Former Arsenal legend Bob Wilson revealed the Gunners made a big-money offer during the summer to sign a new goalkeeper.
Speaking to BBC Five Live, the 69-year old is quoted as saying how a big offer was made by Arsenal for what he considers one of the most consistent goalkeeper in the Premier League. Reports suggest Pepe Reina is the goalkeeper in question with Wilson adding how he plays for a club with “a great history and tradition”.
After a long summer of speculation, the Gunners started with Manuel Almunia in goal but after suffering an elbow injury, Poland’s Lukasz Fabianski took over and is set to continue even after the return of the Spaniard.
Last week, manager Arsene Wenger was full of praise for both Fabianski and Wojciech Szczesny as he explained how all his goalkeepers are top class. Italian Vito Mannone – meanwhile – was loaned out to Hull City until January 2011.
On a summer move for a goalkeeper, Wilson said:
I was pushing a certain individual and Arsene (Wenger) went in over the summer and offered amazing money for who I consider to be to most consistent goalkeeper in the Premier League. It was absolutely not [Mark] Schwarzer. The person involved is at a club that under normal circumstances would be challenging Arsenal. One of the clubs with a great history and tradition.
