Arsene Wenger: The unbeaten run shows there is no winning mentality problem

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes the Gunners’ sixteen-game unbeaten run shows that the players do not lack a winning mentality.

With captain Cesc Fabregas and former players Patrick Vieira and Paul Merson all believing Arsenal lack a winning mentality, the Frenchman explained that the next step is to transform the draws to wins as he added that such a long unbeaten run clearly shows that the problem is not as serious as painted by some.

And on the mid-week draw against Tottenham in which the Gunners failed to keep a two-goal lead, the Arsenal boss said that it is not a shame to get a draw out of an outstanding game against a very good team.

Arsenal’s longest winning streak during the unbeaten run was at the start of the year with three games won with Wenger believing the Gunners can improve on that and win all their five remaining games and if they do, they will be champions.

On Friday afternoon, the manager said:

[Lacking a winning mentality?] No. I would say I explain the situation on the sixteen unbeaten run in the Premier League, so at least we have not a losing mentality and it’s down to us to transform the draws now in a winning habit.

I understand that your job is to create crisis after crisis but I have to take that with a little distance. When you’re on a sixteen unbeaten run in the Premier League of this quality, the situation is not as black as you paint it.

We just played 3-3 at Tottenham, it is not a shame, it was an outstanding game, if you say our performance was horrific I will say, ‘OK, we have to stand up for a poor performance’.

[But] I think you have to analyse that it was an outstanding game, that we played against a good team, a fantastic football game.

[Doubts that we can win five in a row?] No. We have a good basis because we are consistent, we played sixteen games without losing. What I feel most important for us is to keep the belief and to win, I’m convinced that if we win our five games, we will the Championship.

    Daaaaamn…

  • taha says:

No one would want arsene to leave but , can’t he buy some useful defender and a finisher … but i believe wenger has gave up on winning titles , he just wants to develop players …

  • Shafiu says:

Hhmm the drama will not end b/w Wenger and fans. To me there is nothing to prove winning mentality by sixteen unbeat, are all sixteen game won? Whether winning mentality or not(i don’t even beleive it) we have to adjust our players. Some players has to go and new ones have bring in. I lost title hope since.

  • Goonster says:

Arsene Wenger has become a politician. I wish Arsenal could defend their goal with as much commitment as Wenger defends his way of doing things. We might actually close out a game then. THE LACK OF WINS SHOWS A LACK OF WINNING MENTALITY!!! Pretty soon he’s going to start using the line, “Because I said so.”

  • tommy says:

How many of those unbeaten games have we been ahead and blown the lead??? All the unbeaten run proves is that the players are afraid of losing BUT also that they don’t have what it takes to win. Arsenal will turn the draws into wins after the table has been decided and teams aren’t playing hard. I hope Wenger is just bluffing. If he truly believes this we will see no players brought in this summer that can get us through the annual Feb/March collapse with enough points to stay in the title race. Wenger will just bring up a few more reserve players, and we will see a repeat of the costly blunders and Fab/March collapse next season too

  • harry alumenda says:

development of young playes is not helping us(supporters) we are not shareholders that we will get a divident at the end.we are happy when arsenal wins.we want trophies not player.it doesnt matter who brings the trophy whether old or young.we are losing patience and trust in ur philosophy.pliz do something.

  • tommy says:

the unbeaten run shows there is a DRAWING mentality Wenger. That’s the reality

  • jason says:

LMAO Wenger I love you to bits but stop being cheap and get the 3 players we so desperately need.

  • Danielle says:

OMG! We are a joke. Do you think Man U or Chelsea care about our ‘unbeaten run’? It’s laughable.

  • D.j. says:

Wenger will never change. Same Old stubborn Wenger.

  • serge says:

If Wenger put a dollar every time he says “winning mentality’ or ‘attitude’ he would be able to sign a top class keeper

  • soccersurf says:

its not even an unbeaten run because we lost to b’ham and barcelona, and yes i know he is talking about the league but he is acting like things are going well

win 5 in a row?! SHUT UP WENGER AND JUST FOCUS ON BOLTON FFS

  • 9jagun says:

what arsenal is lacking is just a diehard attitude all the players are good but they need players who can score 3-1 and leave it at that with a diehard manner. Mourinho kind of coaching could bring it out in them but I am not saying Wenger should go.. May he should call Mourinho and borrow some words.

  • WC says:

What will Arsene say if the team went through an entire season unbeaten but drew all 38 games and got relegated. He’s obviously getting senile because he’s lost out on the difference between winning and drawing.

  • wachid says:

yes wenger is stubborn. He acts as if everything is fine. But lets just see how wenger’s mimic during the match against liverpool and spurs.
The solution is just sell cesc and clichy. Buy nigel de jong. Arsenal will not be champion as long cesc is playing. Use 2 striker, rvp and chamakh. Nasri in the left. Arshavin in the right. Song and de jong in central midfield. Place djorou in left, eboue in right. Vermaleen and koscielny in central. Fixed.
