[Vote] What was the REAL reason why we were hammered by Chelsea?

Submitted by Steve on November 30, 2009 – 4:00 69 Comments

Losing was on my cards. Losing by a three-goal margin, no.

Arsenal’s first home defeat of the season couldn’t have been any worse, yet it’s not easy to understand what really went wrong out there. The possible reasons, in my opinion, are:

1. Missing key players
No way we could win with Robin van Persie, Nicklas Bendtner and Gael Clichy out injured.

2. The referee
Andrey Arshavin’s goal should have stood, Carlos Vela should have been given a penalty and Chelsea players were allowed to foul without getting any yellows.

3. Wenger
He picked the wrong formation and made the wrong substitutions.

4. We were unlucky
What are the odds that we concede two goals where the ball ends in exactly the same position, top right corner?

5. Chelsea are better
Even with all players fit, we would have still lost the game as Carlo Ancelotti’s side have more depth and better players.

well my friends, i am sure for one thing after watching this game v cheski, arsenal will not win anything with these players that i will put here. these players ared: denilson, vela, traore, eduardo. these players are players that should not play in the firts 11.denilson i would have not include even in the reserves team, he is not for arsenal belive me.vela is very talented player but talented players does not win u the tittle or any cup. u have to see barcelona if u want to understand that. barcelona does not win the CL or spanish league with boan kerkic boscuets or these kind of talented players, thwy win trophis with players like messi eto xavi iniesta yaya pyjoll and these players are not talented players they are great players and matured. even walcott has to to a lot more in his game or if he dont then i am sure he is not a better player than lennon and he will not give something special in our team something that all of us are looking for. traore is a good player but a good player only to play for a club such as sanderland stoke portsmuth spuds everton not for us for sure. so definitely wenger has to know that this team will not win anything if he continues to put these players in the first team.

clearly we shud play 442 i dont see how nobody realises this?we played 2 experiment formations that clearly have failed. 451 ,433.he ruined last season with 451 ,i just hope he changes the 433 before he ruins this season too . im sick of watching these formation fail so miserably. but also i think if any one can do it in those bad formations arsenal can

Quite simply we were not in the game…….
I think its very easy to say we need to buy and clearly we do. I like our team and our players but watching the game yesterday really hurt. After going 1 down I still thought we could get into them a bit, but eduardo did not look sharp at all, even when through he made the wrong decisions and i dont believe he will lead the line. I do think someone with pedigree is needed up front. Bendy boy will and I believe can lead the line, I think he is the other end of the spectrum of adebayor. Ade with skill but no heart. Bendy. all the heart but not anywhere near as skillful.
I remember a clear indication of intent from certain players during the match, the ball went out for a throw in and Traore just stood there waiting for a ball boy to fetch it, Fabregas ran 25 yards and ran off the pitch to chase it and threw it himself so commitment is required on some part by some of them.
Physically we are lacking in height, build and heart.
Honestly I believe we cannot challenge for the title until we have 2 or three players. Everyone says we need a top class Goalie, I dont really think so, If we have a tighter defence and a good defensive midfielder then that should mask Almunia’s deficiency.
Plenty of hype surrounding Blaise Matuidi and he is one for the future, but we need someone now……and someone who has won something so I would prefer Lyon’s Toulouan or to have Patrick Vieira back. You cant beat a winners mentality.
Up front people reckon that Dzezko or Chamack. I think we should go all balls out and be incredibly rude and make an offer for Torres. I know its impossible, but a big wad of money waved at liverpool plus either Eduardo or Walcott…
dont shoot me over Walcott, but i dont think he has developed as planned and is too lightweight. there is no chance he is going to get 20-30 league goals a season and that is what we need.
The team is very very creative and people have said that we can create goals for fun, but we need a big all aggresive centre forward to piss off a centreback partership and Torres is one possibility. If there is a huge wad of cash sitting in the bank then I would have him. (dreaming)
I like the fact we can find plenty of kids and realise that they are good for the future but we need something NOW.
P.S. after Denilsons abismal showing why was Aaron Ramsey not playing instead on form at the moment and in my opinion a far better player?

Even with a full squad and top form, we won’t be able to match the big teams.
This team is just not strong enough..

4 years depending on youngsters = 4 years without a trophy,, as simple as that

btw: I think Fabregas deserves a better team, we should let him go next summer..

  • Gary says:

Most of the blind comments above suggest we were not in the game,1st Eduardo is seriously out of form he should have 10 goals already, this season he seems to lack that clinical finish we have been use too,2nd we were the better team for the 1st half(we were undone by an-ex great full-back and poor goalkeeping),lets not kid ourselves Chelski are a great team with top class players but they were the team defending most of the 1st half, committing lots of fouls to break up our play, they are so good at defending, they have complete trust in their Goalie and that is why they soak up so much pressure and when they break they have pace and craft in Cole who was allowed the freedom to get forward, as he did not fear any pace to attack him until walcott was introduced, they also had the pace & guile of Anelka too pull us around & the probably the best striker in the world right now Drogba to finish everything off,he is on fire this season.I hate to see our team lose but we were missing our wonderful RVP who was also looking the real deal this season,Bendtner and Clichy so lets not beat up our team too much we will be back & challenging for honours just keep th faith and please AW get us a world class GOALIE ………..

  • dada says:

kushagra, you took the words right out of my mouth…I dont believe chelsea had better players , well except for drogba. I just think they had more belief and purpose! we have a perfect mid field but our defense and attack seems to be disconnected, did you see how the chelsea defense was organised? superb! now I see why almunia should leave cos his positioning is bad and gosh, he makes decisions like a PC with a PII processor! WENGER should go for CARLTON COLE and YAYA TOURE, I dont think chamakh will be any good for now considering he has already played for bordeaux, we need someone who can score goals or we’ll be whooped silly in the champions league. Carlon Cole pleas, even if its 15million pounds.

  • simplyTheBest says:

we did miss RVP but not clichy as we werent troubled from the left.i dont think we missed bendtner at all as you miss some one who has done something to be missed he cant win us a game against a relegated team like west brom what he could’ve done against chelsea. yes we did miss diaby and his physical presence in the middle almost everybody’s fav team played and we lost not just once but twice which shows how bad our judgement and assumptions are. best of luck for the rest of the season.

  • fowler says:

    what we need:

a top class kepper e.g akinfeev, ochoa, lloris or even just rob green.

another top class big centre back e.g. fazio, sakho, zapata, subotic

someone in the middle to help song e.g. L.diarra ,matuidi ,veloso, vieira,

    carlton cole!!!!!

all of these could be done by spending only in the region of 40 million pounds

    • Nando says:

Ochoa would be a perfect for Arsenal, but I feel Wenger would rather give one of the youngsters in the team a chance to come in for Almunia.

Cole would be good upfront but I don’t think West Ham will let him go considering that they are fighting relegation. A good target man would be Luca Toni and I think he’s available since he’s had a falling out in Bayern. They could try to sign him on loan till the end of the season and then Arsenal won’t jump into a rushed long term decision.

  • wags says:

Just thot id mention that on the vote for the score for the Chelsea game, i said it would be 0-3 and guess what I was right did any1 else get it right out there.
We wont get any1 in January, wenger hates the jan window unless something exceptional is there to be got, and I dont see any1 coming in at this time, tho we need 3, im not being greedy, but thats what it wil take to turn this into a half decent season, rather than a decline to the abyss of the 3rd tier of the premier league.

Maradona was a shorty….BUT… He was as fast as a bullet and strong… and above all he had BRAINS.

I do agree that tall/big players have advantages…. but they also have disadvantages. Same applies for small forwards.

Our strikers are too small yes…. too small for one thing though….

    The way we play!!

    Cross… cross… cross…. cross….. cross……

I can see a fed up look in Sagna’s eyes (especially when he has a good day crossing)… it is impotent.. and BORING.

You can’t do the same thing over and over and expect different results.

Keep the ball on the ground… do what you do best…. quick slick passing….

And for the love of GOD…. more shots from outside.. Fabs can shoot… Rosy can shoot…. Denilson can shoot,,, Nasri can Shoot… Arshavin can shoot…..

How many set plays do we have for shooting from outside?

Besides…. I STILL think Arshavin should play in the front…. Arshavin is the kind of player that does a lot even on his BAD DAYS. He really is a silent and intelligent player. his stealth is incredible and his finish killer…. and even out of form has the intelligence to offset any defense creating more space for his mates… in this case VELA and Walcott…. both players that need the space to play at the pace they are comfortable. I think even Dudu could benefit from Arshavin’s extra support up front. Arshavin shouldn’t play behind the strikers. that should be reserved for Nasri, Fabregas, Rosicky, and Song (and/or Ramsey).

Another idea I’ve been having is why doesn’t Wenger play Abou Diaby up front since the fella likes to score?? It might even just work..

As much as i do agree the squad needs a couple of additions, I don’t think the current problem lack of talent…. I feel it is more a matter of inability to adapt with the spins and turns of the EPL. Injuries of key players are not dealt with properly. Using the same trick over and over isn’t going to cut the cheese.
