With Lukasz Fabianski set to spend the rest of the season on the sidelines, Wojciech Szczesny is now Arsenal’s number and speaking to Arsenal TV Online he admitted that it does feel good.
The Polish International confessed he recently worked very hard to win a place in Arsene Wenger’s starting eleven and hard work and persistence were eventually rewarded as he added how his objective is to do well in every single game, regardless if it’s for Brentford, Arsenal or Poland.
Asked about the bizarre episode which led to Lukasz Fabianski’s injury, the 20-year old explained how he was warming up with his friend and fellow goalkeeper with Fabianski injuring himself in his attempt to block one of his shots with the youngster confessing how he felt a “little bit” responsible for the injury.
On what it means to compete for a regular place with a friend and compatriot, Szczesny concluded by saying how it’s a weird feeling but how ultimately their friendship is not affected by the healthy competition.
On securing a regular place and his friend, he said:
[Arsene Wenger saying I'm the number one] feels very good. I’ve been working hard recently to get my place in the team and it feels very good to get a regular run in the team. I don’t mind keeping it for a little bit longer, I just try to do my best every game and leave the decisions to the manager.
I indirectly [injured Lukasz Fabianski] but I didn’t really injure me [because] he could have let the shot in. But yes, I did take a shot on goal and he injured himself making the save to my shot. So I’m a little bit responsible for it but I don’t think he blames me for it.
[Competing with each other] feels weird if I’m honest because we are good friends, talk to each other but when it comes to football we have a very good competition, I don’t feel sorry for him if I have to take his spot and he doesn’t feel sorry for me if I’m on the bench. It’s weird but it doesn’t affect our friendship.
