Depressed Andrey Arshavin, “I just do not want to play football at all”

Submitted by Renzo on November 29, 2009 – 4:00 14 Comments

It is not easy for someone at the age of 28 to fall at the last hurdle in his attempt to qualify for the World Cup Finals, yet Russian midfielder Andrey Arshavin had to witness this when he, together with his National team-mates, went down to Slovenia following the away goals rule.

Yet to hit top form with Arsenal, Arshavin will be 33 when the next World Cup Finals will be underway, reason why he came back depressed from Slovenia.

The midfielder was quoted as saying after returning to London:

I am inconsolable and desolate at what has happened. My family keep telling me that I should forget it as soon as possible, that I should now switch to the club matters and the Champions League but that’s easier said than done.

Nothing revives me so far. When Arsène Wenger asked me what state I was in, I honestly told him that at the moment I just do not want to play football at all.

He talked to me for a long time. He said, too, that I need to switch my attention. But I cannot do it yet.

One man who is trying to help Arshavin is manager Arsene Wenger who opted not to use the Russian from the start against Sunderland.

Speaking of the Russian’s problem, Wenger said:

He is very down. He came back from Slovenia very down and that’s the main reason I did not play him from the start against Sunderland.

You want them to be 100 per cent focused, play a game like it’s life or death. So it is impossible not to be down if you don’t win.

If you care, you are down. Arshavin is captain, he is 28, at the next World Cup he is 33. He is a tough boy. He is mentally okay, but he is down and is still disappointed for his country.

He is a winner, though and strong mentally and when his back is to the wall he responds.

    So sick of his moaning!!

    Hello!

Although I frequent this website, this is my first post, so hello!

I loved Arshavin when he first came, and well.. who can forget that fateful 4 goal night at Liverpool… but seriously I wish he would stop his moaning! Arshavin is super duper when he’s on form.. and I don’t know what to believe. I just hope the media are highly exaggerating and misquoting him because all these recent moany press releases aren’t showing him off in a good light, compared to the lovely Cesc who is always as loyal as ever.

Come on Arshavin, do it for the team!

  • Chris says:

I wouldn’t be too harsh on him, losing a World Cup place like that is painful.

  • Ugo says:

Arshavin is A Big Game Player.Today’s match will decided by the experience of Rosicsky,Arshavin and the industry of Song and Fabregas.I see the scoreline ending 3-1 in favour of the Gunners.

well looking at big countries that miss out on big tournaments remember England, 2008 Euro??? how they got knocked out….. was Lampard or Rooney or Terry so depressed that they said they didint wont to play??? they wanted to quit??? England was and is a much bigger football country then Russia and yet those players managed to put aside their depression an still played well for their club…..
ever since he came Arshavins been complaining bout this and that, I just feel that he doesn’t want to play for Arsenal anymore…..
before he ruins the atmosphere of the team we should let him go

    • M. Reyes says:

guess the english players dont really care as much as russian players to make the world cup ay?

give the guy a break, its a big loss for him and his country-men he’ll come around!

      • s says:

“Give the guy a break”??. Arsharvin earns what? your yearly income in a day? tese guys are paid to NOT HAVE BREAKDOWNS. Thats why we pay them. We pay them to win for US! So what if Russia didnt make the WC, who cares? If he wants to mourne it fine, but do not let it affect your arsenal game. What other high payed players does that? No one because its highly unprofessional. He is about to turn into Berbatov, highly gifted and brilliant, “when he is in the mood.” Get a grip Arsharvin. We pay you to give us trophies not to give russia trophies, get your prioritise right! PL does not have breaks or time for mentally ill players, if you cannot cope then maybe you are in the wrong league. Todays match against Chelsea will show us all what Arhsarvin is all about….

        • Inspirator says:

That’s just ridiculous. Stating ”these guys are paid to not have breakdowns”, suggests you should be mentally invincible if 1. one is a footballer in the PL; 2. one gets paid a hefty sum. Neither is there only club-related football, nor is there only country-related football. It’s part of a footballer’s life – and if my country, as an up-and-coming football nation, would fail to succeed, I would be heavily disappointed as well. So I suggest YOU should stop the moaning, and, indeed: give the guy a break.

          • s says:

Yes indeed that is what i mean, if you play footy on the highest level you are paid to preform. It is not like his mum died or anything. He lost a football match and is not going to WC. He is not the only one not going and Russia is(belive it or not) not the only rising footy nation not going.
They are PAID not to break down over a football result yes. Of course other things in life can infuence but Wenger has himself stated that one of the main importance for players at arsenal is to be mentally though enough to compete on this level. If you do not manage to play games after your country is out of WC then maybe that is an indication that you are not tough enough? Look at Beckham, how many times has life not punched him in the face? People even threatened his family after his red card vs argentina. Yet he always raises and he always fights back! Wanting to do better, wanting to make something out of the situation. I do expect arsharvin to do the same. I mean he is better than becks is he not? Beckham always had an influence in the teams he played, arhsarvin should to. He is a leader among men, yet he does not seem to cope with a loss and he doesnt do the job for us(remember he was bought to be one of the pillars for our young team, bought to be an example of a good sportsman for others to follow). I really hope no one follows as it is today. Unless he suddenly turns around and shines…
