Tottenham vs Arsenal: Top-four in danger if we lose. Plus favourite line-up

Arsenal Interactive - Squad SelectorWhite Hart Lane

The Game

It is funny how whenever our title hopes are dead and buried, points are dropped by those leading us in the table and suddenly, it’s game on.

But, as I look at the English Premier League table, I just can’t ignore the fact that if we lose tomorrow’s game we will not only wave goodbye to the title but we would only have seven points more than Tottenham Hotspur with them having a game in hand.

Before analysing the game, I wanted to start by asking a simple question: Am I the only one believing some are being a little harsh on Emmanuel Eboue after what happened on Sunday?

I mean Emmanuel is not what one would call a “defender”, he is more dangerous and more of an asset when he pushes forward down the right, something that he did exceptionally well throughout the whole game. Then he made a mistake, granted, opting to stay very close to Lucas instead of just pushing him wide waiting for the final whistle.

But is he the only one to blame? Of course not. Why is it that few or nobody is talking about Wojciech Szczesny’s clearance that started the move that led to the foul on the edge of the penalty box? Or the way Alex Song cleared Raul Meireles cross? Or Laurent Koscielny’s pathetic attempt to clear the danger or the comical way these two tried to block Jonjo Shelvey first and Lucas then?

Bacary Sagna is back but please let’s not forget that Emmanuel Eboue – who was back in action after weeks without playing – did very well against Blackpool and Liverpool and it’s unfair to blame him for the dropped points against the Reds, because, as I said, it was a “collective” mistake that saw us concede such a late equaliser.

As for tomorrow, there’s no “What do these footballers all have in common?” from me, it’s not in my style, I will just say that I expect a response from the players although it will be very, very difficult to leave White Hart Lane with all three points.

We all know Spurs, they will run and fight as if it’s the Champions League final and knowing that a draw or a defeat would kill our slim title hopes, well, it’s not difficult to predict how determined they will be.

Although having said that, we rarely disappointed in big games this season and that is basically the reason why I am confident that we will play a big game, will hopefully get all three points and then wait for Manchester United to drop points, because, I’m afraid, that’s the only way for us to be crowned Champions at the end of the season.

As always, my favourite line-up is below. Remember you can submit your own at Arsenal Interactive and then share it on Twitter and Facebook.

Favourite line-up

Tottenham Hotspur vs Arsenal

Call me crazy, but both Jack Wilshere and Samir Nasri didn’t impress in their last two games, especially the newly-crowned PFA Young Player of the Year and with Arsene saying that “Wilshere played many games”, I wouldn’t be surprised if he agrees with me and starts him on the bench.

As for Samir, it seems he lost a little that start-of-the-season magic and with Andrey Arshavin initially rested against Liverpool, I expect him to start.

Wojciech Szczesny should start in goal with Bacary Sagna back in the defensive department with our manager also saying that both Manuel Almunia and Denilson are fit but will not even be on the bench. It seems that these two, as many have been predicting for months, will indeed leave in the summer.

It was never a pen to be honest. Lucas cheated. He threw himself into eboue. To me eboue had a good game. Surely is not the way to who and l can say arsenal didnt deserve to win. People here know am not a fan of aw. The team has no killer instinct. But l still look forward for the title anyway.

good to see a positive post after so many days…..

  • Dobbi says:

Tottenham 1 – 3 Arsenal – Crouch, RvP, Arshavin, RvP

    • jeff says:

      I agree arsenal win.. spur 1 arsenal 3.. gunner4life..

  • SeanP says:

    Line up: 4-4-2
    Sczceny,
    sagna, djouru, koscielny, clichy
    song, cesc, walcott, ashavin
    VP, Chamack

  • jason says:

I almost always predict the right result and I do believe Arsenal will win tommorow.

    • WafflingWenger says:

haha. You must make a fortune!

  • jason says:

What annoys me is everyone is so negative we challenging Man U all the way and we reached a final and lost it right at the end.

What that tells me is we are a very good team and very close to winning we just need a bit more quality.

So ad 3 players Striker, Centre back and goal keeper.

Dont forget we have even more players coming through for next season.

And we will win the premier league next season no doubt as long as we keep Cesc.

Keep Denilson, Rosicky, Bendtner, Diaby and all those as squad players.

A goal keeper alone could of won us the carling cup and made the different this season for the title.

    • Oti says:

You’re demented. Keep Denilson?? So he can collect free money when he’s clearly not good enough for arsenal

    • SeanP says:

Denilson is a Liability, there are much better players out there that could fill his boots

      • jason says:

Missing the point play him in easy games in the carling and Fa Cup to keep our first squad fit.

  • Northbanksy says:

This is equally important for both clubs top 4 status & a draw doesn’t really suit anyone.

Earlier in the season a first choice 11 was established which got the balance right between whole team defence & attack. Neither Arsahvin nor Diaby featured because though they have their moments they tend weaken the side defensively. Against a Spurs team that needs to win & who will not want to lose to Arsenal at home we need all 10 outfield players playing their part defensively…not 8. Wilshere & nasri should both start.

  • jijo says:

honestly im saying this will be 2-1 to tottenham

  • Irish arsenal says:

I just know gomes will be man of the match!!

  • TheIceManCometh says:

Whoever thought ManU wouldn’t drop points along the way (they still have to play Chelsea and at the Emirates–hope actual fans show up for that one–before the season ends) was deluded. Again, whether the title goes to Arsenal or not remains in our hands. Every game has to be a win (I have a feeling United will drop 3 or 2 points against Chelsea), which will allow us to beat United by 1 point if the results match up as I think. And Lucas is a word I’ll refrain from using here; before he was hated at Liverpool, now he is some kind of hero. Eboue gave us an important goal against Blackpool and did exceptionally well until the “let me foul you and then dive” penalty.

    • TheIceManCometh says:

Also regarding Samir’s recent drop in goal scoring, teams are starting to double up on his side of the field; whenever he gets the ball, he has two or even three defenders to get through (I remember against Liverpool he received the ball near the goal line and had to make it past two defenders before passing the ball). Teams aren’t stupid (Bale has the same problem), it is just a matter of finding the open man or another player exploiting the space left open by the extra attention to Samir.

      • Hunter says:

Absolutely right. Any time Theeo or Samir were on the ball they were double or triple teamed.

        • jeff says:

yes i agree.. but arsenal win.. spur 1 arsenal 3.. crouch 1 RVP 2 wallcott 1

      • Steve of Chiang Mai says:

True, but that is because Samir has become predictable he will dribble to the corner and then turn back on himself so all you need to do is have the inside man track him and the other guy sit just behind. He also should be heading into the box when Walcott has the ball and visa versa….

  • Jekyll says:

Sorry, did you really say ‘we rarely disappointed in big games this season’?

Every single time it’s really mattered, the players have fallen short – CC Final, v Barca, v Man U and the dropping of crucial points in recent weeks in the league when the heat has been on.

This current Arsenal team are defined by the fact they always collapse at the crucial stage of the season, when the ‘big games’ are – this is the crux of everyone’s criticism!!

    • Fonz678 says:

Exactly right, the only “big” games that we have won was the Chelsea win and the Barca home win, which in the end didnt really matter much.

      • TheIceManCometh says:

What about thrashing Birmingham at their place? Before then, Birmingham was undefeated and had the lowest goal concession rate at home.

        • Hunter says:

Since then they have been fighting off entering the relegation battle so they are hardly what one should be touting as a great win.

          • soccersurf says:

We had “BIG” games or cup finals as Jack said against Blackburn, Sunderland, and Liverpool. Those were all MUST WIN games according to many including Wenger and we all know how that went

We need to not use a 4-5-1 or if we do stop crossing the ball into the box because we have no aerial threat and when i see a cross to Nasri i just laugh.

  • Bayonne Jean says:

Chris, you’re spot on by drawing attention to the COLLECTIVE breakdown at the death. After Szczesny had collected the Kuyt effort, all he really need to do was take his time, use that old keeper trick of slowly motioning the rest of the side three or four times to push out downfield, slowly walk up to the eighteen and then kick the ball beyond the half line and out of bounds. Calm things down. Concede the throw in — much easier to defend, no Delap in the building. Even take a yellow card for delay, for cryin’ out loud.

I also felt that Eboue had a good effort overall, following up his good effort (with cracking goal) at the seaside.

  • Bob the Gunner says:

    Put Lehmann in goal please!!!

  • arzenal says:

in feel totnam will win it since they playing with more heart than arsenal
    BLAME WENGER !!

  • Phil23 says:

I like the line-up and my only difference would be that i’d start with Samir on the right. Theo imo isn’t quite putting together a 90 minutes and I would much prefer his pace at the end of a game than the start. In saying this I hope he would still get half an hour at least. Samir on the right is a better player than Samir on the left. I agree completely that Wilshere should be dropped. Hes suffering a bit from burnout and if I was Arsene I would drop him for the rest of the season. (Big call I know) Diaby is looking great at the moment and has played barely any games this season so I can only see him improving knowing that Jack could be back at any time. Jack needs to pay the price for going to the Olympics and I would rather we lose him now for 6 weeks and he be well rested for the tournament than give him to England burnt out, as they wont care and will put him on the pitch for every minute mark my words. To be honest my biggest worry for this game is Song. He looked out of sorts against Liverpool and for me he will be the decider of the game. An in form Song will mean we dominate midfield and surely we will score a couple. An out of form Song means we could be on the back foot a bit and if Tottenham score first it wont be good. I think we’ve got a win in us for this game but no prediction from me.

  • Alpha T says:

I agree with Bob the gunner, Lehman should start! Sczcesneys great but Lehmans experience could prove decisive!

I think we’ll probably get another draw.

As much as I love both Diaby & Arsh, I don’t think Spurs away is the right game to play both we need Wilshere, Nasri & Songs fighting spirit we can’t afford passengers defensively!

  • Dave says:

Regarding Eboue, he did play a decent game before he gave away the penalty but what’s the point of playing well most of the time if he’s going to make stupid mistakes that will cost us the game in the end?

Great, Man United dropped some points, so those two points dropped against Liverpool is more cruical than we thought.

If there’s still that great manager that guided us to numerous trophies in the 1st half of his career at Arsenal left, Wenger will lead us to no less than a victory against the spuds. If we don’t win the league, at least don’t let the spuds celebrate that they ended our chance of winning the league.

  • trythisthen says:

In case it hadn’t occurred to anyone, there are still 18 points up for grabs. Of course it’s unrealistic to expect we’ll get all 18 but come on, it’s not as cut and dried as some on here would have you believe. Fab’s statement that the team doesn’t have maturity and lacks a winning instinct should, if the lads have any shred of pride, spur (sorry) us on to make a real effort for the title – this is no time for quitters now. United WILL drop points, against us for starters, and so will Chelsea. Those of you going to games, cheer your lungs out. Let’s get this thing done.

    • Dave says:

Yes, there’s 18 points to gain but the thing is we have to win those games and our form has been terrible. Apart from facing us and chelski, Man United have an easier run in than us where we travel to face the spuds, Bolton, Stoke and Fulham. I’m still going to have hope as slim as it is. There were many times Man United slip up but we failed to close the gap due to defensive errors and failing to hold the lead. If you count up all those games, we could have been in the position where we’re above Man United.

  • matt says:

its a rival game, so I really would like some players with passion and so would like Jack to start, even though hes probably half dead from all the matches hes played.

Glad to know Sagna is back, I think a more defensively stable rightback is needed against Bale, even if his crossing is not so stable :)

Either way, this is quite the match for hanging on to our title hopes, so lets get em!!!!

ps: lets bring adebayor back just to score against them

  • Gitari says:

Arsenal has the strongest team avahlable. So it is Spurs 2, arsenal 4. Van persie on the double. Arshavin, walcott on target as well. Late flurry from spurs with bale, lennon.

  • caligunna16 says:

    ——————woji—————
    sagna—-djourou—kos–clichy
    —————-song——————–
    walcott——-cesc——arshavin
    ———-RVP————————-
    ——————-chamakh———

    diaby nasri and bendtner

    • svltj says:

Agree there should be two forwards.

RVP as a lone striker is too feeble up front, defenders get all over him & we can’t get a proper cross in unless we’re lucky. Against Liverpool even Walcott or Nasri barely managed to get past their 2-3 defenders each. Chamakh AND RVP would leave a bit more room for one of them to find free space, plus Chamakh is a better header.

Sagna/Djourou/Koscielny/Clichy with Song midfield seems very solid defensively, as long as Kosc / Song don’t concede a penalty or a free kick around the box… they need to be a bit more careful I think.

Would not start with Walcott, bring him in when needed as a supersub – Arshavin and Nasri work well.

  • serge says:

luckily enough manchester have kept us in the title race, so same scenerio, bring it back to 4 points challenge united on the first of may and the title could be ours

  • Captain says:

Everybody keeps saying United will drop points.ok granted that happens are we not also going to drop points? We always find bizzare ways of dropping points. Newcastle ,Sunderland, blackburn, wba, liverpool …..oh yes and spurs at home.not easy be an arsenal fan

  • soushio says:

oh please Arsenal do us proud!! I’m now banned from watching midweek games at the crack of dawn (thanks mum!)

It really is time for the players to get a grip, and what better opportunity than a derby?
I cannot stress how important it is to win at spurs, and since a lot of people have been reiterating the reasons, let me just say:

    Come on you gunners!!

  • Arsenalisto says:

“Call ME crazy”, you sound like your the first one to suggest that Wilshere should be rested. Wenger already said that Wilshere is tired at this stage of the season and that he will rotate in that area for the games left, anyway Chris thanks for the ban from chat lol
