Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes the Gunners should not be envious of Chelsea as the two teams get ready to face each other on Monday.
Speaking ahead of the big game, the Frenchman understands Arsenal’s lack of silverware in the last five years is a problem although he believes his players have enough quality to prove themselves. Wenger explained how the mentality ahead of big games should not change as it’s already fantastic and very strong with the manager adding how the players are hungry and ready for success.
Asked if the Gunners can beat Chelsea at the Emirates, the Arsenal boss said that they can but also how it is important to believe in themselves rather than thinking about whether they can beat the Blues or not.
Arsenal are currently second in the table on 32 points with Carlo Ancelotti’s men fourth on 31 points but with a game in hand as compared to third-placed Manchester City.
Ahead of the game, Wenger said:
Let’s say we look at the number of points [Chelsea] have and the number of points we have. We have nothing to envy.
It is just for us to get over that hurdle. As long as a team has not won, they wonder ‘can we win?’ It is a mental thing because the quality of the squad is there. We are still young but not so much now.
I do not need to change the Arsenal mentality because the Arsenal mentality is fantastic and very strong.
This team is hungry and the players want success. It is more about belief and belief comes by focusing on playing together and the way we want to play rather than thinking can we beat Chelsea or not.
We can beat Chelsea but the best way to beat them is to focus on what we want to achieve and how we want to achieve it.
