Arsene Wenger on the Liverpool draw and the late penalty decision

Written by Jeffrey on April 18, 2011 – 4:45

Arsenal Interactive - Player RatingsArsene Wenger

Despite taking a late stoppage-time lead, Arsenal failed to get all three points against Liverpool and are now six points from the top of the English Premier League table.

Speaking after the draw, manager Arsene Wenger admitted the draw means that the Gunners drop two important points in the title race as he added that the away side focused on defending and counter attack whenever on the ball, a strategy adopted by many teams that play at the Emirates Stadium.

Asked about the referee’s decision to give Liverpool a penalty, the Arsenal boss explained that it was not a penalty and that eight minutes of stoppage time were given by the fourth official yet the penalty decision came after eleven.

The Gunners will face North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday with leaders Manchester United in action on Tuesday away against Newcastle and third-place Chelsea to play on Wednesday, at home against Birmingham City.

On the 1-1 draw, Wenger said:

We dropped two points today. It was a difficult game against a Liverpool team who defended a lot and basically only defended.

It was difficult for us to create chances because they defended very deep. When they had the ball they played long so it was important not to make mistakes at the back. They defended well, like most of the Premier League teams that come here now.

We conceded the penalty after 11 minutes [of stoppage time] and the injury time was [supposed to be] eight minutes. It was no penalty and I don’t see where the three minutes came from.

There was no intervention from [Emmanuel] Eboue. It was Lucas who stood in his way and stopped his run to the ball. Eboue went for the ball and not for the player.

Its certified then. We are the greatest bottlers of all time. This will be remembered for a very very long time. Congrats Arsene! No team has ever had such wonderful cock-ups for themselves before.

    • billp79 says:

yeah it sucks….but we haven’t lost a league game this year…

You could see we were also playing for a penalty most of the game…we got what we deserved…..and

what the hell is with the short 10 yard passes from Koselney and Djourou to wilshire, cesc or diaby….right in front of them…..are they in capable of taking the space on the field themselves by bringing the ball up?

    • billp79 says:

      give spurs a few days

  • John Muhindo says:

Arsenal can perfectly pass the ball, but cutting abalities to win the game is not there, even defending are very weak, after scoring, they relax and do not fight to keep the win. I think wenger some how his training is questionable.

    • billp79 says:

what game were you watching…. I didn’t see a lot of quality passes.

      • Uz says:

he may have been watching barca

  • karis says:

Can somebody help Arsenal to get rid of Wenger. We need results and not complaints and explanations that do not help.

    • billp79 says:

and tell me…what is the new manager going to do….slap their behinds?

  • brayn says:

wenger is moaning again, if you cant win games accept it dont cry like a baby. why the greatest team of arsenal(according to wenger) is not performing. we hope for better future next time, with few heads rolling down the hill. including greedy chairman.

  • PaulK says:

If we finish 2nd this season I’ll be happy, unlike most supporters. I think Wenger has a point, what is the Ref doing playing on till 11 mi past

    • 11 Guns says:

in football, there is no trophy for the 2nd. nobody will remember u. i even don’t care if we finish 3rd or 4th this season. i just don’t want this late comeback thing happen again due to some stupid mistakes. but, time and time again, it happen to us. against newcastle, spurs, sunderland and now liverpool. it is better if we lose than being humiliate like this.

      • billp79 says:

yeah- early season results are really the culprete here

  • yonald says:

Didn’t see the game folks, I mean did we play that bad? And, do we really need 95 minutes plus to score just one goal against this weakened Pool?

    • Stillagooner says:

In fact I think we played well. The keeper made a couple of decent saves, we hit the bar and may I remind you, this weakened Liverpool team hammered both Manure and Man Shitty?

      • richie says:

I’m with you I also thought we played well enough to win. If we finished better we would’ve won it.

        • billp79 says:

I don’t know why but it seemed like our players kept drifting out of the shooting angles…..

      • Northbanksy says:

Yet again we failed to break down a team that came to the Emirates & primarily defended. On days like this we need some magic from the midfield & it just didn’t happen. It was the same kind of display that we had against Blackburn. Tired players lacking in ideas & half a yard off the pace.
However, we defended well & pretty much nullified any threat from Suarez or Carroll, which is no mean feat. Were we awfull, no..Had Eboue not been so rash we’d have all been celebrating a last gasp (deserved) win. As it is it’s yet more points dropped in embarrassing fashion to add to the catalogue of blunders already witnessed this season.

      • billp79 says:

just shows you MC and MU are over rated….but ties don’t get us the points.

  • omolaja alaba says:

Wenger is full of stories of how he failed to deliver all he knows to do is to make money than winning trophies..I’m loosing hope in this type of gunners I’m seeing

    • billp79 says:

      pfffht…not a fan

  • brian waldron says:

Arsenal do it again , and our manager has started is usual run of excuses. Pleae wake up and smell the roses, we just cant cut it at the top. We can pass the ball all day , and do that better than most , but the trith is passing does not win games , goals do. Yes GOALS , those obscure things that are achieved when you put the ball in the net.Arsenal need a good clean out , thats for sure. Players who dont make the grade must be shipped out and the few good players kept.We cannot challenge for anything with a bunch of innefectual overrated boys ie. wallcot, glichy, diaby, bentner, djourou, chamaka, etc. If we dont ,we will lose players like fabergas, nasri, vermaalen etc. As for yesterdays result, the blame must lie on the managers and the “idiot of the century” Eboue. Wenger for putting a team together who cant take a shot at goal and for not having a ability to score goals, and to idiot Eboue for being so stupid as to allow a player like Lucas to milk him for a penalty.Hevwas going away from goal not towards it. Hes the first that needs to be sent away. Maybe he should take frenchie wuth him and book aticket to some 3rd rate african country!

    • billp79 says:

you all are starting to sound like the editors of the mirror….or Robbie Savage….

  • Daniel L. says:

Wenger is having no mistake, refferee has made a huge blunder let arsenal struggle against Totenhamhotsper to get a solid point failure to get all three points, let wenger forget the trouphy.

  • Pat Rice says:

I think Wenger playing one striker up front at home is not the wisest hing to do, I mean we have Chamakh sitting at the bench doing nothing. Playing Rvp alone only makes our play predictable and easy to defend against cause all we do is pass the ball around the flank then cross it nowhere. Liverpool played us just like how Man U always does….. Just sit in the miidle of the box cause these Gunners aren’t going to attack through the middle that often they just gona try crossing the ball to no one.

    • 11 Guns says:

yeah. i agree with u. enough with the 4-5-1 formation. if u want to play cross, use chamakh instead a go for 4-4-2 formation. get rid of diaby. van persie is just wandering around the midfield area. walcott should not be sub by bendtner. bendtner can never be a winger. he has no speed and his ball control is poor. yesterday tactical is a joke. and arsenal is the clown of this season. enough said.

      • billp79 says:

I would play Rvp behind Chahmak…..you could see robin was having a difficult time checking back to the ball…I think that is where Mourne shines…plus it gets Robin facing the goal…

    • arsefan says:

      100% Agreed
      One striker is not Good.
We need Robin Van persie10 Playing of A goal poacher.
Not Bentdner Or chamakh. I honestly think they are not good enough.
We Need to Change from 4-3-3 To 4-2-1-2-1.

  • c.juillet says:

what Wenger said is actually true as far as the game went as I saw it-however feel pathetic even saying it s we always seem to have an excuse and sound like poor losers-but can’t deny fact that ref didn’t blow whistle right time plus Lucas/Eboue penalty very dubious if you watch closely. I know we have had times where we have benefited from wrong ref decisions but I am sure we have lost more points on wrong decisions against us overall.

  • Oketch Joseph Mary says:

These refferee are heavily protected despite the clear bias and may be intended blunders. All we can do is salvage ourselves by hammering Totenhamhotsper.

  • Marc says:

Yesterdays game was wrong on so many levels.
Some questions for Mr Wenger (or anyone that has answers)

    1. Why oh why do we play 1 up front at home
    2. Do we need 5 across the middle is it to protect our weak defence
    3. Why use theo’s speed to put crosses in when nobody tries to get in the box
    4. Why does Diaby beat 2 players only to give the ball away EVERY time
    5. Why bring on Bendnter and why play him on the wing
    6. Why won’t Arshavin work for the team
    7. Why do we have a captain that wants to leave
    8. Why can’t we shoot with power
    9. Why when we don’t win is it ALWAYS someone else’s fault
    10. Why does everyone see what we need except Wenger
    11. If Chelski get ahead of us will Wenger say 3rd place is a success
    And finally
Will I have to spend the summer hoping we will buy a spine for our team?

    • Pat Rice says:

Those question keep clouding my mind every time in this part of the season, the thing is most of us fans want change in Arsenal and not changes like getting rid of Wenger or spending crazy like Spuds. All we want is for the club to show they respect our loyalty by at least showing some ambition to win the title and not just only focus on balancing the books, cause in all honesty a really successful club balances both these aspects. The salary cap policy is ridiculous in this day in age, cause when players like Samir Nasri want a higher salary that go beyond the cap, we won’t give it to him then we lose out on a great player. The other problem would be that I’ve noticed that Wenger keeps buying the same type of players that do the same thing the other player that left did, he must try get some players with a little less skill but a whole lot of heart……… Scott Parker anyone?

      • tommy says:

Agreed. Parker and how about Alou Diarra from Bordeaux. Either would be a good captain (Diarra captains France)

    • Paddy O'Neill says:

I’ve been a supporter since 1966 – here’s my pessemistic prediction – Chelski will get ahead of us, so will ManC, so will Spuds – we will be playing in Europa League next season. I’m not good on predictions so here’s hoping.

    • Hunter says:

I agree with almost all of your questions here but I have to say one thing. Arshavin worked his ass off tracking back yesterday which is more than can be said for Diaby or Cesc in the second half. They were both jogging around whenever they lost the ball.

The rest of your comments are spot on.

  • Rokabox says:

It was a dubious penality that the ref gave against Eboue, plus it was way over the allowed time. you can say that, but why in the first place Arsenal put themselves in these situations
you have to ask, why concede the free kick that led to the penality in the first place?

And you can question how to loose a game when you are two nill up at home, and
tragically when you four nill up at half time. You can blame the refs all day. but the fact
is that Arsenal team is not good enough, mentally, and technically. and Wenger is the
man responsible. He must change his ways to take the club forward

  • santos says:

Arsenal players they lack winning mentality. They need a team leader, someone who can organise the team when 3 points is only they need and also the need a top striker who can score goals when even the team is not perfoming well.

  • Bouba says:

I just don’t understand why Wenger is always blaming outside factors…!!!
Why doesn’t he put responsibilities on his players???
With him it is always someone else fault !! how can his players learn???

We are living the same season again and I just hope Chelsea won’t pass us…!!

    • Charlie says:

Not true, he clearly blamed the players for a bad performance against Blackburn. What can he do when the players play well, except Fabregas, but are lacking the belief to put the ball in the net. Blaming the players won’t help, it’ll just make them less confident. There is an edge missing, that unerring ability to stick the ball in the net that teams get when they have strung together a sequence of good results and the fans are behind them. I sensed that the players feel this just isn’t our season and i have to say the fans aren’t helping. Over the commentary yesterday i heard screams of “you’re **** !” from the Arsenal fans at their own players and “earn your wages you ****!”. They’re not robots and attacking them for the money they earn is stupid. It’s a very talented squad, possibly the best in the league on paper, which lacks the belief that they can be Champions. In contrast United have overall less talented individuals but an absolute belief that they will win every game and are destined to win the league every year.

      • Hunter says:

He has to blame himself for continuously hanging on to players with such a weak mentality that they fold under the slightest pressure.

  • frenchie says:

it has been some time since posting here (a case of if you havent got anything nice to say…). however, today i cannot refrain. our so called dressing room talisman, eboue, is not fit to wear the kit. yes, he gave away a cheap penalty where 1) he should hav eknown lucas was looking for it, 2) there was no need to push onto the ball as it was moving away from lucas and the box, and 3) if he felt the need to defend like a glove, then all he needed to do was walk towards the ball and stand with his hands behind his back; however, the most frustating moment i had in the match was not his penalty, it was when he lay on the pitch, while leaving djourou exposed to suarez’s speed. and this is his game; this is what he does for kicks. he was a disgrace when he tackled his own player several years ago and he is still a disgrace, today.

  • Gunner says:

Agreed on Eboue giving away a stupid penalty, Prior to that he was looking one of the most dangerous attacking threats!! Which is bad news for Arsenal?
What has become of Nasri? He was turning into a great player for a while, now he is gone back to the old Nasri, an ordinary player! Fabregas just does not seem interested anymore?? Diaby does something good and then wants 20 minutes walking around the field admiring everyone? Does anyone ever tell that guy to ‘wake up’?
This team needs a driving force in the middle of the park to win tackles, break up attacks and run at opponents who defend the edge of the penalty area?
It also needs a striker who wants to finish! Who wants to get in the box and score!!!
Also, we need a plan B! Plan A is slow it down and pass, exactly what a packed defense wants????

Afraid we need a new manager to start with?
