After managing only a goalless draw against Steve Bruce’s Sunderland, Arsenal should now shift their focus to next week’s Champions League game against Barcelona, in Spain.
Ahead of the game, manager Arsene Wenger explained it was good to see Wojciech Szczesny and Laurent Koscielny doing well after the disaster which cost them the League Cup Final against Birmingham as he confirmed that strikers Theo Walcott and Robin van Persie will not feature against the Catalans with midfielder Cesc Fabregas having a chance to make the starting line-up.
Asked about the injury suffered by Jack Wilshere against the Black Cats, the Arsenal boss revealed the 19-year old suffered an ankle problem and that he will be assessed on Sunday morning to determine if he will also miss the game.
The Gunners produced an unforgettable win over the Spanish Liga leaders at the Emirates with Robin van Persie and Andrey Arshavin responding to David Villa’s opener when the two sides faced each other in London.
Ahead of the return leg, Wenger said:
[Wojciech Szczesny] and [Laurent Koscielny] had a good performance. Defensively we were strong and good. No [on Walcott to face Barcelona]. No Van Persie [for Barcelona]. Fabregas has a chance [for Barcelona].
[Jack Wilshere] has an ankle problem but we will see how he responds to treatment tomorrow. He’ll be out of training maybe one or two days. Monday [he will] maybe be back. We’ll see.
