Arsene Wenger satisfied with Carlos Vela, “I was pleased with his movement off the ball”
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was pleased with Carlos Vela who started for the Gunners on Tuesday against Standard Liege.
The game, which was the first regular start for the Mexican this season, saw the Gunners winning and qualifying for the next stage of the Champions League.
On the youngster, Wenger said:
Carlos needs games and I thought I had an opportunity tonight to give him a game and I believe he did like the team – very well in the first half before dropping a little bit in the second half.
I was pleased with his movement off the ball and his combination play with his partners in the team.

Carlos Vela, will surely prove with goals and good game, to Wenger and Arsenal fans, he is very much worth the time, trust and patience given to him.
vela seems far more potent than Eduardo. The thing that strikes me about Eduardo is how incredibly slow he is. This is not good for a lone striker. I actually think vela will be a superstar!
fatantic player vela more of me
Vela will be the Arshavin of tomorrow for sure..he will be the spearhead of future arsenal..at 20 he has got a large fanbase bigger than walcott …..he will a legend..
Guys at last you are spot on with Vela. The wonder kid is by all standards better than Edwardo. With due respect to Edwardo if he does not show the anger for goals i dont see him displacing any Arsenal forward more so that he is soft and slow. His days are numberd should he get injured because it seems he will not get back to his best. For the first time this season i see Wenger taking action indirectly against players who under perform. For instance Edwardo, Almunia, i expect Diaby and Rosicky to be on the next list soon. This is a sign of competition and we can now dream of a trophy.
I do think Vela is more effective than Eduardo primarily because he is faster and quicker, but he still is inexperienced and is not as effective against a physical defense (which SL was not). Eduardo is a proven scorer while Vela needs to have some more games and goals under his belt to rate as Eduardo has. I do not think Eduardo can play effectively as a single striker and needs to play off of Bentdner or RVP to be more effective, just too small, slow and not physical enough. I don’t think it’s Vela’s best position either.
Vela needs to get stronger and be able to handle contact much better as he is easily knocked off of the ball. He also needs to become more two footed, especially in the goal area. Hard to believe players at this level will not use their less-dominant foot hardly at all.
I think any of the players like Vela, Ramsey, Traore and even Eduardo and Rosicky need to be given some consistent playing time to really get to the level they are capable of. All have shown flashes, but just are not consistent yet this season.
Wenger:are you sure with Vela improvement?

Well I would rather have seen Vela on the ball, and being a striker.I make no apologies that I don’t rate him in front of Eduardo, and then you have Walcott also wanting to play the central striker.the 3 diddy men, is not the solution.I would go as far as to say that we will be in for a striker in january,no time for experiments as RVP is a huge loss in his new adopted striker role, and Bedntner was just coming into his own.
I’ve seen some highlights of the game and Carlos did indeed make some nice runs but the problem was that his team-mates didn’t pass the ball, they just took advantage of the space he created to go for goal themselves.
I agree. He created a lot of space for everyone to take their shots, but no one seems willing to set him up when he put himself in good positions. Besides being greedy, an explanation can be that some of the regulars are not use to playing with him so they haven’t built a good understanding with Vela in terms of knowing when and where Vela likes the ball. But, for me it was more selfishness and players playing with their head down to even noticed him open.
Agreed chris
Vela is a bit too unselfish.
Either way no one can really rate vela yet. As this was his first full game, and he had made 2 very limited appearances before. He needs more time on the pitch.
I think arsenals future should be a 4-3-3
with bendter at central, and vela, and walcott at the sides
Ah that’s 100% true, people expect to see miracles from him in one game, he needs 5, 10, more to be judged, not one.
I stick with what I said about Vela. The likelyhood of both RVP and Bedntner being injured at the same time, and Eduardo only slowly coming back to the form he was just establishing when he got injured, leaves Vela as 4th. choice.
For some reason or another AW is persisting with Vela, even though he has only started him in two League games.he got his chance only because of our injury crisis, yet maybe he is a long term prospect,if he is prepared to wait.
Please don’t misunderstand me, I think he could be an integral part of the team, but if he doesn’t get a run in the side,we will never know.
Vela will be one of the best players to ever wear the gunner shirt!!.. Not claiming to know more than Wenger, but in every video of Vela (youtube) he plays left or right Winger, mostly left.. Im happy hes getting a contract extention, as it would be a HUGE mistake to let this kid go. Eduardo is definitely more experienced but only in minutes played.. as i found that Vela is much more creative, technical and way faster..
What u mean we can’t rate vela u must not be watchin the mexico games vela a beast arsenal needs to give more starts they sleeping on that boy if you aint gonna start him well tranfer him to somewhere that will!!!!
Luda,
Many were not impressed by Carlos on Tuesday where he played 90 minutes and what we are saying it’s that one full game is not enough to understand how good he is and can be.
I have watched all Mexico games lately because of him and yes, he there showed he is a very talented player.
