Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen was pretty much honest in his assessment of last season as he believes it’s time for the Gunners to win trophies.
Speaking to Arsenal TV Online about not winning anything during the last campaign, the Belgian International said how Arsenal showed good things but were not good enough to end their silverware crisis, reason why winning trophies is now amongst the objectives of the Club.
On his new partner at the back Laurent Koscielny, Vermaelen added how he impressed him from day one as he is a good player and a valuable asset for the squad. The Belgian said how the defender showed good things in the Emirates Cup against Celtic and AC Milan and was very strong in the first game of the season against Liverpool.
On Sebastien Squillaci, Arsenal’s last summer signing of the transfer window, the 24-year old said he is happy he signed and that it was very important to bring an experienced player as of course he has the right experience to take the right decisions.
Vermaelen concluded by joking on the “Verminator” nickname which was assigned to him since joining the English Premiership, saying how it’s not a bad name, a funny one and how people in England are good to find names for players.
Ahead of this season, he said:
We have ambition this year because last year we didn’t do well, we did some good things but at the end we didn’t have any trophies and that is what we are now going to fight for.
[Laurent Koscielny] impressed me a lot. He’s a good player, tight in marking, a good passer, good football player. He did really well [against Milan and Celtic] and later against Liverpool, he’s good for us and it’ll be a good partnership.
I am happy Squillaci is coming because he’s an experienced player. The boss said to me once, ‘If you play as a centre half, it’s all about making decisions’ and that’s good to have experience as you can make better decisions. Someone who is 30 has a lot of experience and will make better decisions than somebody who is 22.
[Verminator] is a nice name, in England they are good in finding names, if you look at the papers they getting new names, it’s funny, not a bad name.
