Thomas Vermaelen furious after West Ham game, “They scored two times out of nothing and that makes it really bad”
Arsenal and Belgium defender Thomas Vermaelen was left bitterly disappointed after the Gunners failed to get all three points from last Sunday’s game away at West Ham.
Speaking to Arsenal TV Online, the 23-year old declared that the side should never let a two-goal lead slip away.
He said:
I’m very disappointed. I think we should win today. Two goals out of nothing I think.
In my point of view I think the referee made a big decision by deciding it was a penalty. I thought it was no penalty, so I’m very disappointed.
We were 2-0 up and we were comfortable and in the second half as well we didn’t give any chance away to West Ham. They scored two times out of nothing and that makes it really bad.
We should have had three points today and I’m too disappointed to see the positive.
It’s like Tuesday, we don’t give too many chances away but they scored two times and that is not good.

Varmaelen tell them that they should be alert in 90 minutes not 70 minutes. How do you relax in the last minutes of the game if you are a professional footballer. You want to disappoint arsenal fans and management too this season! We are going to mark those players who are failing arsenal at the pitch. They must leave next season.
Hey you…..you want them to leave next season???/ right so you as who?? all arsenal players are good….for me arsene wenger for the match against west harm…delayed to take a decision to make a sub a EDU was and BENT were on the bench and DIABY was so tired at least u should ask wenger to make a replacement alwayson 70th minute again Alex Song needs a rest please and GAlass too needs a rest …but Arsenal will make it i know..
I can only agree Arsenal need to off load some players that are not up to the standard required for silver. We have two choices as I see it. Play Ramsey, Vela, Nasri, Wilshere, Watt, Gibbs and Walcott (if he ever gets fit enough), support them with Rosicky, Fabregas, Asharvin, Vermaelen, Gallas, Eduardo, Van Persie, other than that buy in January, especially a established goalkeeper(if available). None of this will happen ofcourse.
uhm .. I got a feeling that TV is starting to feel a piss with Diaby mistakes …
dear editor asrenal rael cost us little marking in the defence. central defenders are not tight marking they commit silly mistakes. they should not depend too much on refreees. diaby is holdingh ball too much
Its good to see players getting angry atleast. On tuesday it was oh well it happens and now it has happened again they seem upset as they should be. Hopefully this means they will stop switching off and day dreaming. I was incredibly upset at the lack of enthusiasm. Some players look as if they just didn’t want to play. I like Thomas first and foremost for his attitude and leadership qualities. As he becomes more influential I believe our defence wil get better. Nice to see him and Clichy coming out and showing some drive.
I do how ever believe we will add to the squad over the next 12 months. One because Gallas is getting older and Wenger will want a ready replacement with some experience. A partnership with Vermaelen in mind. Secondly because we are under pressure to win something this year. Song will be going to the African cup of nations and we don’t have a ready replacment. This will be during a hard time in our fixture list for him to be away and travel weary. Thirdly is Senderos can not break through Wenger will opt to sell him as well as possibly Silvestre who is also moving on in years. I see a new look defence for Arsenal sooner then later.
How did arsenal relax in the last minutes? Their defending was fine. What can you do when the ref gives freekicks incorrectly?
Davi,
Do you really think that Arsenal’s defending was fine? To me they looked like headless chickens. From the moment that Mannone handed the Hammers the first goal the rest of the defence fell apart, they obviously lost all confidence in the keeper and totally panicked.
Following the abject surrender to AZ Alkmaar, I would have thought the team had learnt a lesson but it is obvious that either they are too arrogant to believe that a “small ” team like West Ham might dare to put up a fight or they are too thick to understand that they need to play for the entire match and not coast along having gone into an early lead.
Arsene Wenger was furious after the match. The time for him to show his anger was at half-time when he should have been kicking a***s in the dressing room.
Why is it that the team can retain possession for long periods during the first seventy five minutes of a game but resort to hoofing the ball upfield and giving away possession during the crucial closing stages.
We need a captain on the pitch who can generate a calming influence on his team-mates, Fabregas is a wonderful player but is most definitely not the man to captain the side. Perhaps Thomas Vermaelen should be the skipper.
Carlton Cole was the man of the match for his appetite and industry. Also Fabregas never really got into the game at all, and we were reduced to a couple of potshots in the second half – apart from van Persie’s late chance. Credit for that has to go to Upson and the West Ham defensive midfield.
The penalty was soft, but it was a correct decision. The main reason we didn’t win, unfortunately, was another error at the back, this time from the inexperienced Mannone who batted the free kick one-handed straight back at the advancing Cole, when it would have been easier to use two hands to hold it or else push it around the post. If we can eradicate these errors we will be doing ourselves a massive favour, and it won’t place so much pressure on the forward line to score 3 or 4.
Carlton cole probably deserved to be man of the match overall, but he dived for the penalty. It’s like the rooney dive that ended our unbeaten run. He felt the slightest touch and went over. Not a penalty in a million years. There’s one rule for arsenal and another for everyone else it seems when it comes to penalties
It wouldn’t have been a penalty if we were playing in the courtyard but in professional football, that type of contact results in a penalty. Alex Song showed inexperience there, especially considering Cole was with his back facing the goal.
So why is there outcry over the eduardo dive, and not over this? There was contact on eduardo apparently, but he clearly dived still.
The thing that annoys me is the way it’s always framed as arsenal are just inexperienced but nobody really talks about the fact the ref got it wrong again (on more than one occasion), and the player dived.
On the free kick as well, hines just ran into diaby (who actually touched the ball) and the ref gives them a free kick. What can we do about that?
Just watching it again, parker tried to dive for a pen as well. They were diving all over the place and the ref was happy to oblige them in the end.
They knew they werent going to get anything fairly, so decided to try to cheat us. And arsenal being inexperienced cant seem to stand up too well to cheating – I thought that was the ref’s job!
Davi- I don’t think you’re being fair on Cole or the referee. There is definitely contact, and a lot more contact than with the Eduardo challenge. It’s one of those challenges that outside of the box is going to be a free-kick 10 times out of 10, but in the box is usually waved away.
Why was it given in this case? Given that the ref had dismissed penalty claims for the challenge on Parker, he probably felt like he ‘owed’ West Ham one. And I disagree completely that Parker dived- it was pretty much a stone-cold PK.
Chris is right- Song was inexperienced. He probably figured that because Cole hadn’t gone down under rough stuff before, he wouldn’t do it this time. But obviously he will in the box- it’s just poor defensive play.
That is not to say the refereeing was good- I agree that he was shocking all night.
Cole was diving around only moments before that by the corner flag!
He was strong as an ox when it suited him, light as a feather when losing control of the ball. Basically a drogba in the making. Good luck to him, I respect the skill he showed in the game, but his diving should be highlighted.
The ref has to be stronger though. He responded to crowd reaction.
Parker did dive. Again, he may have brushed a defender, although i didnt really get that from the replay, but he threw himself down as he knew he couldnt keep the ball.
Outside the box, the cole one may be given as a freekick, not 10 times out of 10 tho. Just like in the actual case, it depends if the referee buys the dive!
Oh ! now Mannone is a rookey, not so long ago he was a hero after just two games. When it comes to goalkeeping heroics come second to experience, we need an experienced goalkeeper between the posts before its too late, for now Almunia is all we got.
mate whos saying that mannone is a rookie he is still a good keeper for his age but he made a very bad mistake anyone will tell you that why push the ball to the where the danger is why not push it to the corner or behind th posts. But i agree with davi i think both decisions were absolutely ridiculous to be honest, I just dont get it if a player falls in the box with no contact at all then its classed as a dive and a yellow card should be given straight away RIGHT? that didnt happen why not? because we were away had that been at home that wouldve been a yellow card, carlton cole went down far too easy for me and that penalty was given why because the previous one was not given i think the boys played good to be honest i agree with some of you guys saying wenger should’ve changed diaby and arshavin not because they were making mistakes but because they were very tierd and arshavin was straight poor seriously, but he left it too the last 10 mins, eboue had another very good game 1 or 2 mispasses but overall comfortable diaby was ok but i thought the subs shouldve been introduced when west ham started regaining their confidence, but anyways thats football van persie shouldve burried his last chance but overall he was very good for us, hopefully tomorrow we can beat liverpool again with the youngsters even though they will be fired up since the united game. CANT WAIT COME ON ARSENAL!!!
Wenger!!! wenger!!
The manager is to blame for the draw with whu.No one else.No matter what,Arsene like to send from the bench only on the 70th minute. To all the hype that you receive i never buy this attitude.WENGER you are the one that you can see that your team it doesn`t kill game not individual player wether is captain or not.You suppose to read the situation early and send a proper sub at the right time not your stiff attitude on sending subs at the 70th or 80th minutes.Ridiculous absolutely pathetic.I dont see any reason why if not change tactics when your opponent is changing his .Sorry mate you lost it and you suppose to have the gut to come out and yourself clear instead you choose to blame referee and the usual laments that the team has switched off BLA-BLA-BLA.I am hundred per cent sure other mediocre managers woul have done something and win it.
The defence is liking goals what have you done to improve it ?Yes you brought Vermalen but still you got already tens of goals leaked and we are on october.NO! No! NO! my friend they can hype you praise for the past and so do i but we are leaving in present not yesterday.
No question the team you assemled is technically high but the lack of passion, attitude the burning to win is not there. This players they play the way they play because it is in them not because they are really passionate. The sum of all arsenal players it does not make half of what the passion Rooney got.Otherwise yours and the players performance has shown time and again that you cannot win trophy.I love arsenal football club and i love to see winning trophy but i am convinced that there is no way that i can expect anything that the fourth place as usuall. You said it is time to deliver and if you fail simply the club has to move on even without you.An idiot might say Oh its only a draw and it is only one game !! No mate enough is enough is me answer because there is no reason why we should not win the game rather than to blame to our pathetic attitude.
To ask your head it was highly questionable recently but yourself know well indeed your time is definetly over if you don`t bag the premiership title.
mate im pissed off too but firstly calm down dont blame everything on arsene if we won that game you wouldnt of said nothing, i blame it on the ref, you talk about passion these guys want to win it with the current players and have mostly stuck together for four years minimum with no trophy thats passion mate. You talk about rooney but hold on the passion he shows is anger i agree but if these arsenal players behave in the same way as rooney thats a yellow every game for every player mate, our foreign players cant behave in that way believe it or not.Remember sagna at old trafford when he shouted at the ref and was waving his hands with anger from more than 20 meters he got a yellow when rooney is shouting and pointing at every pillar of any stadium nothing is given to him so before you mention the words passion and rooney just stop there. The team played very good I agree wenger should’ve made the change but at 70th was the right time just when the west ham fans started to liven up the place to fill their players with confidence but wenger stuck to his choices but that didnt loose us the game the game was lost because of the referee’s poor decisions like not giving a yellow to s. parker for diving. FULL STOP
I don’t blame Wenger completely because the players need to play, but I think he should have seen the lackadaisical play from the team in the second half and brought on other players earlier. Young players want to make a name for themselves, or a gu like Eduardo wants to reshow his worth after injury, so they would have injected more spirit into the team when up 2-0. I think even before the first goal, most people saw that Arsenal had started to think the game was won and had ‘turned off’.
It was all the managers fault – total complacency on his part and constantly fielding Diaby for full 90mins even when he clearly sees the guy’s worn out and not always improving despite the number of games he’s had. Secondly, he (Wenger) always uses the same old tactics for example, making substitutions in the 70th and above minutes. That way, he can never get to kill off the game early to avoid putting pressure on himself & the fans.
Arsenal will continue to have trophy drought if the manager doesn’t change his way of taking long to think while the game’s going on – he’s got to think first the way Mourinho and the capello’s of this world do. Always have plan B if A’s failing.
why dont u apply manager’s position replace wenger if u know better then wenger…??
its football dude,sometime u win,sometime u lost..when we win,u happy,when we lost u got angered and start to blame others…
if u call urself as fans, just give 100% support to teams..no one want to lost but its unpredictable..
you can analyse and moan as much as you like but at the end of the day it boils down to one thing, the english premier league.
A league like no other in the world, a league where some of the top players in the world rub shoulders with well travelled journeymen, where up and coming teenagers mix it with players that are past their sell by date but still have enough class to squeeze half a game in before being subbed.
where else would you find clubs like Hull City, Burnley and Stoke City competing with uber teams from Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool and manage to come away with three points to make the bookies smile.
This game may be 90% predictable but its the 10% chance of upset that keeps us guessing to whether our side will fly or flop.
So leave old Wenger alone, he’s the best manager you’ve ever had but now you take him for granted, one day he will move on and then you will really find out how hard it is to replace such a class act.
The Hammers may be second bottom but they are a good side who play football for 90 minutes under the up and coming zola, their current position is false, so just be thankful that you didn’t meet them in full flight, as they will be a force to be reckoned with later in the season (it’s a good thing optimism)
Oh and this will all be forgotten after you stuff spurs this weekend
Vermaelen was disappointed??? Me too!!!
And then, guys, we need score more goals, and we must avoid relaxing with an advantageous score…the game finishes at last injured minute of 2nd half, not before!!!
It’s an important advert, now that it comes the match against Spurs…
