Arsene Wenger: I want Manchester United or Chelsea in the next round of the Champions League

Submitted by Jeffrey on March 10, 2010 – 4:30 38 Comments

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is fully aware of the fact that even if the Gunners are still fighting for both the Premiership and the Champions League, there is still something missing this season after they lost four times – twice against Manchester United and twice against Chelsea – in the English Premiership.

Speaking on this after his side’s 5-0 win against Porto, the Frenchman declared it would be a good opportunity if they are to be drawn against English team as it would be their chance to show that they are on the same level of the other two teams.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said:

I have a funny feeling, maybe it’s good for us to play an English team. We have not done well against Chelsea and not done well against Man Utd. this year and it would be a good opportunity to show that we can do it against them.

[On Bendtner] How quickly football changes. I hope that will not give him too much confidence but I am happy for him. He had a good game on Saturday but missed plenty of chances and three days later he has less chances and scores three goals. It’s good for his confidence and I hope it will give him the desire to work even harder.

    ARE YOU MAD!!!!

    • Emmanuel says:

WAT DO U MEAN, BY ARE U MAD? DATS D FACT. PEOPLE SAID NO V. PERSIE, NO ARSENAL; NO ARSHAVIN, NO ARSENAL. THE SAME FOR FABREGAS, SONG AND THE REST. WE COULD TAKE ON UNITED OR CHELSEA, AND STILL GO TRU. I WOULD HAVE LOVE TO SEE HOW UTD WOULD COPE WITHOUT ROONEY FOR UP TO 8 MONTHS. ARSENAL ARE COPING REALLY FINE, AND YET, PEOPLE STILL DISREGARD THEM. VERY SHAMEFUL. I HOPE ARSENAL MEET UNITED.

      • yeah me too, I would love to see us in the 1/4 finals against those fagots! it’s pay back time!!!!!!!!!

Keep dreaming boys. This happens every time ‘The Arsenal’ have a good result.

All of a sudden your problems are forgotten and you think you are world beaters. Its embarassing but one day you will learn.

As a United Fan I too hope to get Arsenal in the next round as they are probably one of the weaker sides left in the competition alongside Lyon.

Lets just see where we all lie in May shall we.

well vlatko for the first time ever i think i agree with you 100% . how good would it feel to wax those chumps. you know they dont want to play us.

      • pete says:

If we sneak into the cl final somehow, one of chels, manu or barca will crush us in the end. They don’t need to score five goals to win, they know how to close up the back. We beat porto and now this nonsense, remember everton at the start of the season?

    • CoreluvArsenal says:

I think trying to get revenge on ManUtd or Chelsea could actually blow up in our faces. Because simply, that’s not what should be on our minds. But also, if we are ahead of them by then on the EPL table, they would be desperate to win, to get at least some silverwear. And that could prove to our advantage, because we will play with confidence and belief, whereas they will be under pressure to perform, and I think that could be too much for them to handle. However, in fact I think we played really well against both those sides, but our mistakes were the true reason behind those defeats. But, playing another team could be better, purely since that would suite our style of play, cause everytime a team tries to play our game, they get beaten and I think that other european sides would not be able to match our intensity and pacy play. In fact, my biggest worry is getting Bayern Munich, I would even settle for Barca, but Byern are definitely on the up, and always very very tricky to play against. But, I’m confident in our team, whoever we get drawn against. Go da Guuunneeerrrss!!!!

  • John Muhindo says:

The faith we have in Wenger worked yestarday as porto was left in suspense. Even they could not recall whether they won the first leg; Finally to pay Chelsea and Manchester in champion league is imported if they can escape this trap of to day and next week

  • Toskany says:

Yeah this is why i like my team, whenever we ar in a good mood any team will surely face our brutality, porto ‘ll not forget this game soon. Last time some of our fans were criticizing bentener 4 wasting many chances, but 2day he is the hero atleast it is not easy 2 score hatrick in a match that we needed so much. And lastly i pray that we ‘ll keep scoring like this, now that the league is 2 coming 2 an end so that at last we ‘ll lift trophy 4 v p, ramsey nd rest of our injured players. Yeah i’m proud to be a gunner. GOONERS 4LIFE

  • joe malta says:

hey fantastic game but wenger’s comments are so appropriate. he is indirectly telling the p layers not to get carried away with this result and he is right. he is telling niklas to work harder and that shows that our manager has his feet on the ground. Let us all remember that in the first 15 mins of the 2nd half we were living on our edge and that i was fearing that a porto goal would have eliminated us; so let us all keep supporting our team and hope. Wenger is right in saying that he wants a big gun in the quarters; anyway we have to face one and to win the throphy we must beat them. We have to show to everyone we are not schoolboys anymore. I
would prefer barca however as basically they play the same style of football. I didnt like almunia today. He had little to do and didnt do it the best he could. his clearances were awful.

  • Anthoney Njengah says:

Yesterdays game looked more of a computer game. Yes we need to show the blues and manu what we are made of…

  • sam Nkeera says:

maverick arsenal players and talented younger stars deserved it.we shd not think of Man u bse things can change like FC PORTO yesterday and there is a likehood of CHELSEA to be eliminated by Intermilan.

  • Arshadin says:

That is not good for Arsenal in the CL.As we have to be looking at the other best Europe teams for the young lads to gain the experience. We will get Utd and Chavs next season on double in EPL.
Aint we supposed to concentrate on 1 game at a time.Lets kick up for the next away at Hull…to be in the title run.No errors..

  • tanda says:

It was awesome, arsene knows: that’s all I can say

  • lanesra says:

I travel well over two hundred miles to watch every home game – and I’d take a plane to NZ to see that Nasri goal live. That’s the talent we bought and his commitment and skill was awesome last night. Song showed youthful fear at times but Nasri was fantastic across the midfield – at the start of so many charges. The question is, can he play off Fabregas when he returns? And, true, Campbell was heavy and sloppy at times but look at how he galvanised, kept everyone at the back concentrating. He knew how vital it was to stop Porto from scoring and he was the true captain last night. That left Vermaelen free to focus on his own excellent game. And I loved Arshavin’s master class but he must reign back and stop silly showmanship which had Wenger clenching his fists with frustration. Which reminds that Wenger’s choice and timing of subs was brilliant – fresh speedy legs closed the door on Porto’s overweight players who could hardly run in the last fifteen minutes. Surely Wenger’s comments about English opposition was to get his oar in first, to inspire confidence… After all, it is likely to happen so be positive about the possibility from here on in.

  • va va vooom says:

whats the bid deal? he did not say he wants to play them. he is just saying its a posibility and if ir hapens it would nt be a problem. peronaly i hop we dont because it seems our players are intimidated by those two teams because the never play well against them!!!!!

  • AS says:

Why do you people have to lie so often.

Wenger didn’t say he wanted MU or Chelsea.

When asked, he found a positive reason for Arsenal if, and only if, they were drawn together.

This is a far cry from your headline “I want MU etc….”

This manipulation of facts into headlines happens so often with blogs these days that their authors have become no better than the Fleet Street hacks and lie-peddlars that the web is destined to replace.

God, you people make me sick!

    • Chris says:

Arsene clearly said, “It’s good for us to play an English team”, so yes, in a way he is asking for an English team which unless I’m wrong it’s ManUtd or Chelsea.

So please consider this a warning for lack of respect towards a service which we are offering to you for free and make sure to avoid similar comments in the future. Also, if our headlines make you “sick”, consult a doctor because our headline is no different than Sky Sports’ “Wenger wants all-English tie”.

      • AS says:

        Again, out of context.

You quote: “It is good for us to play …”

But what he said was “maybe it is good for us to play …”

One is emphatic; the other qualified and conditional.

And under no circumstances was he asking for an English team. What was put to AW was “if you had a choice would you avoid English teams if they went through?” It was a loaded question. He obviously couldn’t say ‘Yes, because they’ve beaten us twice already’ … so he said “maybe, …” and further found something positive in his answer. So, when you write “Arsene clearly said ‘it’s good for us …’” it is wholly out of context and semantically not true.

This, of course, you already know as the best you can muster in your reply is “in a way (this was what he was saying)”. As for justifying your headline by equating it with Sky’s own … you have got to be kidding me?

Look, time after time, Arsenal has been on the negative side of inaccurate and misleading reporting. We know why it’s done and we hate it. What I don’t expect from fellow Arsenal fans is exactly the same kind of misrepresentation.

Of course I’m sick of this kind of standardless journalism, as each and every Arsenal fan should be.

And yes, I am a doctor, though not of medicine or psychology otherwise I could take you up on your suggestion. In any case I really don’t think need one.

        • Chris says:

Look, I will not argue with a reader for obvious reasons.

We get a lot of strange people but I have to confess never someone who hits his head against the wall for a simple headline, so I will try to explain it in the easiest possible way.

As I already told you, this is not the place to come and call people liars and you clearly have a serious problem if you take a simple headline so personally. I honestly don’t want to be near you if someone twists your words when speaking about you as using a shotgun is the least I would expect if this happens.

If you find our headlines misleading in any way, there are hundreds of other news-based websites on Arsenal out there where they maybe allow you to call people liars or whatever.

Our website is about respect and if you’re sick of a simple headline about a football team, yes a football team, then I’m sorry but our website is not the place for you.

  • I think critics are good for bendtner, because he knew he was the only striker available so he kind of played lazy football, he wasn’t concentrated and sharp enough, but after a huge wave of critics over the past 3 days he realised that he’s not the most important person in arsenal and reacted just like he was expected to do last night, ;)

  • HK Gooner says:

It actually makes sense if you consider the scheduling – ManU and Chelsea play each other in early April and the 1st legs of the Quarter Finals are played 30/31 March. With the injuries and suspension problems of those two teams, it puts extra pressure on them if we do draw a ManU and Chelsea. Better the devil you know…

  • Hash says:

I hope should Man Utd and Chelsea go through, they will face each other. Hopefully Arsenal can avoid the quarter final fixture against them, Barcelona and Real Madrid, should all of them qualify. But it’s so difficult. Just hope Arsenal will get a good draw.

  • Amd says:

What a full brainless comment by Soni J.J. You can see how Man Utd and Chelsea struggle so much without Rooney and Cech. We face both of them without some of key players like Van Persie and Diaby (for Man Utd). I expect the result will be of course, different as if Arsenal have them. Man Utd and Chelsea face more disappointing results against smaller teams rather than Arsenal. Funny statement, clown.

  • despo says:

oh Wenger, how can you be such a clown?

  • gaara119 says:

i want to thrash man utd in the 1/4 final if they r unlucky to avoid us.
