They came, they tried, and they failed.
Arsenal bagged all three points against Greek side Olympiakos to cement their place at the top of Group H.
Robin Van Persie and Andrei Arshavin grabbed the goals for the home side after a dominant display pleased the Emirates crowd.
The score line did not deem fair as keeper Nikopolidis kept the Gunners at bay. In a frantic first half, Clichy burst down the flank before finding Arshavin, whose shot was collected by the goal keeper.
Then Fabregas ran forward and smashed a shot from outside the box, watched it rebound against the crossbar to Rosicky, but the Czech saw his drive saved by the opposing keeper. The Gunners were wasteful as Ashavin and Fabregas failed to beat Nikopolidis, but after the break the away team almost took the lead.
Corner swung in and Mellberg rose highest to head goalwards, only for Vito Mannone to palm away the ball as the Italian continued his fantastic form. Arsenal countered, passes in quick successions as Fabregas found Eboue, quick trickery to find Van Persie but the Dutchman’s shot was again saved by the keeper.
The home side poured forward as Vermaelen headed wide of goal. The crowd frustrated and nervous then gasped as Gallas found himself one-on-one with the keeper when he collected Van Persie’s rebound, but the French defender could not finish- he was initially flagged offside!
Eduardo and Vela on to give more pace and creativity to the Arsenal line up. The wall finally broke after much endured pressure when the inspiring Faregas found Eduardo, who drove into the box and squared the ball to the onrushing Van Persie to score the opening goal. Relief all round the stadium.
The impressive Arshavin capped a superb display when he combined with Fabregas to meet the Spaniard’s cross and cheekily back heel the ball past a hapless Nikopolidis. Man of the match Fabregas ran the play and almost added a third when he dragged a shot wide of goal late on.
Arsene Wenger was pleased with his side domination as he watched Arsenal maintain their 100% winning start in the Champions League.
