Gael Clichy: Ending our trophyless run has become an obsession

Arsenal left-back Gael Clichy confessed winning a trophy has becoming an obsession for the Gunners as they want to end their trophy drought.
Speaking to the Guardian, the Frenchman said how when you play for such an ambitious club like Arsenal you automatically have the needed winning mentality with the 25-year old adding how if he didn’t have a winning mentality in his game he would be playing for a smaller team in a different country.
Going back to the defeat against Chelsea, Clichy explained how injuries shouldn’t be an excuse anymore but how it’s also true that it is very difficult to win such games without key players such as Robin van Persie and Cesc Fabregas.
Arsenal travel to Manchester today to face Roberto Mancini’s side knowing that a defeat would see them go eight points behind Chelsea and outside the Top Four.
On the trophyless run, Clichy said:
It has become an obsession.
When you play for a club like Arsenal, you don’t lack the mentality. You are a winner. To be at the top level, whether it’s NBA, NFL or whatever, you are a winner.
If we play for Arsenal instead of another club in another country with smaller teams, it’s because we have the winning mentality.
After, it is other things that make the difference.
You don’t want to hide behind this but come on. At Chelsea, we missed (Robin) Van Persie, (Cesc) Fabregas, (Theo) Walcott, who was on fire, and (Thomas) Vermaelen.
Take off (Didier) Drogba, (Frank) Lampard, (Florent) Malouda and (John) Terry from Chelsea and it’s a different story.
The fact is we’ve been without some massive players and it’s quite difficult to cope.
Football is sometimes not just as simple as ‘you are the best team so you are going to win’.
