Andrey Arshavin, “Arsene needs to buy new players and expensive ones”
Arsenal midfielder Andrey Arshavin believes manager Arsene Wenger should sign important players if the Gunners are to fight for silverware this season.
Arsenal qualified for the next stage of the Champions League with ease after a 2-0 win over Standard Liege but the Russian is quoted as saying by the News of the World:
Arsene needs to buy new players and expensive ones. All the talented and inexpensive players are already with us and the players who could really boost our power are all costly to bring in.
I realise that if we buy a star, someone in the squad will be rejected but this is fair. It is the manager’s job to decide such things.
On his overall performance this season, the Russian added:
I can say that this season the only game I played really well was against Olympiacos. In the rest of the matches I was not so good. I was not dynamic enough in performances.

No one can say that he doesn’t speak his mind. lol He is brutally honest in every interview and it’s hard not to agree with him here. We already have a deep youth system which can provide us with a strong base for years to come, but if we want to improve our chances of winning titles, more experienced players are needed specifically in the midfield and another center back because Gallas is getting old. The only way I would disrupt our attacking options is if we decide to go after David Villa who is arguably the best forward in the world right now.
How many new and expensive players should arsenal buy?
Dear Andre you are right of course, there is a future situation which seems to be well covered but the immediate future, well I wouldn`t bet on it. When you say expensive I guess you`re thinking thirty maybe forty million pounds, David Villa would fit into that category maybe but not at Arsenal. If Wengers youth policy is to work we are going to have to wait two maybe three years I can`t see him changing his way of thinking. If he can find the answer for between twelve and fifteen million he might be tempted.
I like that Arshavin speaks his mind but he should be well aware that HE was brought in to be the ‘experienced’ big time attacking player. He’s done quite well in his role but the team needs MORE from him and he has MORE to give. Perhaps rather than deflect the role onto an unsigned player that may/may not be in Arsene’s plans he can step up more and take the role on himself.
In an ideal world we’d have more solid cover at centerback so as not to rely on Sylvestre, Senderos, (or Djourou) if Vermaelen or Gallas go down. Rosicky is ‘experienced’ as well and we could use more from him too. The clinical finishing we all expect from Eduardo has been lacking of late, RvP’s injury is really hurting since he’d been on a roll, I don’t see Bendtner as the prolific goal scoring threat so perhaps the player we need is an all out striker, poacher, proven goal scorer. Those players are expensive and likely disqualified from playing with us in the Champions League because they’d likely already have played for another squad. In addition, that’s not really Wenger’s way. We’d love to see it happen but it’s not very plausible. So, we’re back to square one; relying on the experience we currently have. Arshavin, the ball is in your court…
I hate the fact tht gooners everywhere love to kiss this guy’s ass.He is the Most expensive player in the squad and so far his goal return is not so good, his assists have also gone down.Dont get me wrong people Arshavin is a good player but whenever the game is not going his way he is always lain back and seems disinterested in the field. Now that he has that one player has to be relegated to the bench if a new ‘EXPENSIVE’ signing comes through, what makes him think he would not be the victim??Arshavin should realise that at Arsenal everybody is equal and so he should not consider himself superior to the rest of the squad. You are a good player so help us win trophies instead of talking about stuff that will bring down the young players morale.
Andrey is just hungry for success, that’s all. Remember he was tracked by Barcelona as well where he would have won a lot had he joined last season.
You think he would get a place in the Barca team ahead of Messi, Henry or Eto/Ibrahimovic?
Or Xavi and Inesta?
No chance.
There is a reason Barca didn’t go through with the deal. Perhaps his attitude is part of that reason, because this season he has been no more than an average player. Each game I hope for him to turn it on but I have failed to see it so far. Hopefully the Chelsea game will be the start of good performances.
He is our most expensive player ever so I expect a lot from him. He is lucky with his position because going on his form so far this season if he was our striker we would be expecting more goals and if he was in the midfield we would be furious at his workrate.
Lets face it the reason why we put him in our first line up is based on last seasons performances and the anticipation that he is about to do something magical.
I know he has the talent so Im just waiting for him to wake up because we needs his phenomenal skill to win silverwear this year.
Turn it on for us Arshi!!!!!
not really mate when he plays an average game that performance still is alot because of his quality his presence in the team is a scare to the opponents just look at the tottenham game dont just look at his goals tally look at his performances and assists, against olympiyacos he was our best attacking player with 3 or 4 assists i think, i think he will wake up on sunday dont worry, its funny you aint mentioned anything about the liverpool game last season 1 game 4 goals
Well that game against liverpool was last season. I agree with the man that this season he has had very few good performances, basically only the Olympiacos game comes to mind. How many times has Chris rated him an 8, or even a 7? He has generally got somewhere around a 6. Granted he hasn’t scored less than a 5.5, but his performances so far have been average.
Considering how many goals Arsenal has scored, and how many games he has played (most of them), I think it is fair to expect more goals and more assists from someone who is supposed to be one of our best players.
Like I said we continue to anticipate something great from the guy based on last seasons performances.
Im not saying he is a bad player or that he has been poor this season, just that he has been dissapointing.
its interesting how arshavin can make such statements and does not get stick for it,a player like eboue would been slaughtered.lets not apply double standards on our players.similar case to that of adebayor and fabregas.fabregas said he will one day play for barcelona no one raises a finger, adebayor takes abt milan he gets booed.we dont need an expensive player, end of discussion!
Right on.
A lot of the stuff he says is certainly taken out of context and selectively quoted by journalists to sound a whole lot more stunning, but the fans seem to let it slide like “ahh yeah thats good old Arshi. He wants to play for Barca and thinks they’re better than us and keeps telling our manager what to do, the young lad. Good on him for keeping it real”.
All the while Cesc has to watch his mouth so closely not to let anything like that be put in the public arena. I think if any of our other players made comments like those of Arshavin they would be derided by the fans.
Im not really critisizing Arshavin for speaking his mind (though it is becoming a bit too frequent), but the double standards are annoying.
Yeah , i agree that Arshavin must step up to the plate, he must not talk about buying other midfield players, has he forgotten why he was brought in ??? dum as*s
Well,I really agree with Arshavin.
we really need some experiences in the field.
Look, after v persie injured,we played miserably and cant score against Sunderland.
We have to buy for this season or its over for us.I cant possibly think how we can compete with Chelsea.
What if our key players got injured? If we buy,we could have backup.
THE MAJOR PROBLEM THAT I THINK ARSENAL IS FACING RIGHT NOW IS ALUMINA, HE ALMOST ALLOWED 2 GOALS IN YESTERDAY WHICH COULD HAVE BEEN A PROBLEM FOR ARSENAL, HE LACKS COMPOSURE & CLEARS THE BALL INTO THE CROWD ANYTIME THERE IS A BACK PASS. I THINK IT’S TIME WE START GIVING OUR YOUNG KEEPERS SOME CHANCES & STOP RELYING ON AN OLD MAN WHO DO NOT WANT TO IMPROVE HIS GAME. AND SERIOUSLY WENGER STILL NEEDS AT LEAST 2 MORE PLAYERS(A STRIKER & A DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER).
YELL LOUDER I CAN”T HEAR YOU…
Whats wrong with Song!
Buying expensive players is not always the answer, look at man utd, which expensive player did they buy ? but they keep going on their business winning silently now compare that to Man city what have they achieved so far with their expensively assembled squad—– nothing.Discipline, hardwork, a good coach and players with a never say die atittude is the key. Already Arshavin thinks our team is not good enough, which is the attitude that needs to change
I have to agree with this point. Alot of people are saying we should buy expensive players, but how is UTD winning then?? If they can do it, then so can we. The problem does not lie in what we don’t have, it’s in what we have, and what we have is inconsistency.
Our keeper, don’t even go there – 5 brilliant saves and then he lets in a goal that my granny would have saved! Arshavin, Rosicky, Nasri, Walcott, Diaby, Eduardo, Bendtner, all inconsistent, and there’s no debating that, it’s the truth. UTD have players who are less skilled than ours, but they perform consistently, and that’s what wins trophies. UTD win all their games ugly. We play beautifully one game and win 5-0, then lose the next. Inconsistent….
We bought an expensive player, but all he does is moan. Maybe we do need to buy more players, because we certainly lack the depth when the injuries hit us, but again, if UTD can do it, why can’t we? Do they have a better manager? Are their players more committed? You can decide that. Buying more players (expensive players) is one solution, but it’s not the only solution.
The problem is Arsenal (the thing that makes me wanna pull out my freakin hair sometimes!) is that maybe, just maybe, we focus more on playing beautiful football that on winning ugly.
Remember when Benitez first arrived and won the Champions League with Liverpool? He did it without buying expensive players at that stage, and they certainly didn’t play beautiful football like we do, but guess what, they won the Champions League!
Everyone knows what our problem is, we pass the ball soooooo many times in the box and nobody will take a bloody shot!! Win ugly, who cares, but just win! All my friends who support other teams will even admit that we play the most fluent football, but what good does that do when you don’t win anything??
This argument is getting a bit tired now. We dont win 5-0 and lose the next… we just went 13 unbeaten so thats nonsense… we clearly do shoot because we’ve scored the most goals this season… mate you must be watching reruns of Hansem from 2007??? And if you think that Nani, Anderson, Valencia (combined cost of 50m) are consistent then you are sorely mistaken. Difference is actually that the likes of Giggs, Rooney, Fletcher (godammit), Evra, Vidic, Scholes know what to do when they are carrying passengers in a match… unfortunately Arshavin, Rosicky etc dont or wont. We can never carry passengers United and Chelsea can…our players dont take enough responsibility… vermaelen and gallas do, and van p but thats about it…
spot on south gooner! real madrid had the best players some seasons ago and had nothing to show for it. We’ve come close a couple of times with our youth policy, so arshie needs to step up..well hope to see rosicky fit and play more games because he and fab may help make the difference.
Thats weird, when did Arshavin give this “interview”? After Sunderland game?
He gives interviews to his website. This article looks made up to me…
Our downfall this season will be Arsene’s stubborness, as even his own players are urging him to buy. I bet you if the likes of Fabregas and Van Persie challenge him more and throw down the gauntlet that if he doesn’t strengthen then they walk, he would be more inclined to listen. We cannot afford any more blips and excuses that follow such blips aginst the likes of Sunderland!! If we for some miraculous reasons beat Chelsea on Sunday it will all soon be forgotten however the core problem still remains that we do not have quality in depth.
With Gibbs, Troare, Clichy and Gallas out for the Sunday clash what chance have we against Chelsea even at the Emirates? Let’s not forget what they did to us last season….
Ondgooner,
Wenger does not control injury. It is not his fault half of our team is hurt, he can only now work with what he has. Get a grip but injury is part of the game, even more experience players get hurt. Lay of the man’s back please.
Well, it is nice to see people speak their minds. Experience is not the same thing as Talent. Experience continues where Talents stops i.e. experience thrives where talent cannot, experience is gained over time, but talent is inborn, innate and need time to gain experience to be active. What we need now at Arsenal is Talent that has acquired experience, Arsene know this to well, but chooses talent over experience. The result has shown in past four seasons…no trophy and could remain so until talent acquires experience or Wenger adds experience to his talented sides.
we DO NOT NEED any new players for sure
TOTALLY AGREE GOONER B and Moses Kiplagat.
This guy blows HOT & COLD worse than Walcott, keep your mouth shut and do the bizz on the pitch. All he seems to do is complain these days!
we have talented yet not expensive players???..fabregas is not expensive?? RVP is not expensive??..wht about nasri n rosisky?? n the man himself, arshavin??..we make stars like we are making out of Verminator…
need cover at central defence..if any one of gallas or Ver’ln getsinjured then we are again done or is wenger counting on Nordtveit who is learning his trade at Nurenberg to do the business from next season, also there is Dejorue..but one central defender would be nice.. brade would fit the bill wonderfully..
more than any thing else we need a top class keeper..sooner the better…Almunia to me is not top class..too quite is not commanding and switches off at times..
In response to Debbos, although the need for centre-back cover is apparent (Sylvestre too slow, Djourou injured, Nordtveidt too inexperienced and Senderos apparently being left on the shelf for someone to make a reasonable offer) if we bring in a top-class CB like Brede Hangeland, will he be willing to warm the bench until Gallas or Vermaelen are injured or suspended? I doubt it.
As to Manuel Almunia – yes, I agree 100% – Arsenal deserve and need a world-class goalie, and Manuel is just not good enough.
Bring in Ruud for a swansong at Arsenal. Shouldn’t even be that expensive.
As long as he stayed healthy. heh
(1). The best deal this year was Thomas Vermaelen who was only 10 million, So to say the best players are costly is definitely not true and to spend huge money on a single player is unreasonable. (2). Our best players this season are Cesc Fabregas who came for free and Robin Van Persie who only cost 3 million. (3). Dimitar Berbatov cost Manchester United 30 million, equivalent of what Arsene Wenger paid for Thomas Vermaelen-10m, Andrei Arshavin-16m, Robin van Persie 3m and Alex Song-1m, SO ONLY A STUPID MAN WOULD ASK WENGER TO DO SUCH A DEAL. (4).Arsenal players are not cheap, they are very expensive, its only that Arsenal didn’t pay huge sums to get their players because of Arsene Wenger’s wisdom, but if they sell, they will sell them for huge sums of money. (5). WHAT IS WRONG WITH HOW ARSENAL ARE PLAYING?, 16 wins, 2 draws & 3 losses all with such a beauty and 57 goals. WHAT DO THEY HAVE TO DO?-ANYWAY, YOU CAN ONLY ASK MORE THAN THAT FROM THE BEST and SO, ARSENAL HAVE TO BE THE BEST.
Andrey,
I agree with you but… Please score at least twice against Chelsea!!!
Arshavin is good and smart and I respect his opinion.
any other star more than you? could you just shut up and deal with the business that brought you to the emirates?
Wow
