persie in an ugly challenge which saw the Dutchman require treatment in the face. Arsenal looked for the winner and pushed men forward.
Richards countered and turned inside Song before squaring to Bellamy; the Welshman took one step to steady his body before swiftly curling the ball into the net. City of Manchester Stadium erupted!
Arsenal were shell shocked and Adebayor took full advantage; taking on three men before squaring to Wright-Phillips but somehow the little Englishman put the ball wide. City pushed forward again and this time a cross from the right saw Adebayor, unmarked, head magnificently into the bottom corner. No chance for Almunia as the former Arsenal hitmen race off with glee towards the Arsenal fans and slide down. A stupid celebration that may be punished for trying to provoke the opposition.
The City striker was not finished just yet; he deflected a shot off the line from Abou Diaby as Arsenal looked for a quick reply. The Gunners were given a counter attacking lesson when Bellamy picked up the ball midway through his own half; sprinted into the opposition defence before slipping in Wright Phillips. This time the Englishman finished beautifully as he clipped the ball over the advancing Almunia and sent out a clear message to the premier league. Manchester City are here to challenge for the title!
Arsenal kept pushing and got a consolation goal through Rosicky after a good link up with Fabregas. Van Persie curled an awesome shot onto the post but Arsenal went home empty handed just like two weeks ago.
