Wolves’ day-after thoughts: Bring on Chelsea and the top of the table!

Submitted by Chris on November 9, 2009 – 17:30 18 Comments

I know that day-after should have been Sunday(I was busy) and I know that we have to play Sunderland before facing our lucky and loved-by-referees rivals, but I simply can’t wait for November 29th to come. After watching our game on Saturday and their game on Sunday, I am more than convinced that it will be a two-horse race this season and in three weeks, the first chapter will be written at the Emirates.

The Wolves Game

Before the game, I wanted the lads to cancel all the poor away games we’ve had this season by winning easily and apart from the first 20 minutes where I was worried that was not going to happen, the scoreline was indeed the one I was hoping for. It was a nice open game and credit to Wolves for keeping their word and go for it rather than park the bus.

I’m not sure if the late conceded goal was the result of the team relaxing knowing that the game was won, and hopefully, something like that will not happen when the score is goalless or we’re ahead by only one goal.

Aaron Ramsey

Before the game, many were surprised to see Aaron starting and Alex Song on the bench but I think after the 90 minutes, many are now understanding what Aaron can bring to our midfield. Many remember I wanted Aaron to be involved more this time last season but never happened unfortunately. This season, he’s guaranteed 15-20 games and that’s nice to see.

Now there are two areas in which Aaron can be judged: when going forward and when defending had to be done. Offensively, he showed what he’s best at: good with the ball in his feet, great vision and very unselfish.

Defensively, I was also impressed. In the first 20 minutes when we were hanging on, he was one of the few who was full of running and doing the dirty work right. What was nice to see is that in previous games where he was involved with the “regular” side, he used to keep the ball more than he should, as a way to show how good he is, but on Saturday, he was more mature in his role and meant business by giving it all in all areas of the pitch.

Adverts

A small note on adverts. As you surely saw, we added a banner at the very top of the website. As per our advertising policy, we never place adverts inside articles so as not to distract your reading pleasure and this will not change.

Looking Forward

Our beloved Arsenal will be back on November the 21st, day on which we face Sunderland, away from home. I will take advantage of this break to make some minor adjustments to the website whilst the rest of the team will still keep you updated with Arsenal news, especially those which we maybe missed in the last week or so.

Until then, dear friends, take care.

will walcott be back 4 chelski?

I am sure all Gunners fans enjoyed watching the manner in which Arsenal secured the points at Wolves as I did.
Now the media are asking just exactly how many goals Arsenal are capable of scoring this season? At the moment they are on target for a century, that would be fantastic don’t you all think!
If they did do it, it would be something Man Utd etc have not done, much like the championship winning ‘Invincibles’ record of winning the trophy without losing a match was. Really tremendous! made all the better I might add because Man Utd have not done it. Indeed no one has, and lets hope that Arsenal are the next team to do it again.
Statistically, scoring 100 is a possibility right now. However, if you look at the teams Arsenal have scored the big numbers against so far this season Spurs apart. They have all been against teams who are in the bottom half of the table currently. Against Spurs and the 2 Manchester’s Arsenal scored a total of 6 goals over the 3 games, which is not a bad haul against quality opposition.
Realistically, Arsenal will not have a run of games against almost exclusively bottom half teams like they have to date again. Indeed the next few games coming up starting with Sunderland away and then Chelsea will be mostly against teams in the top half. So scoring goals at the present rate becomes a tall order.
We live in hope of course, but it is not going to be as easily achieved as the media are inferring.
Interested in hearing what others think! Gunners and fans of any team, it does not matter.

Media make such claims knowing that people would then bet on at.

I think Fabregas is right when saying:
“There is no point scoring goals like we are until December and then it ends. That will not win the title.”

      • Gunner says:

Well Chris you are right there,
and furthermore I think the next few games will give us a pretty good clue as how well Arsenal will cope. They play Sunderland away then Chelsea and very soon after that they come up against a ‘no nonsense difficult to play against’ Stoke team with an ‘I don’t care how good YOU think you are’ sort of attitude. Then Liverpool not long after that.
It will be very interesting to see what sort of a goals haul they get over the next 5 or 6 matches! Especially when we consider the sort of customers they will be up against ie these 4, and a few more too.
I still think Arsenal have the class to score a lot of goals against these sort of teams. However I am just not sure if they will be keeping up an average of 3 or so per match.
If any team can do it Arsenal can.
If Arsenal play 100% to the Wenger philosophy as they have been doing. I think they can beat these teams but they cannot deviate at all from their out and out attacking style. If they do, then I cannot see them beating Chelsea but if they stick to the offensive strategy shown till now. They might just be the better team!

Since 2001 one only two teams in the PL have scored even 80 plus goals (Arsenal twice I believe and Man U three times). Nobody has even reached 90. We are almost halfway to 80 with 44 more needed in 27 games. Even 2 goals per game average (easily attainable) we would get to 90 goals (hasn’t been done this decade). Two goals per game is a little more than we’ve average the last few seasons, but what we easily reached earlier in the decade. It would be great to see us approach 100, but I would be happier if we score a few less and keep fewer goals against so we have better balance and the ability to win 1-0 matches.

  • Erick says:

Chris wil Denilson be back for the Chelsea Clash i think the defensive midfield of Song and him is what we need

    • Ace says:

Yeah Chris and what about Vela, Traore & Bendtner I’m worried if the Mexican doesnt get enuff playing opportunities we might lose him like we almost loaned out Merida! I feel the team is performing well because of the pressure on their positions look at Almunia vs Don Vito & Fabianski, Clichy vs Gibbs. I even think Diaby would start performing once he realizes the likes of Eastmond, Merida and Frimpong might just start gunning for his position.

      • Chris says:

Denilson will be fit to start since he’ll be back during the 2nd week of international break and so will the rest, with the exception on Nicklas who will undergo surgery.

Carlos was very unlucky to suffer injuries when he would have surely played.

  • Adam Smith says:

Well I wake up to find that Bedntner is to have an operation which may keep him out until January.Add to that Walcott,Diaby,Clichy,Fabianski and Vela all with no definite return, and on top of that a mixture of meaningless friendlies and two vital qualifiers for France and Russia, so to pre empt the squad for the Sunderland game is a little early.

Surely not the injury curse is going to strike with a vengance yet again.

    • fi says:

i HATE to hear that france is playin this weekend because we’re basically like french team in england. crap it hope no one gets injured….please….=/

    • Erick says:

Adam smith Walcot wil be back after the international break Diaby, Clichy, B52 and Fabianski are all out nobody has been talking about Djourou am worried and been thinkin he can be quality Defensive midfield especialy in january when Song wil be ACN

      • Adam Smith says:

        Hello Erick,

All indications are that Djourou will not play again this season or at the very earliest April.

Off subject, well done to Bedntner for being Danish Footballer of the Year.

        • Erick says:

Thanx Adam so we cant afford to get an injury on the two central defenders but i would relish to see a Thomas and Senderos partnership i have a feeling it would be fantastic keep the faith lad

  • Davi says:

Chris, I was wondering if u could give your opinon on why no-one is talking about evans’ foul on drogba? that was the worst challenge I’ve seen since the eduardo one, with the difference that evans’ was clearly pre-meditated! Surely he should receive some sort of extra ban for that given the current climate?
It just seems to have slipped under the radar (thanks largely to ferguson taking the heat) – but its infuriating to keep hearing these united players bitching about being unfortunate on refereeing decisions, when I think you’d agree, arsenal has had it much, much worse in big games recently
