[Video] Carlos Vela’s right-footed goal for Mexico against Italy

Submitted by Renzo on June 3, 2010 – 21:15 24 Comments

Arsenal striker Carlos Vela produced a brilliant personal display to help his National side secure an important two goal to one win over reigning World Cup Champions, Italy.

Contrary to the game against England at Wembley, the 21-year old took full advantage of an early chance to score with his less favourite foot, the right, in the 17th minute of the game. The Mexican kept on improving and Italy’s midfielders and defenders could only stop him with some very nasty challenges.

Javier Aguirre’s side made sure not to give any breathing space to Marcello Lippi’s men and deserved to score in more than one occassion though the second only came in the 84th minute when Alberto Medina timed his run to perfection and blasted it past Gianluigi Buffon.

Italy’s consolation came in the 90th minute thanks to Leonardo Bonucci, who was last month linked with a possible move to Arsenal.

Mexico were drawn in Group A together with France, Uruguay and local favourites South Africa and will kick off the competition next week on June 11th.

  • M.Reyes says:

Beautiful Game by Mexico, About time Vela Scored!

  • Adrian says:

Carlitos had a great overall game. I guess that’s what happens when they let him play more than 10min a game.

  • Chris says:

    Yes, I watched it.

The whole Mexican team was a joy to watch but I am still worried about the gaps at the back.

And I thought Guillermo Ochoa is the regular keeper?

    • Adrian says:

That’s what everyone thinks, including myself. Perez had his time but its time for Ochoa to shine, Aguirre said that the keeper that started today wasn’t necessarily going to start against South Africa.

    • David says:

Didn’t we all? I guess Aguirre pulled out a “Bunny” out of his hat.

That was a horrible joke. Great game by Mexico. Happy Vela finally scored.

      • M.Reyes says:

        Ochoa was/is?

But see this is what happened Chris

They told the Mexican Coach the following “hey bring a lucky rabbit foot to win the world cup”

to which he replied “hell, i’ll take the whole rabbit instead”

        hahahahaha :) !

in case you dont get it, Perez is nickenamed “el conejo” aka the Rabbit!

  • A92 says:

Vela always seems to play better for Mexico than for Arsenal…

I hope he has a good 2010-11 season though

    • Davi says:

He plays better for mexico because they actually give him a chance. He was the same for us in the carling cup. Lets see what he’s like for arsenal when he has a few games in a row for longer than 10 minutes at a time.
I know it was just the carling cup but to the best of my recollection, no young reserve/fringe player has never played as well over a number of games as carlos did last season. He scored 5 in 7 and played brilliantly in almost every one of those games. No one has ever done that before, so I think he deserved a bit more than the tiny role he was given this season; he deserved a real chance. He’s not the finished article but he never had the chance to show what he could do and/or improve this season. It was very disappointing.

    • Scott (USA) says:

The difference is that he plays for Mexico and for Arsenal he has yet to get a run in the team. I think he would be fine if he got some time on the field. He is quite a talent. Why else would Wenger get him? Go Gunners! This game says more about Italy than Mexico.

  • zeldaprimed says:

    Wenger should Sign Dos Santos…

Would be wonderful to snatch a great talent from under all the Spuds noses…

    • M.Reyes says:

Dos Santos and Vela in Arsenal would be a dream come true muahahaha

      • Mr.T says:

Vela and Gio have an amazing connection on the field. They understand each others move to perfection. That pass today was superb.
I wish arsenal would sign Gio. Since he is used to the type of play arsenal plays.
But I think if Vela has a good WC he will more than likely return to Spain. When he was playing with Osasuna he was amazing. I still remember that game agains real madrid and how he made Sergio Ramos look like a fool with his skills.

        • Nando says:

Dos Santos would be a huge upgrade over Theo on the right. lol Too bad, it won’t happen since Wenger has too much invested in Theo, so he won’t get rid of him even though he under performs consistently.

Good goal for Vela and at the right time ahead of game one of the WC. He finds himself in good scoring positions almost every game so he needed to get some confidence in front of goal.

  • Chris says:

Oh and by the way, Carlos won a clear penalty but the ref waved play on.

  • georgie_archbld says:

Yes… it was difficult to whistle the clear penalty shot against Carlos Vela, with Italy been the World Champions, and if it the matcht wouldhave rated by ball possecion, beautiful game and goal opprtunities, it would have been a catastrophic 5 or 6 against Italy.
Yes, and I would really be happy if Giovani has a chance to be in Arsenal, and also if AW would have noticed that it is different to give a player 8 or 10 minutes ‘once upon a time’, instead of given him 2 starting line-ups in a row.

  • Pat says:

Vela has started games in the prem and played pretty ordinary, don’t overprotect the boy. I put it down to being over-whelmed. Nonetheless, he should pull his socks up when he gets a crack in the main team, and play like he did with the C.C squad, what with his competition now being the likes of AA23, Robin, Dudu, Theo, Nasri, even Chamakh now! Pretty big list that, but he can better most of those IMO, bar RvP & possibly Arshy.

Besides, he was injured last season when his chance came up, not to mention missing his passport.

    • georgie_archbld says:

‘Facts are Facts’, my dear friend. Minutes are Minutes, Playing opportunities are Playing opportunities.
Myself and of course Vela, would like the better for Arsenal in the future, no matter who plays, but he would have to be given equal chances.
Vela, was not going to be playing against Barcelona, with his passport or with a diplomatic visa… this matter and the unfortunate lost, were used just to make Arsenal fans go against him.

    • Hawk says:

He started one game in the Premiership all season…

  • jdilla says:

This next season will be make or break for vela at Arsenal. if he doesnt get playing time then he WILL leave, that is what happened with Merida… But unlike Fran i think Wenger knows Vela’s true potential and is part of his “vision” but he NEEDS game time to blossom…. He needs a string of games to get into his stride, so he either needs to be loaned out or see the field more. BUt the problem lies with wat system wenger will use, i think that we should utilize a 4-1-3-2, We lack true wingers, yes arsh, nasri, rosick has fallen off, vela and co are good sit ins, but look at Walcott for christs sake….Arsh is a #10 at heart, Nasri a CAM, Vela a striker. By using two strikers instead of one plus 2 wingers we would be better utilizing our players.. RVP/Vela/Arsh and then Chamkah/bendt/edurado. We played most of our players out of their natural postions and it worked, but next season we will have enough players that we do not need to compensate. Not saying that the 4-3-3 did not work, all im sayin is that w/ all of these strikers (and my desire to see vela one day become our go-to guy) We should use a system of play that can better utilize our extremely talented GUNNERS SQUAD!!!!

  • Isaac says:

Oh this is exactly what i was waiting for, Vela gets to display his fantastic (and underapreciated by Arsenal) football, now hes going to get true international attention and i promise he will be SNATCHED from Arsenal.. And still i sometimes read that some Arsenal fans think that “hes not ready” PLEASE!!..
