Only days ago, Arsenal were dreaming of winning the English Premiership. Today, they need to look behind their back and make sure to finish in the Top Four.
Having wasted a two goal lead for the second time this season, the Gunners will end this season without any silverware, the fifth straight year with nothing to show for. Speaking after the game, manager Arsene Wenger believes lack of concentration was the reason for the defeat.
The Frenchman explained that you simply cannot relax for a minute when facing a team which has nothing to lose. His young Arsenal squad did that, and were punished. Asked about the teams who could catch the Gunners, Wenger admitted that it is a possibility, reason why they need to win at least one of their remaining games.
He said:
I believe that we were not focused and were not disciplined and we got caught. We were a bit unlucky as well but overall, in football you have to keep focused for 90 minutes or you risk or a bit much, especially against a team who has nothing to lose and fights not to go down. They will not give up and in the end we were punished.
I haven’t spoken to [the players] about [believing the game was won] but at top-level competition you have to be focused for 90 minutes or you can lose games. [Now] Spurs can catch us, Manchester City can catch us. We have to win at least one game.
