[Vote] Transfer window over, no new signings made by Wenger. You Agree?

Submitted by Steve on February 2, 2010 – 4:30 48 Comments

This is what Arsene Wenger said not long ago ahead of the January transfer market.

Sometimes you think that is a bargain you cannot turn down and don’t forget Arshavin got us in the Champions League last season. Of course I would prefer the player who can play in both competitions and so it would mean the player has the quality to play in the long-term for Arsenal Football Club. But we have an interested eye on the transfer window and if the right player turns up then we will do it.

It ended yesterday and no signings were made. I personally feel a little gutted as I believe a goalkeeper and a versatile left/right back were required.

What are your thoughts?

Vote above and do leave a comment to explain your decision. And if you want to be funny and ask why I didn’t add “No, we needed a new manager” amongst the options, that’s because it’s foolish to ask for Wenger’s head.

KEEPER! Urgently!!!!!!!!! How wants a striker when Vermi socres goals! And we are the team with more goals (last time I saw an statistic)

    • ashish says:

go to hell with you statistics or write them down on poece of paper and stick them up wengers ass.Statistics dont win league.where were your statistic when we couldnt score score against chelsea and manu and that too at hm.scoring against pathetic opponents has increased our tally of goals this year.

      • GUN says:

I AGREE – ITS CLEAR THAT WENGER HAS LOST THE PLOT…WE ARE UNDER-ACHEIVERS {VALENCIA OF THE EPL}. ALL THOSE WHO DISAGREE ARE AFRAID OF WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN AFTER WENGER, THIS ISN’T HIS CLUB {HE’S USING IT AS A EXPERIMENT- WHICH IS PROVING TO BE HIS DEMISE}. WHERE ARE OUR SEASONED INTERNATIONALS , WHICH ALL TOP TEAMS NEED TO WIN SILVERWARE. UCL IS HIS LAST OPPURTUNITY TO PROVE GUN FANS WRONG

        • leicester goner says:

i totally agree we need more experiance in the squad

        • Joe 71 says:

You must be joking to think we can win UCL. Football is now so so competitive with teams like Chelsea, Manu Barcelona, Real (and now ManC) spending heavily to win trophies. Arsenal have not gone that way therefore it shows in our performances: lack of experience, lack of quality etc. Arsenal cant compete with that.

  • Jack Staniforth says:

The widow is closed there was no one avialble or worth spending money on so let`s get on with it and change the subject. What will the media do now? Oh! yes, we have the Terry affair to tintalate our palates. Typewriters at the ready……Go. ( poor bastard)

    • Debbos says:

no player available?? what makes you feel so..ahh lord wenger must have made his usual excuse!! he has no balls to hunt down players..he is always sniffing for his bargain buy!! thats called an economist turned football manager!

      • Nesta says:

We nid quality strikes of è caliber of Villa why cant we sell è lyks of Diaby,Vela,Eduardo, Ramsey nd ol dose young stars 2 raise money 4 Villa or Llorente. We nid people hu can produce è magic lyk Rooney, Gerrad, Messi nt ppl lyk Vela nd company oh nd Arshavin i think he z Mr Liverpool against dat them he z è best. I rest my case

        • Hunter says:

Why would we want to sell Diaby or Ramsey or Vela? Diaby has been brilliant this season and the other two and very good young players. We need to sell the garbage that isn’t fit to wear the shirt. I’m talking about Denilson, Almunia, Sylvestre. If we had replaced these 3 would be clear at the top of the prem right now. Even without a striker!

          • Nesta says:

Pls don talk don talk bout Alumina i cnt belive dat he z making è 1st team which mins he z better dan è others, it means we hav no goalkeepers at ol. S 4 Slyvester he z at arsenal coz he z frm France dats ol. luk at è french players we hv at è tim n è previous french players we had.

      • Joe 71 says:

Yes U are right. Wenger has managed to deceive some poor fools like Jack. Old man Campbell is the bargain buy of the year.

  • Bretty says:

Because Sol Campbell wasn’t signed at all. No siree bob.
He just sort of formed from socks left in the washing basket…

I’m getting fed up of reading countless blog posts saying “no new signings” when Sol was one and one that looks like a good piece of short term business.

Don’t get me wrong, it would have been nice to sign a striker but could we have really enlisted the services of anyone better than what we have?

Chamakh hasn’t been in great form this season, Huntelaar definitely hasn’t… sure there may have been a few options but anybody worth anywhere near £10 mil+ that Wenger thinks would add a dimension to the team?

Probably not. It’s all well and good us declaring “hey, that player is good, we should get him” but Wenger has a network of scouts tracking these players carefully.

I believe we signed where we needed the most with a solid defensive backup.

  • John Muhindo says:

Injuries is the problem, not signing because team has potiential to win.

  • gooner68 says:

id never want wenger to go but he seriously needs to get his head out his arse, why the hell he keeps almunia in goal and denilson playing i have no idea, more often then not we are losing games or giving away goals because of them two, the defence has no confidence in almunia and as for denilson the guys a joke no positional sence no strenth, rooney just flew past him on his way to scoring that goal and all denilson does is look over his shoulder and watch him go.

wenger should have got atleast two players in, it would have been hard to just replace almunia theres not an easy fix for that but he should have gotten in a striker in my view the hunter would have been the perfect choice hes a prolific scorer all round, you get the ball to him in that penalty area and he will score, yea ok so he hasnt been played much this season but hey dont that remind you of 2 previous arsenal legends “bergkamp and henry”
we have no prolific scorer in the team and thats one of our main problems the midfield are having to push right up the field to attack and thats leaving us wide open, you can get away with that with the lesser teams but the big teams will rip us apart

    just my 10 pence worth

  • gunningooner says:

    Jan Mucha/ Igor Akinfeev pls

  • pete says:

The lads are trying hard, but they, like Arshavin know a hopeless cause. Yes we can beat most teams, but against determined top opposition we are lost. How long will this continue, how much can this team improve from here, I didn’t see any improvement Sunday, and not much this season. Miracles welcome though.

  • kevin says:

    I agree he’s insane.

  • aj says:

If he can’t get any further this season, I think he’ll stand down at the end of the season. He’s put everything into this team and when he realises that they can’t win anything he’ll walk.Perhaps he’s leaving some money in the bank for the next man in.

  • Debasish says:

Next time please buy 1. Akinfeev 2. Dzeko 3. Subotic 4. Shako 5. Hazard 6. Rb get rid of almunia, fabianski, silvestre, denilson- cannot defend, rosicky, dudu- cannot score and may be sagna as his attack is awaful.

  • Abbas says:

A network of scout indeed that bought us Denilson BUT failed to buy drogba,C ronaldo,W rooney,Jenas,Huddlestone,Torres,Van der Saar …etc. Wake up Mr Wenger, you can never win trophies win some of this jerks in ur first Team… Thanks

  • Em n Em says:

We need a short term solution for goal keeper {considering Mannone n Sczenzny} n striker bt a long term solution for midfielder n defender.

  • mckenzie says:

There were no quality players available on the market. Wenger tried David Villa and Chamakh but could not get them. Do you want him to spend on useless players

  • gooner68 says:

david villa oh come on do me a favour wenger wouldnt even consider villa way too pricey wages too high, no the only reason he put villa’s name in the hat was to make us think he is interested in buying him,
typical wenger again just bullshit coming out his mouth

  • sohaib says:

guys I know that Wengar is not doing good for arsenal…..he does’nt have quality except cesc….But I must say that it is time to support ur club…Look at Liverpool there fans are still backing their club and benitez…So it is time support arsenal caz we can still win by defeating Chelsea….Hope 4 the best

  • The_gunner_4ever says:

some of you guys so called FANz are pathetic.. when we lost the chelsea game you fckers were saying we got no chance but we dint lose any games since thn till now. And i still believe we can do it.. if not this year thn next year.. and we have improved.. we are winning all the easy gams.. this is what we dint do other seasons and you fckers used to say we cant win easy games but we can win against Man U and whats the point.. make your fcken mind.. you can always go and support chelsea, manU or city since they can buy any player they want.. ( when you plant a fruit tree you have to wait for it to grow and then you will get fruits out of it, not straight away) we got a team, which AW build it, and one season this will pay of.. wont be suprise if its this season and you fckers have to eat your words..

By the way im not swearing at all of youz, just the antifanz..

    In arsene I trust…!!!!!

  • Juma says:

Am beginning to believe what i isaaciru wrote on a blog sometime last year” if arsen is not sacked arsenal will remain an average squad no trophies an the board keeps praising him at the expense of the funs, lets agree wanger is not good enough its the real truth, year in year out wenger in charge we will not get anthing”its the truth actually its two years nothing an u will attack me but its the truth, pliz ask Mr. wager if he has anything like a trophy show i wish he new the pain of being beaten by MAN U 4 times, that’s not normal

    • Joe 71 says:

I do not believe any other Arsenal manager has lost to ManU 4 times in a row. Something is desperately wrong, and just because we say so we are told by other supporters who are good at being deceived to go and support another club.

  • old timer says:

the trouble is that we make the same mistakes over and over again. I could not believe that when the 2nd half started Arsene had made no changes,as for the past two months we had been crying out for a 6ft striker and where is Nick Bentdner?-sitting on the bench as we are getting a football lesson. Please teach someone to shoot from outside the penalty area.

    • Joe 71 says:

Rosicky, Nasri, Fab and Arsh can shoot from outside the penalty box and we should all know that. But the problem is SAF’ defensive tactics was to close our players down very quickly, yet we were useless at doing that to them. Is this what beautiful football is about ? I’ll tell you, there is no beauty in being spanked, by what was not really a very strong team. Very very poor tactics. And the man responsible blames it on his own players – what a joke Wengerholics.

  • bolanle says:

I think we need a striker becos the manager cant continue to rely on those player resuming from injury cos theres no 100% assurance that they’ll give u what u want. Transfer is closed now and we av to keep faith on those we have.

  • Hypern0vae says:

For crying out loud… let’s look at your quote from Arsene again “if the right player turns up then we will do it”. Clearly the right player didn’t turn up – get over it already. Unless you actually work at the club you have no idea what’s going on behind the scene’s – for all we know Arsene could have made offers for a whole number of players… perhaps they didn’t want to come, perhaps their parent club didn’t want to sell – either way, this whole ‘blame Wenger’ philosophy just stinks of boo-boy fans who don’t know how lucky they are.

    • Hunter says:

Or perhaps he wanted to low ball them and they just said no. We know he pinches every penny so who’s to say he made proper offers for players? It’s costing us a lot more in the long run by missing out on winning the Premier League and the Champions league than it would be to spend on a couple of players. Right now we run the risk of losing Cesc and RVP because we lack ambition. The cost of losing those two is far greater than a few million bolstering the squad now.

  • keith says:

The sooner silent stan takes over this club the better the currant board are living in the dark ages along with wenger.
This club has been going backwards since the invincibles the club should have pushed on from that but have not and been in decline Wenger has failed to replace in every area and making do we have been lucky to finsih 4th the last few years
Every team is getting stronger now even Wigan spent 5 million on Moses Man city and Spurs keep improving there squads Aston Villa and Birmingham are getting stronger
We need a fresh we are not good enough to win anything this year as soon as we get knocked out of the champoins league wenger should go along with Pat Rice and bring in someone who can take this club forward

  • keith says:

We are only a few players short of an invincible team again
    1.Goalkeeper
    2.Quality cover in defence
    3.Holding midfielder
    4.striker 30 a season strong player

60 MILLION OR SO AWAY WHICH COULD BE RAISED THROUGH SALES OF ALMUNIA,ED,EBOUE,DENILSON PLUS THE MONEY FROM SELLING PLAYERS IN PRESVIOUS SEASONS

    • Davi says:

I think we’re only a season or two away from an invincible team will few or no signings.
Song is getting so good he could be at an essien-level soon, fabregas continues to improve and will hit 20 goals in the next few years, and diaby can be one of the top midfielders in the league
Id back edu to find his finishing boots again by next season (which will make him an incredible player)
I expect bendtner, vela, walcott and even denilson to “click” at some point and become really dangerous players (as song and now diaby have done recently). Traore was almost there in his recent run in the side as well.
Gibbs was looking very close to top class before his injury, and I think eastmond and merida could follow on from that.
Nasri can only improve and will be the next rosicky.
Ramsey could be unstoppable in 2 years. Like fabregas crossed with gerrard!
And szczensy will be a world class goalkeeper. He might even break in next year.

There are a few risks involved that might require signings. For example if djourou nevr shakes his injury problems then at least another CB will definitely be required. Same for van persie, although I think its more likely we could find another forward from within the squad.

      • Joe 71 says:

KEEP DREAMING MY FIREND – DO U WORK FOR WENGER OR WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM ? U SOUND EXACTLY JUST LIKE HIM – AS IF THERE ARE GAURANTEES THAT THESE PLAYERS U NAME WILL ALL BE WORLD BEATERS. TRY BALANCING THE GOOD WITH THE BAD – IN THE LANGUAGE U DONT UNDERSTAND THAT IS CALLED OBJECTIVITY. WHAT IF FAB OR OTHER TOP PLAYERS LEAVE THIS SUMMER (AS HAVE BEEN THE CASE SINCE THIS ROTTEN RUN OF OURS STARTED) ? DID U MAKE ALLOWANCES FOR THAT ?

  • s.a gooner says:

very very dissapointed in wenger,no question that we have the money available and a striker was a necessity to bring in,we could even have signed victor moses for next to nothing, wigan got a real bargain. next season we will see the likes of manonne and scezny in goal so i dont think we need a keeper right now.does anybody know when exactly havard nordveidt’s loan spell finishes, cant wait to see him in an arsenal jersey, would also like to see more of JET.

  • Sam says:

This is a touchy subject, which I think is fueled by a lot of emption after losing to the Mancs. If we had lost to another team, maybe there wouldn’t be such an uproar, but I think Gooners, our pride is hurt more than anything, agree? It’s really difficult to cirticize Wenger after what he’s done for us, but then again, it’s really difficult no to after the past few seasons. I think what infuriates the fans is, not so much him not buying a striker, but his stubborness about it. After the Man U game, when asked the quesiton, his repsonse was a straight NO, and to be honest, that pissed me off. I think the fans, especially since we’ve put up with so many seasons without a trophy at least deserve an explanation instead of just NO. So I think that’s why us gooners are pissed off, we have a right to know WHY. As a manager myself (not a football manager) I hate it when people try to tell me I don’t know what I’m doing when they have no clue what I do. So, does the average fan really know how a football team is run? The dynamics of what goes on in the boardroom? Probably not, so can we really quesiton AW’s decisions. At first I would say no, but as a fan, I would then at least like an explanation!! We deserve that much don’t we??? So it’s Wenger’s arrogance and stubborness that’s got Gooners wanting his head. If he was at least more transparent, we would understand his decisions and stick by him, but he acts like Arsenal belongs to him and we don’t need to know shit!
Oh wait, he has given us an explanation for not spending.. let’s look at what he said shall we?
He said he can’t buy because he hasn’t found a striker better than what we currently have. Now that would make sense and it’s a good reason, except, I can think of many players on the market at the time who are better than what we have at the moment.
He also said that with the return of Bendtner, he doesn’t need another striker. Ok? He’s talking as if Bendtner was some prolific goal scorer before he got injured, and even if he was, do you expect someone to come back from injury and win the season for you??? Even RVP is gonna need some time to adjust when he comes back.
Then he said, we have the best goal scoring record in the league so why do we need another striker. Let’s not forget that goal scoring record has come from scoring high against weaker teams, but to win the league we have to beat the likes of Man U and Chelsea.
So, I’m not sure what to feel or think when it comes to Wenger, except that it becomes increasingly frustrating to watch Arsenal play these days. I’m tired of the beautiful football, I’ll take an ugly win. Look, with the injures we had, and with the squad he’s left with, Aw has done suoerb to get us even in the title race, but knowing that, why doesn;t he strengthen the squad. and who else can you blame for giving Almunia and Denilson a start in the game, is it not HIS decision?? It’s very hard to decide whether I should hate AW or not. The game against Man U could have gone our way so easily, if Arshavin took those 2 chances early on, or if he wasn’t selfish and squared it in the box. That would have been a different outcome and we would all be singing AW’s praises right now.
So I’m just staying neutral for now, coz if Aw pulls off a miracle against Chelsea, then we’re back in the title race with RVP set for an ealry return, then I’ll end up eating my hat, so I’d rather just be neutral for now. Let’s wait and see…
To all those Gunners gans who say we don’t stand a chance against Chelsea, I agree, but as a Gooner you can’t help but hope, and I know all of you out there (even the ones who are pissed off right now) will be watching the game and hoping. What else do we have but hope? We can’t stop being a Gooner now can we? Once a Gooner, a Gooner for life!

  • Pat Rice says:

All you wannabe Arsenal fans mustn’t ever forget that Wenger is our best manager EVER, and yes I really thought he needed to buy 1. Lloris(GoalKeeper) 2.Subotic(Defender) 3.Hangeland(Defender), 4.Van Der Wiel(LB), 5.Hazard(next C.Ronaldo),6.Keko(from Atletico next Messi/Torres),7.Melo or Miguel Veloso(CDM),8. Poldolski(St),9. Huntelaar(st) and 10.Dzeko(st), and get rid of 1.Traore,2. Alumina,3. Fabianski,4. Silvstre,5. Dudu,6. Eboue, 7 Sanchez Watt, 8. Denilson, 9.Randal, 10.Coquelin

Another BIG question in my mind is wouldn’t Pep Guadiola make a perfect Arsenal manager afer Wenger?

    • Davi says:

Mate, edu has only just come back from injury really and is so close to being an awesome player again.
We missed him against Utd, he is more of a natural attacker than the others we have on the wings and carves out chances for himself and others. When he gets his finishing back hel be a top forward.
And eboue has been excellent in most of his performances this season. Hes another who could have made a difference if he started the game. His directness is a threat, but more importantly hes good in 1-on-1s and that seemed to be one area we were weak – which is unusual in an arsenal team.
Traore was largely very good during his run in the side, but has a few things to learn still admittedly – not worth getting rid of though!
And why you would want to get rid of randall, coquelin and watt is beyond me. They havent really had a chance to develop yet. I dont see what that would achieve and its just throwing away the chance of producing some more good players through the youth system.

Also all those players you mention… Most of those players would either be insanely expensive or run more than a slight risk of being very disappointing (huntelaar). Imo dzeko (or villa) would probably be worth spending big on if any, but I think it childish to demand the club spend 30m on one player personally.
There are other reasons we havent signed players like hazard – being one of the most promising midfielders in europe, we have a lot of competition. Im sure the kid has had plenty of offers from us and others, and if he wanted to leave right at this moment, he would have done. I think in the real world these deals are not so easy to accomplish as you might believe.

  • bk says:

u know mr. money saver what we need was not mircle to stay on the title race, what we needed was a good striker and a good keeper. we tired of this shit!!!!!

  • Sammy Gee says:

What the hell are u saying The_gunner_4ever? Just change ur name to kids_gonner_4ever! How pathetic.

Should we die waiting for ur planted trees to bare fruits? Can’t u see the stupid problems we’ve been facing for 5 long waiting seasons?

5yrs ago, where those kids called babies? Shouldn’t they have grown with the qualities AW always said they poccess?
How much longer shall we continue to wait & shall we be decieved by AW???

The problem arsenal’s having for long is Arsene Wenger.
SACK HIM! He doesn’t give a shit how we’ll feel.

We can all see that there’s no trophy for arsenal this season again except a MIRACLE happens & if we don’t get no trophy, I’m afraid that our top players like Cesc, arshavin, van Persie might leave.

  • John says:

unfortunately, arsenal has lost the battle due solely to bad coach – wenger
he should be shown the exit door b/4 the club obituary is announced
against chelsea another 3 ponits lost.
    what a mess

  • Bazi says:

We desperately need a striker than any other club in the world….All wenger know is buy a striker for 1m or 2m and sell them for 20m or 25m…This is not a time to show his business skills…need to splash out money for buying a striker

  • mr_potato72 says:

wonder what Wenger think about Arsenal. May b he just right because even real madrid with so many star player cant get the top of La Liga and has been knocked out of the Copa del Rey . or may b wenger is wrong with his young player policy. we all dont know this

  • pete says:

If you say ‘there’s no guarantee that a new player will actually help us win anything’, then you must also accept the position ‘there’s no guarantee a new player won’t help us win anything’. We could’ve used chamakh, inler and others, but instead of being sincere, club management decided in all their wisdom that it would be a better idea to go ahead and insult the transfer market, alert the professional football community to our sham dealings in the transfer market as well as putting off any experienced players who might want to play with us because ‘we’re a youngster club’.

Contrary to the endless propaganda from club management we are actually poorly positioned for future success. And that gets supporters who pay top prices to watch second best very upset.

  • Geo says:

People here act like if we bought Chamakh or huntelear it would fix our problems…. if you believe that please YOU should get your arse out of your head. We need help with our defense and definetely at gk. Unless your plan is to outscore our opponents everygame.. Just about any of our players can score. I am not saying they wouldnt help, but our priority should be our defense.

I would like to have seen Vela loaned out to actually see him in the field.
