Arsenal’s 18-man squad for Olympiakos Champions League game announced

Submitted by Jeffrey on December 8, 2009 – 17:35 22 Comments

Below is the squad which will make the trip for tomorrow’s Champions League game against Olympiakos. Speaking of the below squad, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger declared:

I left a few players behind but basically I am very happy that we do not have to absolutely win this game because all the players I left have little knocks and needed in fairness a rest.

So I travel with a very young team and fortunately we have some players who were suspended like Alex Song, or are coming back from injury like Theo Walcott, who will play.

So we should have a good mixture between young players and experienced players.

Lukasz Fabianski
Vito Mannone
Carlos Vela
Theo Walcott
Aaron Ramsey
Alex Song
Mikael Silvestre
Jack Wilshere
Fran Merida
Kyle Bartley
Francis Coquelin
Thomas Cruise
Craig Eastmond
Jay Emmanuel-Thomas
Kerrea Gilbert
Luke Ayling
Mark Randall
Gilles Sunu

Damn….Senderos still gets the shaft. He is so gone in January!

  • BillikenGooner says:

Has Silverstre applied for a Youth Coach position?

    Seriously… heh

  • Fizzy says:

Whats up with senderos? Does Wenger still have plans for him in any squad anytime soon? Is the sky still blue @ Chelsea? Nice to see Walcott and Alex Song Back though. Hope they do well anyway in Greece.

  • NewGooner says:

We are so going to get smashed up tomorrow, what a shame.

What will these players learn? Not much I think. Find out why we have so many injuries and please use more big guns, because these are lambs to the slaughter again.

    • Gioo says:

Why would we need to field a stronger team? We’ve already qualified for the next round and this would be a good chance for the youth to get a run out. And to answer your question as to why we always get injured- well maybe it’s to do with unnecessarily playing first team players in games that don’t matter!

  • Gunner12 says:

I think is good Wegner uses this guys, ’cause imagine that Fab plays tomorrow and he gets injured, that will be a goodbye to Liverpool match on sunday, which is a mucho more important match than this one against Olympiakos because we are in the next round even we lose 10-0 (of course that won’t happen.

And I don’t think Vela is the best option in the Central Striker role, I think Theo would do better….. I’ll put:
    ——Wilshere—–Theo—–Vela——-

Olympiakos has injuries too..I live in greece and i know this team very well..They lose a lot of matches in europe every year, but Arsenal must be careful about Mitroglou their striker. He is in great form and scored two goals in the greek “el clasico” against Panathinaikos..

Don’t really see dis team gettn anyfing from da game as far as a result but as far experience is concerned u just can’t tell whether a defeat will be valuable or not seein as our first team av been getting beat year in year out and still avnt really learnt much….so who knws??

I read everywhere that Pavlyuchenco’s agent confirmed the interest from Arsenal..The truth is that he is a great player and the most important he collaborates perfectly with his team mate from their national team,Andrey Arshavin..

  • summer breez says:

I personally think its a really good idea its a great chance for the young ones to shine
Any one watched the Manchester game tonight they couldn’t play they defended and won it reminded me that conserving energy and knowing where your team mate is for that golden chance every chance is a golden chance one got to make them count they got three chances and scored
Our young ones got the golden chance they got to shine and take it on we got to give our young the chance to shine some will fall and some will graduate the best scenario to teach swim or sink
I personally looking forward for a beautiful game away you go Arsenal

  • Cameron says:

It will be nice to watch the youngsters play. So much better then seeing the first team have to grind out a result worrying about fatigue and injury for 90 minutes.

Good chance to rest for Liverpool. Anfield won’t be a happy place since we will be playing then a few days after they host thier final champions league game until at best next year. Let a lone hosting the team that knocked them out maybe the phsycological affect will kick in after that game.

  • Herbert says:

I just hope that he is not going to play Song… We don’t want him to get injured before the important Liverpool game (now we know that Torres and Gerard are back)… Tomorrow’s match is totally meaningless except for some youth experience (we are top of the group and we will stay top whatever happens)…

  • kai says:

i think wenger is right to play the kids in a no win no loss game….picture what happened at chelsea yesterday….engine room essien out for 1 month or 2……sure man u and gooners world wide wud be happy ……and with current injuries to the squad….it wud just be our bad luck that fabregas or asharvin gets injured….so i say …stay home….and lets see what the young guns can do.
