Hasmat’s United Analysis: Worrying times for Arsenal
Written by Hasmat on February 2, 2010 19:00
Now this is going to be a quick and short analysis as I was too frustrated during and after the game to write a proper analysis. Every year, Arsenal fumble at the most important games. I stated a few weeks back that 14 days will determine our season and so far it is looking like the same old story.
We lost to Stoke and crashed out of the cup, then went to Villa and luckily came back with a point and finally, Manchester United came to the Emirates and gave us another battering, which is unacceptable. No more excuses, most of the players have been playing together for like 3 years and still they are too many weaknesses.
No Leadership in Defence
The left back area was deep in trouble, mainly because Nani was brilliant, but also because Clichy had the worst game in an Arsenal shirt. Yes it is good that our centre backs go up front but we must use a bit of common sense. Against Everton, Pienaar scored when he ran through unmarked. United’s second goal was a simple counter attack and Rooney ran through unmarked to slot his 100th goal.
William Gallas saved Arsenal blushes by making a few crucial tackles but overall, everyone at the back was poor. Almunia tried to do his best but failed again as Nani’s first should have been dealt with.
Any defenders know that when a player is running towards goal, you tackle him; something Clichy clearly forgot when Park scored. There is definitely two out of the three goals that could and should have been avoided.
Midfield
Song was back and probably the best player for Arsenal but no one else really turned up for the Gunners. Denilson was slacking and could lose his place to Diaby. Fabregas tried his best to get the home side going, but again lack of communication and over elaboration saw Arsenal miss numerous chances.
Attack
Now everyone seems to praise Arshavin week in week out but the Russian is not performing. I disagree with Wenger when he said that great players will do something special in a moment. Not at all. Tevez is a great player and he works his socks off for Man City from start to finish!
Arshavin was the best attacking force but I felt, in the first half, he should have squared it rather than shoot. His decision making was not right but I want the Russian to turn up and play every week, not just against the big teams. If you are being paid ridiculous amount of money to do the best job in the world, then I always expect you to perform.
Also, tactics was wrong! I felt Bendtner should have started to give powerful presence up front and push Arshavin to the wings, where he is most effective.
Star Man Award
Nani was amazing. I don’t understand the reason for some people giving him a lower match rating than Rooney. He was by far the best player, scored once and set up two goals. What more does he need to do?
Future
The players need to come out and beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. That is a huge task. Maybe the title will be out of reach once again but we have no one to blame but ourselves.
I am seriously worried about the future of the boss and Cesc Fabregas. At the start of the season, Wenger said that if we did not win anything then his plan would have failed. A few weeks ago, he refused to sign a contract and I know that last season he was tempted to sign for Madrid.
My gut feelings tells me that Wenger is waiting to see if this current team can go far and match his ambition. If they cannot win something, then I think he might walk. Fabregas may well leave if Barca come for him. I do not think he will be rejecting them again, especially if Wenger is considering his own future.
I understand that my view may cause uproar between fans but if you look at the signs from the manager in the last few weeks; they all raise questions. And his last analysis of the performance against United just shows that even he was baffled by the team.
Let’s just say I hope I’m wrong with this one!
