Carles Puyol, “Cesc would have his reasons, to go, and would have the same opportunities with Barca”

Submitted by Jeffrey on November 18, 2009 – 3:00 13 Comments

Barcelona defender Carles Puyol added more controversy over the future of Cesc Fabregas, declaring the Arsenal captain would have the same opportunities he has in London if he moves to Spain.

The 31-year old Spanish International said:

Cesc would have his reasons, to go, and would have the same opportunities [with Barcelona] that he has at Arsenal. The market dictates the value and you pay a lot for players of a high level but if he comes I hope we don’t pay much.

It is not easy for him to talk much because he has his club, although it is clear that we would like because he’s a great friend and one of the best players in the world. He knows the philosophy of Barcelona very well.

I realy get sick of this. I understand the link and such back to Barcelona but realy does every player have to come out and speak on the issue. It is just frustrating and unsettles some of the fans. It can even affect players off the pitch and team mates (like the Lescott saga). I wish they could just respect Cess and shut up. Something needs to be done simply because it is unfair Cess has to pledge his loyalty every week cause somone else in the Barca camp speaks out.

If Cess finishes his contract and then decides to leave I would understand and would be ok ( since Merida, Ramsey and such in the wings would be ready) but do hope he goes to Real Madrid for some rediculous sum simply because I lose a lot of respect for Barca over this because they know what they are doing and don’t care!

    stinks of selective translation

I loathe Barcelona because of their way to unsettle players. Every single week someone from Barca steps up and speaks to the press about how they want Fabregas to join them. They are constantly reminding us how we ‘tapped him up’, then they try to do the same with our players(Aneke and Afobe). Besides, they also ‘tapped up’ players like Jeffren, Giovani, Pedro, Jonathan and Messi but they seem to suffer from bad memory. They like to portray themselves as being honest but in fact they aren’t different than other football clubs. I can’t stand their ‘holier than thou’ attitude anymore. I know Fabregas will join Barca someday but the Catalan club can’t seem to wait. They are shameless in their pursuit of players and I fear our captain may leave us very soon.

We just have to counter these things with making our own hoaxes on the internet.

We just do this by saying: a spokesman said that Cesc would love it if Xavi comes to the Arsenal. Or : “Someone close to Messi admitted that if he ever would leave Barcelona for another club it would be Arsenal”.

Then we make a big headline of it, put it on every blog on the Arsenal and give them something of their own cooking.

You guys just don’t understand what cesc fabregas means to barcelona. These players don’t just come out and say these thngs, they’re asked, they get asked all the time in pre match interviews, when they do interviews for newspapers cesc is the first question, if they lose a match they’re asked if it’s because they don’t have cesc, or that they would have won with cesc in their team. I’m in barcelona at the moment and have been for the last year. There’s nike billboards everywhere with him on it. Anything got to do with the spanish team has a picture of him on it.
The sports pages of newspapers often have more coverage of his performances for Arsenal than they do of the barcelona team.
I see youngsters everywhere with barcelona replica kit with his name on it. You ask any kid on the street which footballer they like to be like it’s cesc.
There is no English player that compares to his stardom, rooney is close but nowhere near. Catalonians see barcelona as their national team and cesc as the footballing leader of the catalans, when they watch spain play, they see the catalan players as being better than anyone else on the team. They watch spain play for cesc and wave catalan flags when spain wins.
Trust me, the fact that cesc is not yet a barcelona player is a very contentious issue here, if i wear my van persie arsenal replica kit all people want to talk to me about is cesc and try to make me realize as an arsenal fan how greatful they are for wengers mentorship but that people should play where their heart is.

Thanks Bongo, these are the sort of comments I love to read.

Barcelona, their players and their staff are just saying how good and how much they want Cesc. What’s wrong in that? As I said in one of my previous articles, Barcelona ain’t the only ones after Cesc, the whole Europe is.

Let’s hope we soon start reading the same on Fran Merida, it would mean he became a top player, the day we do.

      • Cameron says:

You both put me to shame. I can agree on some terms but I as many other Arsenal fans are so protective over Cess. It shows how much he means to us in a way and it would seem like a huge defeat. I should however consider it shows Fabregas’ true class. I believe it may have something to do with the whole real madrid and c.ronaldo saga oh how easy it is to forget this is a different club and player.

  • Geezer1287 says:

There are two teams that predominantly play the mostbeautiful football in the world, Barcelona and Arsenal. The difference between the two is that Barca lack class, respect and honest. Why is it that every time they elect a president they say “Cesc will be the lynchpin our team if im president”.

I cannot ever remember an occasion that any of our players or managers has come out and tried to unsettle players from another team, wenger has dignity and is courteous, he does business as business should be done. I hope this has a negative effect on cesc, and the more they talk the longer he will stay.

If cesc meant that much to barcelona, why did they sell himin the first place, why didnt they loan him out if they knew he would be a star in the future. The truth is, they must have thought he wouldnt be good enough to cut the mustard, no one refered to cesc as “16 yr old wonder kid cesc signed for arsenal” at the time, cesc had a lower profile than ramsey and walcott. Barca realise hes a great player now, if he stayed at barca it would be a different story, he woulda still been on the bench now with no big match experience, and probably sold on. I would hate to see cesc rot on the bench, long live your arsenal career!

  • BillikenGooner says:

I understand the feelings of Barca, the club and their fans, but this has to be done in good-faith. I believe, most every Arsenal fan believes that Cesc will return to Barca one day… that he *wants* to return to Barca.
However, why not let him decided when?
All this does is cause rank feelings with Arsenal fans (and probably the Club) even if all these are are answered questions to the press.
They know Cesc. They play with him on the national team. They can just say, “It would be nice, but Cesc will decide his own future. Hopefully it involves returning to Barcelona soon.” Perhaps it is all ‘lost in translation’, but it is getting annoying.
I love Barca as a Club, but the press down there and now some of their players are making me wish Real Madrid really does get into the bidding war that is coming this summer and Puyol’s statement of:

” The market dictates the value and you pay a lot for players of a high level but if he comes I hope we don’t pay much. ”

turns out massively wrong and we hold them to ransom. At 22, we know his quality (which is getting better) and if he is that loved/needed… between Kaka and Ronaldo money for him.

He was there but ya’ll never saw what he got in him, but know Arsene take him and give him the opportunity that he needs to be what he is now you all need him back. I am sick and tired of all this crap. Why does all Barca player coming out to say something is this a plan that you all have to get him back. Henry say’s not to let him go so we are not letting him go!!
