Nigel Winterburn: Why getting the first trophy is so important for Arsenal

Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn believes this could be the year in which the Gunners will end their silverware crisis.
Speaking to Arsenal TV Online, the Englishman explained how it would be great if the Gunners could bring silverware to the Emirates as he added how getting the first trophy is mighty important for the players as that will make them realise how much they want to win a second one which according to the 47-year old should then come pretty quickly.
Asked about the crazy January transfer window, the former left-back confessed he is not happy with the ridiculous amount of money spent in the modern game with “instant success” the reason why Arsenal have been under so much pressure in recent years.
Winterburn concluded by saying that five years without a trophy is not a long time but considering the rich history of Arsenal Football Club it is maybe understandable that some want the crisis to end as soon as possible.
On this season, he said:
I hope [this will be Arsenal's year]. We keep saying that for a long, long time now, it would be great if they could win something at the Emirates and give it it’s first bit of history, if you like.
This season Arsenal are doing really well, still in Cup competitions, chasing hard against Manchester United, it’s a big season I think for this team because I’ve said on many occasions, just to get that first trophy as a player makes you realise how much you want to win something even more and I think once they get the first trophy the second one will come pretty quickly.
The world is changing, there’s a huge amount of money in football at this moment in time and the amount of money being spent in my eyes is ridiculous, it’s too much for a player but it’s been driven by market forces.
I think in the world that we are at the moment people want instant success and they don’t want to wait for it and I think that’s why Arsenal Football Club and Arsene Wenger and the team have come under pressure because people are saying five years is too long to wait for a trophy. It’s not that long really but in terms of where Arsenal have been in recent history and where they are now people don’t want to wait too long.
