Emmanuel Adebayor: I didn’t leave for the money, Arsene Wenger didn’t want me anymore

Written by Jeffrey on March 1, 2010 – 4:00

On April 24, former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor will have to face his old fans as Manchester City will travel to London to face Arsenal, in what could be a very important game for the Gunners. Speaking to French television channel Canal Plus on this, the Togo International declared he knows it will not be easy to step on the pitch as the Arsenal people will boo him throughout the 90 minutes.

Adebayor was under heavy criticism and suspended for three games after the two sides met on September, game in which the striker first caused an injury to Robin van Persie and then celebrate a goal in front of the Arsenal supporters.

Ahead of the April game, the 26-year old:

It will be 90 minutes of hell. The fans will boo me, insult me, because, until now, they haven’t understood why I left. I’m the bad guy. I shouldn’t have done that (the celebration) but we are all human. I made a mistake, but who doesn’t?

Speaking on his departure from the North London Club, the striker declared he never wanted to leave but was forced out by manager Arsene Wenger, adding how if money was the reason for joining Manchester City, he would have left before that to join either AC Milan in Italy or Barcelona in Spain.

Adebayor concluded:

Arsene Wenger can never say that I wanted to leave. It was because Arsene didn’t want me anymore. If Arsene has a big heart we can go on a TV show to have a debate and he will never say I told him I wanted to leave the club.

He’ll never say that. He knows it full well. I respect him enormously, and he knows that, but the most annoying thing about the whole story is when people say I wanted to leave for the money. If I had really wanted to, I would have left two years ago for the money and gone to Milan or Barcelona.

I read that it was me who was the troublemaker in the changing room. That’s unbelievable. If one player can say that I, Emmanuel Adebayor, spoke badly to anyone in the changing rooms then I’d honestly like to know who it is. It has never happened in my life.
