Nigel Winterburn: Again, it seems the players haven’t delivered for Arsene Wenger

Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn believes manager Arsene Wenger was again let down by his players after last week’s goalless draw against Blackburn.

Writing on his weekly Islington Gazette column, the 47-year explained that it was a frustrating afternoon in which the players failed to repay the manager for all the belief he invested in them. On the title race, the Englishman was full of praise for Manchester United as he called them “almost the exact opposite of Arsenal”, referring to their inner belief to win important games.

On the Blackburn game, he said:

It is frustrating for everybody connected with the club, and especially for Arsene himself. He has invested a lot of belief in this group of players and has backed them to the hilt for the last two seasons when everybody has been clamouring for him to buy big-name players.

At times their football over the past two seasons has been superb – and we need to remember that they are second and not second from bottom – but once again it seems those players just haven’t delivered for him.

I just wonder if he is now asking the same questions of the players that everybody else is. They didn’t look like a side who believed they could score on Saturday, and that is very worrying.

Of course they have not become a bad side overnight, but for the last six weeks they have been very, very average and really need to somehow find a way to win a game to get some confidence back.

Unfortunately, Manchester United showed on Saturday just why they have won so many trophies and are almost the exact opposite of Arsenal at this stage of the season.

This is a very workmanlike United team, nowhere near as good as some of Sir Alex Ferguson’s other sides, but they have that inner belief that they can win games whatever the situation. It is the all-important missing ingredient for Arsenal.

    SPOT ON!!

  • Mars says:

Arsene is a kindly manager, so someone including me may question if he can handle his young players, specially in current respect personality’s time. Some players had much chances to show their abilities, but failed to convince the fans by their performance on the ground this season. They should be swept out from Arsenal. But Arsene didn’t and won’t do that. Maybe he wants to stick on them till they are totally grown up and shine finnaly, then Arsene can show his ability to seek potential of his young players to the world again, proudly, but what the price is the performance of the team over these years.

  • The BearMan says:

Stop blaming the players, they gave all they got and playing way above their own abilities. We expected them to do the impossible, which was to sustain that throughout an entire season. That is the reason you bring in adequate reinforcements!

Consider this: week by week, Arsenal send out a team to face giants. When our team is full of running they can do battle with anyone. When they are returning from injury it proves a mountain of a task.

Consider Barca: the speed in which they move the ball. That is how to demolish a team that has players that are physically stronger than yours. Alternately you have a few giants and powerhouses of your own!

    • kim says:

We are so close, and still wenger refuses to invest in a

      - centerback (a’la vidic)
      - goalscorer (whos not injured every two games)

  • Mars says:

What a young player need is not only trust, but also criticism to make them grow up. Look the growth line of Denilson or Diaby these years, it may show that Arsene can give the former, but lack of the latter. Without the criticism and enough professional, current young players will grow much more slowly then the players such as Theirry Henry or Patrick Vieira did.

    • kim says:

Who are the young players gonna look unto, we have no leaders, everybody is to young…

I remember when we played tottenham, and they came together before kick off and made a circle, with gallas and everybody shouting about to give 100%

did you noticed how scared out squad looked, they just stood there and watched, someone should had collected the arseanl squad and done the same thing….and we lost that game

      • eve says:

we have two great leaders for the squad to look up to, 1 is our brilliant captain cesc, the other is our fantastic manager, oh and i remember last season against stoke when we lost aaron, who pulled the team together then to beat stoke, and this season against chelsea, man city, barca etc, dont say we dont have a leader, we have one that gives 110% as captain of our club.

  • Wrightydenhenry says:

Here is a proper comment from a player who understands football unlike
Merson is still bitter and twisted about Wenger selling him and a headline seeker. Since Newcastle away we have lost something. After one of the best starts in a game we gave it away! The last 3 drawswhich have cost us have been from lack of scoring at West Brom had over 20 mins to score a winner like Man U at west ham. Arsene will always defend his players and deflect any criticism and he needs a top no.2 I’m disappointed too but let’s have the inquest when we have no chance. Right now the team needs our maximum support anyone Bolton away!!

  • kim says:

The squad is just not good enough, when are people gonna realise this??

We won nothing for 6 years and Still Wenger says EXAXTLY the same things after every game,

    - The team is young
    - we showed good character
    - We showed good togetherness
    - the pitch was bad
    - the referee was bad
    - we were not sharp enough
    - we showed good spirit
    - i felt we controlled the game
    - I feel this team will deliver

well, Why not admit that this team isnt good enough, why just dont do it??

    WHY??

    • eve says:

our team is good enough, we’ve proved it many times, its just they are not consistant, other teams in the pl suffer with this as well, no team is perfect, on our day when we go out on the pitch determined, we win.

  • kim says:

Who are the young players gonna look unto, we have no leaders, everybody is to young…we have no Terry, gerrard, Vidic,

I remember when we played tottenham, and they came together before kick off and made a circle, with gallas and everybody shouting about to give 100% in the match, they often do this

did you noticed how scared out squad looked, they just stood there and watched and no one reacted or did anything, by that point I KNEW WE WOULD LOOSE TH_E GAME,

IT has so much to do with these small factors,

someone should had collected the Arseanal squad and done the same thing….but no, just stood there and watched for an half minut…..

and guess what, and we lost that game
