Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere was very happy with the character showed by the Gunners on Saturday after they managed to get a draw against West Bromwich Albion.
Roy Hodgson’s side took full advantage of defensive mistakes by the Gunners to take a two-goal lead but were denied a memorable win after Arsenal produced a fantastic comeback with two goals in eight minutes, comeback started by Andrey Arshavin and concluded by Robin van Persie.
Speaking to Arsenal TV Online after the game, the 19-year old admitted the players were disappointed when the final whistle blew but how it’s important to highlight the way the comeback was achieved as it shows the fighting spirit of the side.
Asked what was said in the dressing room, the Englishman said that manager Arsene Wenger told the players that they showed great character and were unlucky not to win the game as we now head into the International break with the Premier League back on April 2 with the Gunners hosting Blackburn at the Emirates.
After the 2-2 draw, Wilshere said:
At the end we showed good character in the second half, we wanted to come out and get a goal but unfortunately they scored and we showed character to come back to two all, disappointed we didn’t win but we got a point and that’s good that we didn’t lose.
[The conceded goals] were sloppy, we started sloppy, they went one up early and then we came out in the second half a bit sloppy but I mean we showed great character to come back, we now have to push on, we got nine games left, we have to go for it.
At the end of the day we have to beat [Manchester United] there, that’s the biggest game we have to look forward to. We are still second and in the dressing room we still believe we can win it.
[After the game], the boss told us that we showed great character, that we were unlucky as we could have nicked it in. Obviously there is a bit of disappointment but at least we didn’t lose and we have to look forward after the International break.
