Arsenal legend Bob Wilson: Why Wojciech Szczesny is the future in goal

Written by Renzo on April 13, 2011 – 4:30

Arsenal Interactive - Player RatingsWojciech Szczesny

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Bob Wilson believes Wojciech Szczesny has what it takes to be the Club’s goalkeeper for many years to come.

Speaking to Arsenal TV Online, the former Scotland international explained that contrary to last summer, fans will most likely not want a new goalkeeper during the summer transfer window as the 20-year demonstrated during this campaign that he is a solid goalkeeper who is as good as Manchester City’s Joe Hart.

Wilson added that Szczesny possesses the right confidence in himself, in his goalkeeping ability and is the right player to defend the goal of an important and ambitious Club like Arsenal.

The 69-year old concluded by saying that the job of a goalkeeper is never easy as one mistake in the last part of the game could easily cancel a phenomenal performance and that is why it is important to have the right confidence that the 20-year old does indeed possess.

On Szczesny, Wilson said:

I don’t think [a new goalkeeper will be at the top of the fans' shopping list], I think you run a huge risk now with Wojciech Szczesny coming through as he is, and in my opinion having the same make-up as somebody like Joe Hart who I think will be England’s goalie for many years to come.

That is a complete confidence in himself, in his ability, a brashness about it, an ability to play for Arsenal Football Club. When I say that to people they ask me, ‘What’s the difference between playing for Arsenal and Stoke City or Birmingham City?’

I’m saying this with as much respect as I can have, the plain fact is that at a club like Arsenal, Manchester United or Liverpool and I guess now Chelsea, to a degree since Abramovich has been on board, you have to have something within your make up that makes you realise it’s not good enough to come second or to come third.

You are expected to win trophies. And that becomes a huge burden. As a goalkeeper, as you know, you can be brilliant for 89 minutes and make a bad error and you will be judged on that.

Wojciech Szczesny I believe is the future in goal here. If you are good enough, you are old enough. That is the old saying.

When Real Madrid had their “Galaticos” team, guess who was the goalkeeper? A young man by the name of Iker Casillas. Wojiech is ready to play; if that hasn’t been clear from his games, then it will never be clearer. The one thing he needs is the backing of the fans, meaning not quickly crucifying him and destroying his confidence (which he has quite a bit of) should he struggle a little. We’ve all seen the experienced Van Der Saar and Pepe Reina make amateur mistakes. If Wojiech doesn’t continue to play, he may decide to go elsewhere, and he would be justified in doing so. He has earned the right to play through performing and coming up with some magnificent saves and marshaling the defense when needed.

woj is a good keeper and will become only better in years to come……what he needs now is a solid defence in front of him to avoid putting unwanted pressure on his performance…..

  • Baz says:

Buffon has been an outstanding keeper, but why would we want to sign someone whose career is on a downward spiral and has never shown any inclination to come to England? I’d have been happy if Wenger had managed to sign Reina at the end of last season, but is it likely that he’d leave Liverpool now that Dalglish seems to be turning them around? As for Steklenberg, Lloris and the like, has anybody seen them play often enough to know how good they really are? Given is a good shot stopper, nothing more, Why do you think he warms the bench at Man City while a much younger Joe Hart gets picked ahead of him? This is a case where ability is rightfully selected ahead of age. Szczesny has that ability and deserves to be our number one. As for backup, I’ve always thought that Mannone has the look of a ‘Hollywood’ keeper, with over elaborate and acrobatic saves and lacking the assurance and handling skills of someone who really commands his penalty area. Fabianski’s form suffered a disastrous dip which pretty much turned most Arsenal fans against him, but the way in which he faced up to that and turned his form around was impressive and if he’s prepared be number 2 to Szezesny I’d be happy to see him stay.

  • Ken says:

I strongly believe that our attention in the summer will not be between the posts. As much as some will disagree but before getting injured, Fabianski was having a great season and this proved Wengers persistance of sticking with some players that he sees daily in training. Next season we should maintain the Polish keepers and let them fight it out for the number ONE jesrey but the Spanish waiter has to be gone. Maybe keep mad Lehman as a goalkeeping coach. The young players have been speaking so highly of him.

  • Arsenal_Q8T says:

I agrree with the great Bob Wilson, There is something about WS he is overly confident and not much seems to rattle him. I think we need to clear out the likes of AlMunia and Fabianski. Bring in a solid GK to push WS not a proven 1 like a reina or Buffon, bit another solid GK with upside. My choice Al Habsi on loan at wigan. Will cost in the range of 3-4 Million and will create good compitition for WS. We need real compitition at all positions and we dont have that at GK.

    WS is the Future!

  • Arselicked says:

Bob is right. we don’t need another keeper. If anything we should keep mad Jens Lehman to help Fabianski and Scezney through their development.

If we bring some experienced guys like Lloris, Pepe, Stekelenburg, etc we are most likely going to lose both guys and we can’t blame them for moving on. The good thing is that they have time on their side and they have been with the team for a long time.

Everybody makes mistakes. Reina, Van Der Sar, Cech, they all make mistakes.

  • David says:

I think it is clear (to me personally) that WJ should be our number 1 for next year and Fabianski for back up.

    • Chris says:

As Martin Keown said, “Wojciech Szczesny has come in and done well and is the future so a decision has to be made whether to start him as No1 for next season or make a change.”

I think we need to bring a new goalkeeper, sell Manuel, loan Lukasz out, have Vito as third and let Wojciech and the new goalkeeper fight for the number 1 shirt.

      • wubGooner says:

        I second. Good plan!

  • albaniangooner says:

i like what he said about cheski…LOL

  • wiz gun says:

WS is not only the right choice but also the best choice to stand btn the posts of arsnl goal… If u wanna create good basic of ur team and good spirit, you must’ve to made players frm their younger age expecially in the crucial area like goal just take a look to real madrid, barca, so i’d love to see WS as our 1st choice frm now onwards. 4get this buffon, given, or whoever, they about to retire soon, we got longterm plans! do y’all 4get that??

  • dave highbury says:

Arsenal’s new defense is the business.

  • omanjedi says:

Bob is right. We just need a DM as good and tall as Vieira and natural winger to support RVP. Offload all the excess players and bring another Jack next season. And a lot more of defensive training please.
