Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed what was published in Polish media earlier this week that goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski is out for the rest of the season.
Speaking on Thursday, the Frenchman confirmed that the 25-year old will undergo surgery to fix a shoulder problem which he suffered during the warm-up of the Manchester City game. On who will take over in goal, Wenger explained Wojciech Szczesny and Manuel Almunia will be fighting for a regular place with the youngster in pole position for the role.
Earlier this week, the Arsenal boss was full of praise for Japanese forward Ryo Miyaichi who was loaned out Feyenoord during the January transfer window with Wenger explaining that he was impressed with the movement and quality of the 18-year old.
Miyaichi was officially announced as an Arsenal player in December after he signed a 5-year contract and in an interview given to Kyodo News he explained how he possesses the right qualities to penetrate defenses in the English Premier League.
On the two players, Wenger said:
We had bad news for Lukasz Fabianski because he need surgery on his shoulder. He has decided after having seen a few specialists that he will have surgery in Germany. It means his season is over.
The competition for the places at the moment will be between Wojciech and Almunia. Wojciech will play the next game.
[Miyaichi] impresses us and he impresses me with the quality of his movement, the quality of his game and, you will not be surprised, his attitude. [He has] typical dedication, dedication to his job as usually Japanese people are and he shows us that in training.
