Determined Arsene Wenger: We can win both the Premiership and Champions League

Submitted by Jeffrey on February 25, 2010 – 4:00 25 Comments

After Theo Walcott, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger also believes that the Gunners can lift both the Premiership and Champions League this season. Arsenal are six points from leaders Chelsea and need to recover from a 2-1 defeat in the Champions League, with the Frenchman admitting how these two trophies are what his side decided to fight for at the start of the season.

Speaking to the club’s official magazine, Wenger added how there is only one option for his squad and it’s that of winning all remaining games, and of course hope for the rest of the pack to drop points.

Wenger said:

There are three clubs in the fight for the championship – when you see how much money the others have invested, we have not to be ashamed.

There are two main trophies in our job – the Champions League and the Premier League; today, we can still win them both. In addition, the club is in a healthy situation and we have a fantastic young side.

What other people think is less important – what happens here is the deciding factor, along with how much belief we put into our game. We are in a fantastic position and it is now about how we turn it our way.

In the position we are in, we do not need to calculate – the best way is to win one game, and then win the next one. I believe Arsenal fans can be very proud of their club, and that is at least what we try to give them – pride.

if wenger loose, mourinho can replaced, kids need play fondly

  • John Muhindo says:

It`s possible to win both trophies if arsenal players keep focus on every game they play and strive to win it.

  • Popoola says:

I believe in Arsene and i love the way he gives the young players confidence but i must admit, its a high and steep mountain to climb. What is the latest about Galindo et al

  • TEIGONG says:

Arsenal are closing the agap at the top so the title is yet again going into another twist man u one point behind and chelsea will loose to man city on saturday like wise arsenal will beat stoke city squarely and comprehensively if Roy Delap Drop balls is restricted to their half. arsenal do turn the title alive agian

  • Aussie Jack says:

Stoke have been the bogy side for many teams this season including Arsenal, to beat them on their own turf is ,for me ,quite an achievement so, based on that, we`ll get a fair idea if Wengers predictions are valid after the weekend encounter.

  • A.aziz says:

As an Arsenal fan, I’ve a lot of respect for Arsen Wenger, and any Arsenal player. What they said which is we gonna win the pl and cl. That is far beyond the reality. Dont they know that to win the pl we already rely on the dropping points of Man u and Chelsea? Two teams which are much stronger than us. The cl, we already lost one leg so we only have 50% chance of proceeding. What I’m trying to say is that look at our keepers and strikers and compare them with theirs and you will see the different that makes a team champions. If bendtner gets injured again who is gonna come in for him, even there is a question mark on whether he can be our main striker or not. Bendtner will be one of the greatest strikers under Arsen Wenger, but for now he still has to improve a lot and at the moment he cant take that big responsibility of being the main striker at a team like Arsenal which there is a lot of pressure from the fans on them to deliver a trophy. I hope Wenger wakes us and sings some more players like Arshavin and Vermaelen.

  • keith says:

Without doubt Stoke away is the hardest game we have left
If our keeper commands his box we will win if not we will loose need new players at this club and either loan or sell others my ins and outs in the summer would be

    Keeper
Joe Hart great form this year should be availible for 8 million

    Defence
Ryan Shawcross of stoke would have an England call up if he where playing for Arsenal should be availible for 8 million

    Midfield
Ya Ya Torre Barcalona will fancy a move after a unhappy year at the club 15 million should secure

    Striker
    Chamka on a free

    Total spent 31 million

    Out
Clichy seems to have gone backwards and Kiren Gibbs is a bright prospect should fetch 20 million

Sagna again not the player he was can nor cross a ball to save his life Eboue is a better should fetch 15 million

Denilson not strong enough in this league more suited to italian style should fetch 10 million

Vela loan he needs games and will not get them with Arsenal

    total in 45

a 15 million profit while improving the team

    • Vijay says:

      You’re still playing “Championship Manager”?

Note to brain: it’s only software … it’s not real life … it’s not how the world works.

Another note to brain: a “free” costs money (loads of it) … selling Sagna and Clichy will weaken us big time … and you forgot to get rid of Almunia and Fabianski in your rush for money … what of Gallas and Campbell next season … I could go on.

Quit selling our players and start supporting them … as a team! Or you could start collecting your badges, become a top manager, and really find out what AW has to do outside “cloud cuckoo land”.

    • lucbyrnes says:

10 million for denilson? from who?

  • mutiu jimoh says:

to win both cup uuuh a big task but lets wait and see if they beat stoke on saturday then porto will fall on 9 march by 4-0

  • BOOZY says:

NOW HOW MANY TIMES, HAVE WE HEARD THAT FROM AW.

  • Vijay says:

First we have to win away @ Stoke; and then get through against Porto.

Of course we can win both the Premier League and the Champion’s League, but only in the same way as our rivals can.

It’s not AW’s determination that will achieve this, but the determination of our players …

… match after match after match.

    This I’ve got to see.

  • Chris says:

    Well let’s face it.

If we go on and do win the title, it will be because Chelsea failed to keep an 11 and an 8 point lead at the top. If something like that happens to us, players and Wenger will surely be under heavy criticism. Now I’m not sure if Ancelotti is, but questions should be raised when this happens.

Having said that, the Champions League is different. As funny as it may sound, that is our opportunity to show that we are on the same level of the top clubs in Europe. Going back to the Premiership, we lost four times vs Chelsea and United, clearly showing we’re not on their same level, but the Champions League could gift us the opportunity to rubbish this and show we’re as good as anyone.

Sure, we have to pass the Porto test first.

  • Papaa Slim says:

We might be in a very good position in both competitions, but my analysis of our season has not changed. ARSENAL can not win the EPL (EPL season is over).

Lets concentrate on the Champions league, I believe we stand a chance in Europe but should first of all beat Porto.

  • lanesra says:

We WILL win against Stoke (not easily but a great team effort will give us 2 goals in a hard-fought match) and then our run-in looks favourable. But, sadly winning the Prem is not in our hands so we must rely on winning our remaining fixtures and others dropping points. It IS possible but now we need the luck that has deserted us all season… As for Porto, we’ll have a far stronger team and no CL fixture is easy but we can score first early (I predict Arsharvin who loves performing well on an international stage) and see out the tie… After that, the CL is a very steep mountain to climb given the teams left in it. Let’s hope is won’t be Chavs or Man u!

  • summer breez says:

Yes i believe we can win in both compitions but team should wake up and realize that they got what it takes to be champions but they got to understand each other communicate and get their game plan on we supporters have to become a lot louder in our support of our team Mr wegner should be on the pitch working with tactics and have players adapt to them with success but also realise that some tactics have low success rate and to concentrate on the one that the team are capable in doing and to have them practiced to perfection we are coming into the end of the season its break or make so come on man let’s do the job and do a good job lets take it to a new dimension with stars like fabergas song diaby rosicky archivan edwardo varmalin nasri galas ebue cambel benthner vanpersie ramsy vela wallcot clyshy sanga danilson alumonia i stand by you ,you all are world class but yet some have to imprint your name so com on let us play football win come on let us all stand and support louder after all it is our Arsenal com on Arsenal we can do it lets do it

  • Gunner says:

I am totally with Vijay and Mutio on this one, yes of course Arsenal can win either or both! If Chelsea or MU were 6 back with 10 to go would you write them off? Not at all. However, The guys are right, how many times have we heard that before? I agree that tactically Wenger should be more flexible tactically. Against the big 2 the counter punch ruined Arsenal, so his tactics were wrong! Different teams play different style with different personnel, a manager need’s to address that game to game.
Vijay’s point about team determination is critical!!! A determined team thinks totally with the goal in mind! Everything they do reflects that. The 2nd goal conceded in Porto did not reflect a determined Arsenal team! It reflected a nonchalant attitude of ’someone will save us’. That mentality is simply not good enough!
Not sure I agree that the CL is more realistic than the Title! Why? Because to win the CL Arsenal will have to come from behind against Porto, then play at least 2 out of likely Inter or Chelsea, Barca, Real, and of course the Manc’s. I haven’t seen enough defensive aggression and commitment in either the midfield or at the back this season to suggest that a tie with any of those will bear fruit for Arsenal. By contrast the Championship sees Arsenal at Stoke, home to Spurs and Man City as maybe the toughest fixtures on paper at least! Again from what I have seen this year I would say those sort of games would suit Arsenal better? Hope I am only half right!

  • Recardo says:

I wish wenger wouldn’t say things like this because he puts the club under pressure. Why doesn’t he just keep quiet and let the team perform. That way if we lose it won’t be a shame. Its good to believe but keep it to yourself wenger because you might be contradicting yourself again!!!

  • Gunner says:

I will second that Recardo. He has a history of bad timing with a few of his statements past!
To make matters worse, this team has a habit of throwing it right back in his face with a nightmare performance to boot!
I still can’t get over last season’s CL Semi when he said after the 1st leg that ‘you will see the real Arsenal in the 2nd leg’. Well we saw that all right!!!! in no uncertain terms!!!!
You are right, it is essential to believe and to be determined, but keep it quiet please! Channel it into the next performance! Go out and ‘SHOW’ it!!!!
I think they can beat Stoke definitely, but they are going to have to really stand up and be counted!!! Let’s face it, this team is suspect as far as that goes! It starts with dealing with the long throw!!! It’s not like Arsenal don’t know its coming!

  • John Muhindo says:

Dear Recordo and Gunner why support in fear. You must talk and show you are strong. Commanding in soccer is good. Do you remember Jose Morihno “the special one” he used to make Premier league very interesting for his words. Let them talk and we enjoy

  • Gunner says:

John I guess you make a good point! If no one talked it up would we find it boring? Maybe! Sounds like you enjoy hearing them talk if up! If so well I guess that’s fine too.
I would be interested to hear how Recardo feels about that but for me I am way too applied and am much more more comfortable with a low key and focused approach! Focused on the job at hand!
As an Arsenal supporter I want to see the team approach things the same way! It is not out of a ‘fear’ that I prefer that approach, on the contrary. It is just that I believe it is a more successful method of doing the job! It is always easy to state beforehand what the team want to do. However it is much harder to ‘do’ what the team want to do. The ‘do’ part requires a lot of energy and focus. So if you believe in that then you are always going to believe it best to channel all mental activity toward the objective. I want to see the manager and the team follow that!
Past results show that getting distracted has proven costly for this Arsenal team! We only have to look over recent matches to see that!
