Andrey Arshavin on his dream goal and finger to lips celebration

Written by Renzo on September 1, 2010 – 4:30

Arsenal Interactive - Player RatingsAndrey Arshavin

Arsenal midfielder Andrey Arshavin is by far one of the most introvert characters of the English Premiership and speaking to Arsenal TV Online he revealed how self-believe helped him become a top class player.

Asked about his childhood influence, the 29-year old explained how there was nobody who motivated him to become what he is today, adding how former Barcelona strikers Hristo Stoichkov and Romario were players he loved to watch but not really an icon or a motivation in his footballing career.

On settling down off the pitch, the Russian explained that it was initially frustrating as London was a complete different world and how it was not easy on the pitch as well as expectations were very high and because football in the Premier League is very quick.

Arshavin concluded by explaining how he started to celebrate by putting his finger on his lips in 2005 when his then-club Zenit played against AEK Athens in the Europe League and he scored an 89th minute winner. On his dream goal, the Russian said how it’s chipping the keeper from the middle of the field as it would be repeating what other great players have done in the past.

He said:

I did not have a player as icon. I loved Hristo Stoichkov and Romario but not really a motivation.

[Moving to London] was frustrating, everything was new, completely different. I was nervous before my first game, I knew I had to perform straight away considering all that was said before my signing. It was difficult to get used to the Premier League as everything is quicker and you must be quicker in the decision-taking.

[My celebration] started when we were in Greece and played AEK. In stoppage time we beat them one zero and it came natural to do it as we were playing away from home.

[My dream goal] would be to chip the keeper. I would like to be somewhere in the middle of the pitch with the goalkeeper out enough to chip him. I saw a lot of goals like that from good players and I would like to repeat that as well.
