Arsene Wenger after the Chelsea defeat, “We felt we were the better team”

Submitted by Jeffrey on February 8, 2010 – 4:30 29 Comments

A draw against Aston Villa and back-to-back defeats against Manchester United and Chelsea mean that Arsenal have a mountain to climb if they want to be crowned champions at the end of the season.

Speaking of yesterday’s 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, Arsene Wenger believes the Gunners were the better team, the same words he declared after the 3-0 defeat at the Emirates.

Speaking to Sky Sports 1, the Frenchman added how his side are now outsiders for the title but will keep on fighting until the end.

He said:

It is difficult to swallow a defeat like that when we felt we were the better team.

Chelsea defended well until the last minute so you have got to give them credit.

We are [now] outsiders but we will fight until the last day of the season. I believe everyone can drop points. Let’s come back to win our next game first and then see where we stand.

How were we the better team?
Because we controlled the ball and the lobbed it into the box for the chelski’s to head out?
First half chelsea had 2 shots and scored twice, I think that is the better team

u are right man, Arsen Wenger thinks that beautiful football is all about possesion and pass pass pass without result, and he thinks if u do that then u are a better side. I can guaranty that even cheski and liverpool can do it. I have seen cheski doing it in many games but of course they dont against us cose they have one thing in their minde, lets score against arsenal and then lets play beautiful football against wolvs. My dear mr.Wenger we are not playing beautiful foot.anymore thats for sure. Watch Barcelona and u will understand it.

      A. Wenger must be dreaming and living in his own world of football. How can Arsenal be the better team? Arsenal was completely outplayed in the match much like the game against MU. Arsenal started strongly again until the 1st goal scored by Drogba. I strongly believed the greatest problem with Arsenal is not the lack of fire power but the goalkeeper. Almunia is certainly the weakest link in the starting 11 and he put the team on tremendous pressure with his poor performance. It’s not easy to come from a goal down when you are playing against strong teams like MU, Chelsea and Liverpool. They will punish you on the counter attack and that is exactly what they did to Arsenal. Did you noticed that Almunia had his eyes closed when Drogba hammered in his 2nd goal….he was so afraid of the ball! There is no chance for Arsenal to win anything this season or next until A. Wenger changes the keeper!!!

  • Still loser says:

I bet i can be a better coach than wenger, what on earth he cant see that a world class striker is needed (Liverpool gt Torres, Man U got Rooney, Chelsea gt Drogba…..)
A goalkeeper is needed as welllllllllll

  • Saintyjones says:

Fool. I made a bet that Arsenal will lose and it happened. Should i really be doing that as an Arsenal fan? No. Wenger made it so. Liverpool will beat us. Our fight for 4th place starts on wednesday

  • indiangunner says:

how on earth was arsenal the better team.when is wenger going to learn.Once again he plays w/o a striker – result is 0 penetration. It is just hopeful passing around the final 3rd..hoping that somebody makes an error or somebody gets caught out of position. The players themselves dont believe they can beat chelsea.time to get rid of some players.

  • supasam8 says:

the real sin was playing walcott, i like to back wenger, but bendtner wouldve been a shit ton better

  • chuks says:

I am totally confused on what is going on with Wenger, i know he is intelligent but what i don’t understand is how he thinks and views his team.

  • GUN says:

ITS CLEAR WE CAN’T COMPETE WITH THE TOP TEAMS!!! THE BETTER TEAM WINS THE GAME ARSE WENGER!!!! YOU NEED A TOP STIKER TO WIN LEAGUE TITLES & IT’S SAD TO SAY THAT OUR FORMATION & BUILD-UP IS PREDICATABLE. TRYING TO PLAY LIKE BARCA WILL PERHAPS WORK IN LA LIGA!!!! TRYING TO SING PLAYERS ON DEADLINE DAY – IT’S CLEAR WENGER HAS LOST THE PLOT!!! HE WILL SELL THE LIKES OF NASRI, FABREGAS, SAGNA, DIABY & SONG TO THE SPANISH LEAGUES SOONER OR LATER!!!! IT WAS CLEAR PRE-SEASON WE NEEDED REINFORCEMENTS…NOW OUR SEASON IS IN TATTERS ONCE AGAIN!!!!

    • albanian gooner says:

trying to play with Barcelona style?!!! When is the last time u have seen Barcelona playing football mate? Hahahaha its totaly different football, the only thing we are doing is pasing the boll with no idea what is going on. There are two or three players that are giving us little beautiful moments sometimes, they are Fabregas, Arshavin and … no one els actualy. The days when we admire our style of football has gonne, the time when we had, Bergamp,Henry,Pires,Ljumberg,Viera,i have to say Ashly Cole(seeing Clichy these days makes me remember him again) is a past time now. How the hell can we play beautiful foot.and win with style with the likes of Denilson, Sagna, Eduardo, i hate to say but i have to Walcott, Clichy, and an idiot goalkeeper, only Wenger knows.

  • DURBAN_GUN says:

this defeat came down to 2 factors

1# firstly we have the worse keeper in the premier league who is proving to be a serious liability
2# we dont have a DESCENT STRIKER UPFRONT !!

conclusion: drogba put them 2 up with 2 chances and peter check made sure it stayed that way

  • kushal says:

yeah, we were better than the blues in the second half. if we had not conceeded two soft early goals, who knows we could have beaten chelsea.
if we avoid early goals against liverfool then we have a good chance to finish the season on a high.
    gunner4ever!!!

  • Arshadin says:

Arsenal will and always be a better team,on next season it will be better.I m Arsenal for life.
Ofcoz Chelsea is on pressure to win the the title, looking at the money they have thrown. If they dont, they will be looking for another Manager to make them THE CHAMPION in another season with another debt.

  • oz_gooner says:

I know a few gooners out there will disagree on my point of view but i will share it anyway..

We did and do have quality strikers in the arsenal team.. V.Persie is unfortunately injured.., eduardo isnt quite there yet but we couldnt expect too much from him in his year back.. and ofcourse last of all..the quality striker that we did have and lost was adebayor..

I know people hate him now and quite a few disliked him even when he was playing for arsenal.. but like it or not gooners, he was a quality striker… He had technical skills was strong, had quite good pace for a man of his size and great in the air especially for those crosses that we now get and are lost in no mans land.

Fine..we got rid of a player that was supposedly unsettling the club.. thats all well and good..

But we didnt replace our quality striker with another.. pure and simple..

We are lucky that fabregas is having a good year for us because he has kicked most of the goals so far if im correct. arshavin has kicked a few and lesser likes ..vermaelen and also gallas.

Bentdner is no adebayor ( in terms of quality and skill )..and most likely will never be.. i hope im wrong about that..

Arsene wenger has underestimated the real value and quality of an experienced strong and proven striker.. I would of prefferedd we got rid of bentnder for a few bob and kept ade..

    • albanian gooner says:

i agree, actualy Adebayor is the only player that we have mised so much. We sold Viera but we found someone better which is Fabregas, we lost Henry but without him we did even better. This seasen we sold Adebayer, we sold him just after he became a real cuality world class striker. And now i am sure we could have donne much better against man u and cheski. Where is the point keeping a player when he is sh..t and paying him, work on him, making him one of the best strikers and after all these things sell him, sell him to a ciub that next seasen will be a new chellsea, a new force in the EPL!

  • aj says:

We didn’t create enough chances for the possession we had.Until the manager realises that it’s the goals you score and the trophies you win that counts, expect more of the same.Wenger is an idealist and they will always be defeated by realist.

  • ibrahim says:

I consider wenger as a best couch ever in the history of EPL , what an encouraging manager he is ! no daubt all of us believe in the strenght of the Gunners and they are in their original style still but more effort is required it dosn’t mean that two consegative loss is agiveup or beating arsenal means going with atrophy i say still there is achance for the youngisters keep going forward ever

  • Blurgh says:

I can’t wait to see us in the Champions League without a proper striker, what a joke.. how can anyone honestly expect us to win it?

  • old timer says:

There is an old saying “Actions speak louder than words”
I just wish Arsene Wenger would shut up after every loss and do something positive with this team.I am not a football expert but to see him picking the same players every game even though ,like Almunia, they have had a shocker makes me wonder what he does to earn his money.Even lesser quality teams drop players if they have’nt got it but at Arsenal nowadays they get a pat on the back and its called a learning curve because they’re only young.Give us a break.I’ve watched Arsenal since the late 1950’s when I lived in Hackney but now I’m in Australia I still watch every game ,but it’s getting harder to get the enthusiasm to get up in the small hours.
Thats enough complaining for now.I just hope the cheque book comes out during the summer for a Goalie, Striker, and a winger who can cross the ball to his own teammate.

  • IBBS says:

THIS is worse than THE DROGBA DIDN’T DO MUCH QUOTE.

  • Pat Rice says:

I know it’s not the right time but I’ll confess anyway…… There aint no other club like Arsenal and I will now and forever be a gooner no matter what. Sorry about that just had to get it off my chest, anyway yesterday’s performance was a 5 in a scale of 1 to 10, I took out 3 from ten for us being caught on the counter AGAIN, some very wise gooner fan said last week that Arsenal’s counter attack problem is so severe that it wouldn’t just take 1 game to learn from it, and he was right. The other 2 I took out from the 10 was Alumnia’s performance although there wasn’t anything he could do about the goals, but for his lack of skill and talent. Wenger is our greatest manager but like Wenger underestimated the power of a quality striker and a world class keeper who actually has an international cap. I know we have RVP and he’s more than enough but we know how injured RVP gets. Here’s a list of players Arsenal need to become a good to a great team.

1)Hugo Lloris (Almunia out) ………. Can’t wait until Wojcech Sczceny becomes no1
2)Edin Dzeko……….. Just imagine Dzeko, Arshavin and RVP upfront, who wouldn’t be afraid
3)Eden Hazard(long term replacement if Cesc leaves)……the next C.Ronaldo we should get.
4)Subotic (replacement for Gallas)……. Vermaelen and Subotic both command the back line and score goals, absolutely flawless

  • Womble says:

Wenger’s becoming an embarrassment. We are becoming a bit of a joke under him now. Other fans are laughing at us, playing midgets like Arshavin and Walcott as sole strikers, etc. He’s losing it. I think we are definitely witnessing the twilight of his time with us.

  • Eries says:

Arsen Wenger is one of the best, if not the best “financial” managers in EPL. He manages to reach champions leaque with relatively inexperienced youngsters at a very low cost to company. We want results so it is about time Wenger spent on experienced prereformed player if we want to carry any trouphy at all. A good team is a team of experienced players with a blent of youngsters for sprinting purposes. Maybe we need to miss out on the 4th spot for drastic changes and action to take place?

  • joe says:

a better team wins games let us not be distracted
its time to give mannone a chance i m sick and tired of aluminia
but i know wenger doest give a toss
    better game than manure one

  • Sammy Gee says:

Wenger SUCKS! Sinply sack him. He had discraced us enough. Now man u & chelski do score us like shit & share 10 goals amongs themselves. It’s very unfortunate.

  • Herbert says:

Total delusion from a man who knows better or may have lost is touch…!!!
AW has become more of a moaner than anything else…
Always finding excuses… I think that he is taking us down with him…

To be drastic a change might be needed… He has forgotten how he was so successful with the club… !!! But again it might not be down to him alone… What about the players responsibilities? What about the board responsibility? What about Gazidis continual bullshit and rubbish allegations? What about the “ghost” cash?…

We are only supporters, fans, whatever you want to call it and all those “fools” (yes, including Wenger) have responsibilities towards us…

A sit at the Emirates is one of the most expensive in Europe… Sorry for saying so, but we need answers and results…

No trophies in almost 5 years, I call it a fiasco and bad management…!!!
