Arsene Wenger reveals Andrey Arshavin didn’t use his right foot in training this week

Submitted by Renzo on December 14, 2009 – 4:00 18 Comments

By watching yesterday’s goal you would never say such a thing but according to Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, Russian striker Andrey Arshavin did not use his right foot – the one with which he found the net – for a whole week, because of an injury.

Speaking after the Gunners win over Liverpool at Anfield, Wenger said:

He surprises the goalkeepers and defenders every time. His foot was injured and he couldn’t hit the ball properly on his right foot and didn’t practice the whole week nearly. But when he had the chance he still took it. Later I had to take him off because of that. At that moment [of the goal] he didn’t feel the pain.

On Saturday’s results, which saw Chelsea, the two Manchester clubs and Spurs dropping points, Wenger added;

I always said that Chelsea would drop points after our game and I believe they have and they will. Everybody will drop points because there are so many good teams in this league. Now Liverpool have Gerrard back, Torres back, Aquilani back, I tell you many will drop points here. They played at a level in the first half that was impressive.

Arshavin is great. His goals are always superb, and liverpool is a customer to him.

  • Max says:

This reminds me of the Blackburn game earlier this year when he played with 4 stitches

  • Vickie says:

It it were Vito or Fabianski, we would have attributed that goal to either’s inexperience, but how could Alum have punched that ball in that manner? I think alum has cost us so much and he should be our third choice keeper. Holla to all the snippers.

After seeing almunia’s performances, im really serious now about arsenal buying Lloris. Denilson was also terrible,we can get khedira to play cdm. Big thanks to glen johnson and ashavin, we need a big striker hope wenger isnt fooled into not buying by this match, maybe a lukas podolski, iv been screaming his name forever, he’s playing in a small team, he’s not cup tied, and he’s a proven goal scoring striker playing internationally. We also need a defender.

    • Gary says:

Forget Lloris we should give Fabianski a run ,Denilson was one of our better players in the 2nd half, you cant count the 1st half the entire side was poor,Denilson does so much covering for other players what you need to do is watch his movement he plays the easy ball and lets the others play,i suggest you watch the game again and then make a comment.People say we need to buy DM,CB,CF,how many times have we been outplayed this season, considering we have RVP,GC,NB,TW,KG,TR all injured,we see our players perform maybe 3hrs a week AW sees them 24/7 who is more qualified what we need?….Keep the faith….

I don’t think any of our keepers are ultimately what we need. Fabianski is really not any different from Alumnia in my opinion, he too makes bad plays and is not nearly as quick as Alumnia is. He did a horrible job on the 1 v 1 in the CL game on Weds to give up that goal by being slow to come out and slow to go down (though did improve on his next chance). Last year when the stakes were high against Liverpool at Anfield and in the FA Cup semi he was really horrible. Not defending Alumnia because he has been very poor this season on dealing with things in the air, but is a pretty good shot stopper and also good with distribution. However, he has really cost us in games with his inability to handle free kicks and crosses into the box. That’s a double whammy as we are not very good in the air as a team. Look how Chelsea has now lost points in two games vs Villa and Everton by conceding five goals on set pieces. They have a team that is pretty good in the air and a much better keeper (though he too has had trouble this season).

what? fabianski was fabulous against olympiakos last week, man. and he hasnt got enough chances you cannot just judge someone from the two games you saw.and almunia’s distribution was crap…..didnt you see last night how crappy it was? never really got to our players, kept goin outta bounce. even mannone’s blunder with the freekick, in which he punched the ball into the play again instead, was even better than almunia, considering he’s so much younger and the ball came at a much faster pace

almunia is just killing me.just like diaby.

  • FCUK THIS! says:

wenger needs to strenghten nevertheless – the game showed Arsenal’s intent & they can win the EPL {all we needed is a serial goalscorer & a ddefensive-minded Mid}. good to be a gunner today!!

    • Fresh says:

Striker sure…….SONG is a beast! Beat player on the park easily. He is also become our most consistent player.
A striker like Dzeko is a MUST, but i prioritise a Central Defender and Keeper far ahead of Defensive Mid. Denilson (as average as he is) can be adequate cover.

What to you think about Gignac?

  • oz_gooner says:

Almunia just isnt a 1st choice keeper.. denilson cant string together 2 good games.. but he is there simply because we have no better player for that role.. he has had so much first team experience and its not paying off .. get rid off him Arsene !!

  • Almost Ak says:

Thank god 4 arsha with is talented superb shot.liverpool is arshavin wife

  • dw says:

i think song is strong but his to slow and laid back he takes to long to pass the ball and he tries to shield the ball before he plays it and gives away to much free kick, and hes allways running back on to the play ,where he should be running towards it the make a challenge , he need to set just in front the back four and we be find no one cant see that or is it just me watch are next game you we see what i mean.

Srry ot of topic but i found this video hilarious

  • fam says:

CF? how about adriano? ? ?

    • 8 inch knob says:

NO! The last thing we need is a fat, past it, alcoholic. I would much rather have Henry back.

      Now there’s a thought.

He’s won everything there is in Spain and is still lethal in a lone striker position. In my view, he is the perfect player to come in in January and compliment our attacking line up.

  • lee says:

jesus christ! y r people saying oooh we need a CF, arshavins record as a CF for arsenal is 2 games – 2 goals, I dont know about anyone else but i would say thats pretty damn good plus RVP will be back next season unless arshavin keeps scoring in which case RVP will be deployed on the LW. on the othe hand I do agree with the keeper comments although im a bit annoyed that everyone has overlooked schneszsny, he is by far our best keeper and is coming back from loan soon. he has better reflexes than mannone, taller than almunia(better at catching long balls), more consistent than fabianski and can command his penalty box much better than any of them. the only thing he lacks is experience.
