Wigan vs Arsenal, 3-2: Full time analysis and player ratings

Written by Chris on April 18, 2010 – 21:00

The Game

And Wigan hammer the final nail in the Arsenal coffin. As if West Ham away wasn’t enough to show the lack of character of this squad, there goes a two goal lead this afternoon with the usual goalkeeping mistake just to make sure the usual pattern is followed.

After his famous clown antics with the fourth official on the touchline, Arsene Wenger will surely come up with all the excuses in the world after the game to try and justify his stubbornness, his persistence in keep on hiding problems which even blind people can see, like that a new goalkeeper was needed months and months ago.

At the end of the day, I realise that any other manager would have put Robin in as soon as we went 0-2 up to try and improve the goal average record and keep our title hopes alive. That is what a manager with a winning mentality does. Instead no, we are again here talking about the “what would have been if”, a game which I frankly don’t want to play anymore.

To conclude, a thought which came right after watching Rafael Nadal win another tennis title, a young man who knows what never die attitude means. For a team who was supposed to do anything to win the title for Aaron Ramsey, well I’m not sure I would find the joke a funny one if I were in the Welshman’s shoes.

Player Ratings

Fabianski: 3 – Why bother believing that we can win something when the men who defend our goal are Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski? Uncomfortable from kick-off and guilty of dropping the ball as if it was a ball of fire.

Silvestre: 5 – Ask any Arsenal fan what they think of him and they will say he is a bomb ready to explode at any time. And that’s spot on. Top class game before some shocking positioning in the final 10 minutes of the game.

Campbell: 6,5 – I feel for him. Working so hard to see all his work destroyed by some shocking defending from his team mates is incredibly sad for someone who knows what fighting is.

Clichy: 5,5 – N’Zogbia was given too much space to attack and questions will also be asked on Gael’s positioning when Wigan scored.

Sagna: 5 – Completely torn apart by Moses after the introduction of the Wigan left winger. To be fair to him, Wenger did absolutely nothing to offer extra protection to Bacary.

Eastmond: 6 – For only his second game with the regulars, Craig did well. Very calm and collected whenever on the ball and some tidy passing.

Nasri: 5 – Too poor to be the one who is supposed to invent and orchestrate the midfield. And a very silly yellow as well.

Diaby: 5 – Another disappointing game. He is doing incredibly well in holding the ball, twisting and turning and getting the move started, but shocking in the final third.

Walcott: 6 – Excellent first half, finding the net and going inches close to score a second, but completely anonymous in the second.

Rosicky: 6,5 – Worked his socks off and was a nuisance to the Wigan defense. May not be at his best yet, but not shy to make tackles, which was nice to see.

Bendtner: 6 – Turned provider for Theo’s first goal and did his usual aerial job well. Having said that, I was incredibly disappointed with some of his first touches, shocking to say the least.

(Subs)
Eboue and van Persie: No Vote – Instead of using them to put more pressure on Wigan after the 0-2 and improve our goal average record, they were introduced in stoppage time.

Merida: No Vote – So you replace Rosicky who is playing on the left and you put in Fran Merida to leave Carlos Vela on the bench? Nice move, Wenger, nice move.
