Arsene Wenger on Lehmann’s performance and not having goalkeepers on the bench

Arsenal Interactive - Player RatingsArsene Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger confessed he was not worried when Jens Lehmann was called into action to replace injured Manuel Almunia against Blackpool.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, the Frenchman explained that the former Germany International is a good goalkeeper who was coming in to replace another good goalkeeper. The Arsenal boss added that his only concern was that he had no keeper on the bench and how therefore a player would have been forced to replace the 41-year old in case of problems.

Asked about how the veteran performed, Wenger replied with a positive reply, saying that he did well, was spot on with his decision-making and was commanding when set-pieces had to be defended.

And on the challenge on DJ Campbell for which the goalkeeper could have easily seen red, the Frenchman concluded by saying that he took the ball and how the referee would have probably booked him had he decided to give the home side the penalty for the challenge.

On his goalkeeper, Wenger said:

I was not concerned [when Jens Lehmann was called to play] because I replaced a good goalkeeper with a good goalkeeper. The only concern was not having a goalkeeper on the bench anymore.

If something had happened to Jens, because he had not played for a long time, we would have had a problem.

He did well. His decision-making was spot on. In fairness, he didn’t have a lot to do because we controlled the game quite well. He is commanding and his authority helped us on set-pieces.

[The challenge on DJ Campbell?] Yes. That was the important split-second of the game. I felt Jens played the ball, even if [the referee] gives a penalty he can give a yellow card because he tried to intercept the ball.

Ah. So you wanted him to say he replaced a horrible keeper with an okay-keeper?

Grow up. These are press-interviews, not life confessions. There’s a reason Almunia is our third choice keeper.

The only reason he has had the chance to play is because Chezney and Fabianski are out injured.

  • Rosdan says:

Or maybe he also did something Ive been secretly waiting for, giving Diaby, Denilson and Squillaci a royal rumble in the dressing room

    Hahahaha, cant stop laughing

  • WOLF says:

i like sczensy but with lehmann i feel we have something similar to man united, though i think van der sar is STILL a top class keeper. we have someone at the back who is proven at doing 2 things. 1- has been there and won things, 2- knows how to a defence his bitch, in a good way

  • Jephter itagbo says:

I totally behind you on this one. He has to go.

  • abbas gode! says:

hahahahahahaha i would say RvP is more serious than almunia inthe goal keeping so why not he select pooh pooh wenger

  • Stillagooner says:

I don’t know what everyone has against Squidgy and Diaby. Squillaci has proven in the past few games that Djorou has been out that he is a much better and cleaner defender than Koscielny…just look at the reckless challenges that Koscielny makes and I can count three times Squidgy has cleared the ball off the line in the past 3 games. Diaby is a great player when he can get his head right and Arsene only needs to work on that. I honestly think the only player that needs to leave at the end of the season is Denilson.

    • PaulK says:

Great comment! I agree that only Denilson is sub-par. Diaby played great, despite the yellow card. Squidgy was solid also. Eboue, another player many supporters wanted fired, played well.

I love this team, the manager and our philosophy. Sometimes we’re flat, but what team isnt? We’re on a long unbeaten streak now. I’m proud to be a gunner and very confident in our future.

    • Hunter says:

I agree on Squilacci. Koscielny is clueless and should have given away at least 1 pen yesterday and possibly 2. He is always out of position and a complete liability because of his rash decision making. The only solid game he has had with us was the first leg against Barca. Other than that he has been the reason for almost every goal we have given away. He causes the other defenders to have problem because of his terrible positioning and i was glad to see Lehman in his ear yesterday.

      • phelan says:

What games have you been watching? Dodgy moment aside (who doesn’t have them, especially in their FIRST YEAR IN THE LEAGUE), Kos is growing remarkably into the role. He’s one of the best tacklers we have, kind of like Rosicky before all of his injuries, he somehow nabs the ball from strange angles. He’ll learn.

        • Chris says:

Phelan, these dodgy moments are the difference when at the end of the season one ends with trophies and the other doesn’t. The three “penalty” tackles made by Koscielny yesterday are not the first three he made this season, way too many times he goes for the ball without thinking about the consequences.

        • Hunter says:

That’s the problem. We don’t need a 25 year old learning on the job. We need someone there who knows how to play without losing his concentration or making rash challenges. He cost us points too many times this season and I have no patience for it. We spent 10 million on him and a 10 million pound defender needs to play like one. Unfortunately we got an amateur that has only ever played 1 season of top flight football and it shows.

If we are just going to play someone who is learning on the job then we should never have bought him and stuck with Ignasi. He is at least as good if not better and doesn’t continuously hack people. We either need to go with the kids or bring in established players in key positions, not bring in amateurs. Arsene is always going on about not bringing people in because it will damage the kids coming up, etc. This is the perfect example of holding a good young player out of the lineup for a crappy senior player. If I was waiting in the wings behind him I would be reconsidering my future. I fully expect Johan to leave if he isn’t the first choice CB when Vermaelen comes back because he is a much better defender.

    • toni says:

      honestly? what of almunia?

  • RvP10 says:

We cant alays blame our defence- the way we play – we always have to score more goals then the opositon.. thats the only way.. keeping a clean sheet is something that we are not known for and hard for us to do it.

Diby played very well… and so did squid..

RvP could hacve had a hatrick – Nasri played good but nothing like special apart from that run when he hit the post.

should have rested Arshavin – he will be lethal against liverpool.. loves these big games..

Clichy – man this is really good BUT wt the heck he was doing – whne he gt caught and they cud have equalised.. Lehmann did well… is he 41? really…

    • Stillagooner says:

I agree. Jens brought a certain level of calmness in that defence whilst Almunia imo inspires absolute panic. A few games ago, we probably would have crumbled if a side came back at us like Blackpool did.

  • Unbeaten.49 says:

In that hypothetical case, who had replace Jens? What do you think, because I have no clue .. ;)
