Bob Wilson: Why for me it was either Arsenal or a different career

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Bob Wilson believes the Gunners Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski will be the two regular goalkeepers for the Gunners, next season.
Speaking to Arsenal TV Online, the former Scotland International explained that the two were very unlucky to suffer injuries just when they were doing so well in goal for Arsenal as he added the Spain’s 33-year Manuel Almunia is a very solid goalkeeper but doesn’t have the ability to “step up” to be considered good enough for top level football.
Full of praise for young Wojciech Szczesny, Wilson concluded by saying that the 20-year possesses the right mental strength to be the Club’s number one as he explained that it was the same for him when he was competing with Jim Furnell for the place in goal as he explained that self belief is a must for a goalkeeper.
He said:
[Lukasz Fabianski] has been incredibly unlucky, just as in fact [Wojciech] Szczesny has, in fact Arsenal have been very unlucky on the goalkeeping front since Jens [Lehmann] left.
But I think the fans have seen enough of Szczesny to say, ‘Wow, this boy has got something different’ and I think Lukasz did really well in the chance that he got.
Manuel Almunia has had a big chance and he’s a very very solid goalkeeper but the only thing I always said about Manuel is does he have that ability to just step up that further gear that you probably need when you’re at the very top level of the game.
There’s no doubt Wojciech will believe that he is the number one. If you don’t believe you are the best then you will struggle. If you are always looking over your shoulder you will struggle.
In the whole time I get introduced as, ‘This legendary goalie Bob Wilson who played 309 times for Arsenal’. I played 525 times for Arsenal and all those other times I was in the reserves.
But in most of the time that I was in the reserves leading up to my going in, certainly in the two seasons leading up to my claiming the place and making it my own, I believed I was better than Jim Furnell.
And if I didn’t do that I think I would have gone out of the game, gone to another career because I didn’t want to play for anybody else. I would only ever have either made it here or not.
