Arsene Wenger: We will soon sign a player on the defensive front

Arsene Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has again confirmed he will soon make a new signing although he opted not to reveal the name of the player.

With the Gunners losing Swiss International Philippe Senderos who could soon be joined by William Gallas and Sol Campbell in leaving the club, the Frenchman revealed that at least one player will be brought in to reinforce the defensive department of his squad.

Earlier this week, Wenger explained how the North London Club made an approach for Laurent Koscielny, also saying how negotiations between the two clubs are ongoing. However, the Frenchman added that an announcement about any possible new signings will only be made when the deal is officially finalised.

Arsenal’s only signing ahead of the new season so far has been Marouane Chamakh who signed from Bordeaux although last month Wenger was quoted as saying that one or two more signings will be done with reports suggesting that a new goalkeeper is what Wenger wants to add to his squad.

On his transfer strategy, the Gunners manager said:

Nothing has been done yet but I expect something will be done quite soon on that front, on the defensive front. We will sign a player soon.

But we do not want to come out with names before we announce it.

Keep faith in what has always worked well for us and that is to keep it secret as much as we can.

So we’re sposd 2 get excited over Kolscieny now? Cmon ARSENE. Get us Chryginsky if you have balls.

  • Alric says:

Fine so we get Kolscieny, but what does that leave us with? Verm, Kolscieny, Djourou, Campbell (maybe), Nordveidt, Bartley, Cruise and Song (makshift). The first 2 are the starters, with Djourou as the 3rd defender. Campbell can hardly make it 2 games in a row, so what happens if we lose either one of this 3 due to injury throughout the season? We’re supposed to rely on kids again in Nord and Bartley to challenge for the CL, EPL and FA and Carling? If thats the case, we can all forget next season as well and maybe let Fab go instead coz its just pathethic

  • Andy frm NIG says:

Wenger aways made promise and nt fufil so i wil nt b suprise if he faild 2 sign any player.

  • John Muhindo says:

Andy, i think this time he will sign because the changes his squad is much and there`s pressure to win trophies at Emirates.

  • yuri says:

well… i believe this weird-named french guy will turn out to be a massive signing (in matters like this i trust arsene)…the point is that we need another CB (must sign the danish Kjaer) and a GK.
But what truely pisses me of is that we really missed the chance in january 2009 to sign one THE MOST prommising defenders in europe called thiago silva (yes the AC milan player) and last summer inter milan bought a monster called lucio for only 8-9m euros…

  • Olurombi Qudus,Lagos Nigeria says:

Pls leave Wenger with his policy and let expect something gud frm him ratherthan critises him Up gunners

  • Frank says:

Wenger is not a man of his words, what stops him frm signing 2 or 3 gud defenders since 3 r leaving, atleast add 1 to supprt Song den world class keeper to form no-go-area.Striker is optional since W.Silva wl join by january.I dnt tink he listens 2people,he shld has changed by nw.Andy is rite

  • jawid says:

i think all we need is a new keeper.(a gud keeper) other than that hopefully we will do gud next season.

  • durban_gun says:

EVEN ON PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER IT IS HARDER TO COMPETE AS ARSENAL WHEN VERSING CHESLEA MAN U BARCA ETC WITHOUT SIGNING A FEW MORE WORLD CLASS PLAYERS.. I ADDED FORLAN UPFRONT TO PARTNER VAN PERSIE WITH CANAVARO AT THE BACK AND BUFFON IN THE NETS ..NOW IM NOT SAYING HE SIGNS THESE PLAYERS BUT WAT I AM SAYING IS THAT WE LACK PLAYERS IN THESE POSITIONS OR THE PLAYERS WE HAVE IN THESE POSITIONS ARE JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH..COME ON WENGER IF KONAMIS DEVELOPERS CAN SEE THIS HALF WAY AROUND THE WORLD WAT IS UR EXCUSE AS ONE OF THE BEST MANAGERS OF THE MODERN GAME

  • ktexs says:

in me opinion arsnal buy to mica richar from m.city ,jelipe melo, gorcufffff,or ozil,

  • DeiseGooner says:

Pro Evolution – ha ha ha >Maybe you should send a game to Wenger with the before and after you have made the signings seasons played out to show him the difference :)

  • arf says:

can anyone tell me the truth of silvestre’s riddance? every time i hear the news i’ve never been assured if silvestre is actually leaving the club. i always hope that campbell is going no where and silvestre packs his bags leaving this club to any places but arsenal.someone please tell me if silvestre is out..

  • Geezer says:

@durban_gun You are a perfect example of an Armchair fan…. Why dont you play as someone else then?? Why dont you just go and support someone else if you think the teams not good enough on a video game??? Why dont you play Championship Manager and sign your own team and keep it to yourself rookie?

  • jack says:

    IN arsene we trust

  • We need a good defender and a good goalkeeper. Why can’t arsene wenger go for the player of the year in Isreal league and the outstanding goalkeeper in the ongoing world cup i.e Nigeria born keeper VINCENT ENYEAMA. I think that is the kind of goalkeeper we need in arsenal sqaud.

  • Hadley says:

The Pro Evolution Soccer comment, classic!!

  • pradha says:

Want to buy one defender, and if he’s injured want to play with the small boys again ah ???

  • gerry d says:

i play fifa 10 all the fackin’ time as either arsenal or the netherlands. does that mean i can’t dribble the opposition into the ground with nasri? or lay inch perfect passes with fab4? or strike the perfect volley with RVP. hell, make crunching tackles with song, verm, or gallas. own the wings with clichy, sagna, walcott, and even bendtner if i want to?

yeah i do all that because i’m not an idiot, if you do all that, you have to learn each mechanic in the game, if you can do that, you can win with virtually any team instead of needing to bolster your squad like chicken! if this site didn’t sensor harsh words i probably would’ve thrown a few in there.

football games are football games, sure they have basis in the realms of reality but in no way are the two combined!

my real point is though, you’re obviously not talented enough to use the means you’re given (which are quite substantial) durban_gun.

  • AlexB says:

A big Amen to those who trust in Arsene!
I have faith that le prof knows what he’s doing… he will buy couple of underrated defenders for less money than they would be worth if they were playing at a big club. Koscielny will be a Verm like signing. And Wenger will throw another defender in there for good measure, the likes of Diakhate, Taiwo, Kjear, or the classic move out of left field that no one sees coming. The two defenders will see us give up 25m potentially, leaving us another 20m to sign a gk, 20m honestly could buy a seriously good keep, but if he does go with the 3.5m rated Schwarzer we’ll still have over 15m left… With the potential signing of Joe Cole (We’re the odds on favourites to sign him) Things are looking quite good from here…
Yes there is the potential disaster of Cesc leaving, and I do believe that it is a very real possibility given the fact that Cesc hasn’t come and said “No, I’m not going anywhere” is beyond worrying. Yes he’s under contract and can’t go anywhere, but who wants a disgruntled player who doesn’t want to be there. So let’s figure that we hold out for a transfer fee of 50m (optimistic), we’ll have 65m to find a decent replacement, who we may or may not need (Joe Cole). Buy Yoann Gourcuff for 25-30m ’cause regardless of how disappointing his world cup was he is a real class player with unreal ball control, high footballing IQ, good passing, and excellent set pieces. I honestly think he’ll be better than Cesc…
After that transfer we’re still sitting with 35m in the war chest, and I figure the boss will either keep that for January for emergencies, or possibly buy a back up DM, since honestly I think Denilson’s been a bust…

  • ak47 says:

i think ur spot on alexB, there’s more than enuf money an the ball is in our court with the whole cesc saga. to be honest, and i never thought id say this, but the fact he hasnt pledged his allegiance with us. something that would have been quite an easy thing to do in both interviews, id rather gourcuff instead. both would be nice. an i hope the dm will be melo. wenger will do whats right, of that i hav no doubt. personally tho id like to see….

  • Santori says:

Personally prefer an older experienced head alongside Vermaelen, Koscielny and Djourou.

IF Sol cannot be retained, I think Wenger should get someone in his prime (25-30). Someone like Alex at Chelsea, robust, quick feet, good in the air and useful going forward (with a cannon ball of a shot) would do fine thank you. :D

  • Jason says:

Seriously, we need someone… To fill in the void left by Silvestre, Gallas, Senderos…
I don’t know why, but Senderos is quite a good player to me…
Nevermind, now he is left… 3 players need to be signed as Campbell is uncertain too.

Koscielny is likely to join us next season.
But is he good enough to start for us or just act as an sub to feature in cup games?
I would rather see Kjaer to join us… 12-14m isnt that expensive too…
Pape Diakhte, a name that heavily linked to Arsenal before this…
But I don’t know how good can he fit in…

If these 3 players joined us, I dont see any weak position on us anymore…
Oh ya, I forgot the position between the pole….
Sign someone ONLY when we have EXTRA after getting at least 2 defenders…
We need CB more than a better GK…
Schwarzer is heavily linked with Arsenal too…
Let see how it comes out as the result then…. =)

  • Cello says:

Looks like the Gunners have signed French centre-back Laurent Koscielny from Lorient for £8.5million.

Hope Koscielny was on the “NOT RECOMMENDED” list by our super scout TONY ADAMS.

    LOL.
