Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger revealed he was not surprised to see 37-year old Robert Pires return to English football with Aston Villa as he is one who can help any team in the Premier League.
Speaking on Thursday at lunchtime, the Frenchman explained how the former Arsenal midfielder was very sharp when training with the Gunners earlier during the season and how he understands why Gerard Houllier wanted him in the squad.
Asked about what he will tell his ex-player, Wenger said how he will be happy to see him and joked how he will warn him to be quiet during the game.
On striker Robin van Persie, the Arsenal boss said that he had a good test on Thursday morning and could join the squad for the away game at Villa Park, concluding by saying how he hopes to have the Dutchman fit and available for the next couple of months.
Ahead of the Villa game, Wenger said:
No [I am not surprised at his move] because I saw what he has been doing in training. I am not surprised that Gerard Houllier thought about him.
He is the type of player who can help any team in the Premier League. Just at that age it is important you use him well at the right moment.
[On Saturday I will tell him] I am happy to see you and be quiet today!
Robin van Persie had a good test this morning and he looks like he has a chance to be in the squad for Saturday.
Robin had an ankle problem that has been repeated on the other leg that he had before last year but if he comes well through today’s session we should be ok.
Let’s hope he can play for us in the next two-three months.
