Laurent Koscielny: The reason why we may not win the Championship

Written by Renzo on April 30, 2011 – 4:45

Arsenal Interactive - Squad SelectorSamir Nasri and Laurent Koscielny

A very honest Laurent Koscielny admitted cheap points dropped against the likes Newcastle, Sunderland, Blackburn, Liverpool and Tottenham is the reason why Arsenal may not with the title this season.

Speaking to Arsenal TV Online, the Frenchman explained that it is very difficult when you don’t win games adding that conceding a late equaliser against Liverpool at the Emirates was very bad for the players.

On dropping points in games they were expecting to win, the 25-year old declared that the Gunners had plenty of opportunities to score but failed to do so adding that luck could have played a factor when wins were not achieved.

And on the Newcastle game in which Arsenal lost a four goal lead, Koscielny concluded by saying that the players thought they had the game in the bag after the first half but that Abou Diaby’s red card changed it around.

On this season, the centre back said:

We didn’t win any game [lately] so it’s difficult to win the Championship. We drew against Liverpool in the 101st minute so it’s difficult because we have the three points [but] then we concede from a penalty, for us it’s very bad.

Against Tottenham it’s the same, we were leading 3-1, they scored two goals so for us it’s difficult because we played very well, we made a lot of effort to win the game so it’s difficult.

If we don’t win the Championship it’s because we dropped many points, like Newcastle, Sunderland, Blackburn, Liverpool and Tottenham, a lot of points where we had a lot of opportunities to score. Maybe the luck wasn’t with us.

[Newcastle] was a strange game, at half time we were four nil up, we thought we won the game easily [but] after Abou Diaby was sent off the game changed. It’s hard for us but we were up 4-0 and never expected to lose the game.

First i should say that overall i want Wenger to stay but there is one thing about him that just baffles me. Why did he not bring on a sub after scoring in the 95th minute against Liverpool ? Why, when ahead with a few minutes to go does he make attacking substitutions when every other manager makes defensive substitutions and plays on the counter ? Why does he never ever no matter what happens alter the formation or tactics ? Ok, that’s three connected things. The only other successful team that never changes formation or tactics is Barcelona and i think the reason is that he feels equal to Barcelona. Sorry but we’re not at the point where we have the luxury of being in complete control against every team in the world.

  • hec says:

Has anyone noticed that at Arsenal the defenders blame the forwards for not scoring and the forwards blame the defenders for leaking goals , there is obvioulsy a serious rift in the dressing room there.

    • Charlie says:

Nowhere does he blame the forwards. “a lot of points where we had a lot of opportunities to score. Maybe the luck wasn’t with us.” is hardly an attack on the forwards, you’re making a mountain out of a mole hill. When he mentions the Newcastle game he’s definitely not criticising the forwards, he’s just not criticising himself when perhaps he should be. It’s quite simple, a 4-4 draw is the fault of the defenders, a 0-0 draw is the fault of the forwards, don’t you think.

  • Jayanta says:

What kind of a defender conceeds so many penaly and cards in a season. He should introspect whether he is worth of Arsenal shirt for the present.

    • gerry dee says:

he’s hardly had a steady partner in many games this season, wasn’t expected to play so many games this season and has hugely improved himself

he wasn’t supposed to be perfect, before djourou was injured (he came back from injury with less pace) koscielny and djourou were a formidable defense.

    • Jason says:

It is his debut season for Arsenal. Howlers like in the Birmingham finals gonna haunt him some while. However, he still have some excellent performance for us like game against Barca at home. He is still new to EPL, lets get him some time to settle himself. With Vermaelen coming back, I really can’t wait to see our new backline in the coming season.

    • Giddy says:

stop going overboard. this guy is a hardworker and has done a decent job. i think defense is often critisized for poor defending but where are the forwards who are also supposed to be defending when set pieces are played? how many chances do we get but don’t use? no one has mentioned that the invisibles used to score many goals to scare the opponents from attacking our back and my understanding is telling me that wenger should buy one deadly striker to pay with walcot upfront.

  • Andrew says:

No point blaming the Kos. If Wenger was serious about winning the EPL he would have brought a quality defender, rather than trying to make ‘diamonds’. As Lee Dixon mentioned, when Wenger came to Arsenal he allowed players to play freely and express themselves. But players had been taught the fundamentals by George Graham, so it was easy to play freely. But it obvious that the current squad haven’t learned the fundamentals of defending.

  • Kero says:

Rather than spending 22m on Benzema, Wenger better to table the amount to get Falcao. Arsenal need a goal poacher and just like Javier Hernandez, Falcao has a pace, instinct to score and good header. Falcao is what Arsenal need after Eduardo.

    • Charlie says:

In an ideal world it’d be that simple but he will cost upwards of 30m i expect. I just read an article saying that a talented young striker called Bojan at Barcelona is getting itchy feet from so much time on the bench and might request a transfer. He scored 16 goals in 20 for Spain U17s up until 2006 but then didn’t break into Barcas’ team and he’s now 20. Then there’s Juan Manuel Mata at Valencia. His team are still in financial trouble and may be forced to sell. In both cases their teams might be willing to let them go and they’re much more likely purchases for Wenger.

      • soccersurf says:

Dumb comment – you think Barca are going to sell us someone after the Cesc situation. And for a good price

Maybe in a trade for cesc but that is it
And you want us to be a 20 year old short unproven striker? To improve our team?!

    • Giddy says:

well said. wenger should buy this guy

  • The BearMan says:

Sometimes we have to face the fact: my team Arsenal just is not good enough and have not been for a period of years because of cultivating the wrong mental attitude. Winning is not a habit, but playing times sexy football.

Let us face it, what football team in the world expecting to be champions will advertise its weaknesses! This is problem that is evident at Arsenal and runs through the entire academy. A sensible builder starts with a firm foundation and build upwards. At Arsenal under Mr. Wenger the focus has always been midfield and the defense and forwards down played. His focus is on the centre.

A solid defense is crucial then midfield and the forwards. Any manager preparing a team to face Arsenal knows exactly where to launch an attack. They know our strengths and our weaknesses. Then the Arsenal team is light weight, they know that we are a bit fragile, so their effort will be on upsetting the Arsenal getting into a rhythm, their smooth passing game. Upset their concentration and they will loose the flow and their strength, passing game will suffer. Luck no, failure to spot the obvious and take appropriate action. Fergie’s plans will be to do just that.

Why Mr. Wenger never noticed Arsenal’s weakness is because he never spot it. He always believe it was due to the midfield falling apart. No effort and concentration when on the defense and strike force.

    • Charlie says:

True and to blame it on the injury to TV is to be deluding yourself. United sufferred just as much with injuries to Rio and Vidic but their 3rd and 4th choice defenders were more consistent than ours and their tactics were more solid. Chelsea have had a much more solid defense than Arsenal this season and so have Man City. This is the area that Wenger promised to address last summer (“you cannot concede more than 40 goals and expect to win the league”) and he bought poorly. Make the big decisions Arsene, Koschielny is too error-prone, so is Squillaci so sell them both for whatever you can get. Some fans will forgive you for these mistakes because of past glories but if you are going to make mistakes admit them, correct them and do the right thing next time. Few people can forgive you for seeing the problem 2 or even 3 years running and still not being able to put things right so this summer is your last chance to buy that big defender that we all know is needed. I just have a horrible feeling that he’ll stick with what he’s got.

  • Arsenal lack experience to grind some positive results on their bad days. In the middle of this season I truly thought they were going to win the league this year but failed to take advantage so many times to move closer to the top. Lost points (2+2+2+3 = 9) from Rovers, Liverpool, Spurs and bolton would have see them tied top of the league by now going into a decide game tomorrow with United. For now tomorrow’s games is all about pride and maintaining mathematical possibilities and nothing more.

  • Geez-whizz says:

Gee, listen to all the experts.

  • SeattleGooner says:

I think people are being a little too critical of koscielny. FOr a player to come to epl and from his first game have to be his teams core defender, that’s no easy task. In addition he’s had to play most his games at the left centerback which is not his favored side. He had to do this because Djourou can’t play on the left.

That being said, No one in this club should be above reproach at this point. But I hesitate to say he’s unfit for the shirt. Time will tell.

    • SeattleGooner says:

By the by… Watching Weder Bremen vs Wolfsburg to get a look at Mertesacker and the attacker Marin, and caught a glimpse of a ghost from the past… Watching Mikael Silvestre play a bad back pass to the keeper, and get beaten several times on defense.

By the way, Mertesacker looks amazing

    • Charlie says:

David Luiz. Are people still talking about how he needs time to settle, he was bought in January ? No people are saying how he looks World Class already. Stop this kid-gloves attitude and see these players for what they are and that is NOT GOOD ENOUGH !

      • SeattleGooner says:

        LOL grow up.

Firstly, anyone that knows or has Read my posts on this site and others would not accuse me of treating this team with kid gloves. I’m just not so quick to decide we need to rubbish the whole team. Koscielny especially has had an up and down year. I think played on his side, he does show promise.

Secondly, your comparing Koscielny to David Luiz?? Apples and Oranges. Koscielny was unproven with one year in top flight costing Wenger £10m. By comparison David Luiz was an established (young but established) name who cost Chelsea around £25m. Simply put, you often (but not always) get what you pay for.

To recap, £25m buys you an internationally capped and possibly future world XI defender. £10m buys you a defender with 1 year of top flight experience.

        • Hunter says:

I think that’s the point everyone is getting at. We bought a 25 year old with almost no top flight experience when what we needed was a commanding, experienced defender. In my opinion Koscielny is the worst of the pack as far as our defenders go and I have no idea what made Arsene pay 10 million for him. Complete joke of a purchase.

          • SeattleGooner says:

I completely agree with buying this summer, i never stated otherwise. Definitely need a big commanding presence back there.

To me, koscielny represents some of the best and worst this year. Amazing against barcelona, but then commits the gaff of the season in the carling cup final.

My feeling is that he was giving to much too quickly. Give him time as a 3rd 4th cb and I think he could do well.

Mean squillaci has been steadily poor all year. Decide for yourself between the up and Down of Kozzer or the quality(lack thereof) of squillaci

  • ralz says:

falcao for me an alround striker and fantastic work rate which will suitable for the pl and swap melo for denilsion

    • Charlie says:

Juventus are begging everyone to take Melo off their hands, he’s had a terrible season. Juve are way down the table and he is one of the main reasons for it. No thanks.

      • Hunter says:

I have to agree, I want no part of Mello. He is awful.

        • SeattleGooner says:

he has been in a freefall of form since South Africa.

  • Henry XIV says:

I love Wenger but his attitude to losing is rubbing off on the Players: at no point do they blame themselves, say “we panick” “we are not good enough” “we lack maturity” for ecample.
Instead it’s “we have no luck” and “we played well”

if we keep thinking that, we will never win again.

  • Abu says:

Sack Wenger en our woes will end forever.

    • Bendnter's First Touch says:

We don’t need to change the manager, we need the manager to change a little bit.

      • Jason says:

You got the point dude. Without Wenger, we are not even near to where we are today.

    • Dan says:

Agreed. Wenger won’t change by the way! He’s a stubborn, deluded old fool and if he were to stay in charge next season, we’ll probably be lucky to finish sixth. The guy’s a liability!

      WENGER OUT!!! KLOPP IN!!!

      • Charlie says:

That’s a bit much Dan. He’s far from a deluded old fool, he’s the best manager we’ve ever had but he made terrible signings last year. The last player he bought that was good enough for Arsenal was Vermaelen and i was surprised at how good he was. Koscielny cost 10m quid, he has to be seen as a flop. As time has gone on the signings have got worse so i don’t know why i expect better this summer but i’m ready to give him one last chance to get it right. If you look back to his first season he signed Vieira, Anelka, Upson, Petit, Grimandi and Overmars plus 5 other players for a total of about 20m. That’s remarkable. Last season Chamakh, Koscielny and Squillaci for a total of 14m (Chamakh was free). What’s happenned ????

        • 11 Guns says:

it’s because ronaldo. his 80 million price tag inflated the market. and you forgetting HENRY!

          • Charlie says:

You missed the point Guns. Those players were all bought in Wengers’ first summer. Henry didn’t come along until 3 years later. Inspired signing obviously but my point was that once upon a time every player he bought turned to gold. He was able to find players that were relatively cheap and they’d almost all become stars but now he signs more flops than stars. He’s lost the midas touch.

  • brayn says:

real arsenal fans were asking for proper reinforcements before season began, that time we were made look like jokers, now what you morons what you have to is this our greatest team and manager, we have few good players and an adamant manager, who is wearing pink glasses at the moment. And shitty board, who wants only money. if we dont spend get some quality in defense and offensive department, we are gonna be same. and get rid of likes of denilson, kosh, squil, diaby…..blah………….
wenger remove your glasses, world will be normal again.

  • Robbie D says:

I watched his interview and it was a real chore sitting through it. Koscielny needs to go to extra English lessons, he struggles with basic English.

  • Daniel Wong says:

Agree with bearman. Wenger better know the red faced will play hit and score. First he

pack the midfield and let the gunners 99% possession. The gunners will indulge in

passing to the death/gallery because it is eye catching.

At some point the ball will be intercepted. and Bang the ball is in the gunners net.

Hopefully the gunners won’t fall into the trap .

  • PaulK says:

We are so closed to winning every competition we’re in. There are more good things about the team than bad. It is not all doom & gloom. With the new majority owner Wenger finally has a strong partner like he had in the old days. Add to that our average age being 23 and that we’re in very good financial shape things are trending upwards.

I like Kos. He’s improving all the time and has a lot of team spirit (something many of our fans don’t have). For example, Kos is quite effective heading the ball on set plays. He gives 100% and takes the losses to heart. He could have said anything in the interview and a lot of our supporters will criticize the player, team and manager no matter what.

Until our experts quit their day jobs and become available to manage the team I think what we’ve got is the most promising situation of any top club for the coming years. I will be placing money on Arsenal to win the PL next season. Now if only we could do away with the moaners…

    • Hunter says:

He is not good at heading balls on set plays which is why we keep giving up stupid goals. He can’t even track him man properly.

    • tommy says:

Close? NO we are not. Not with conceding the WORST % of goals from set pieces in the entire EPL, 56%. That means we are worse at defending set pieces than ALL of the teams in the league, even those being relegated. We’re not close to winning anything mate until this glaring problem gets addressed. And this is where getting to where we can win something gets tricky–because it’s not just buying one experienced defender that will fix this–it requires an entire team concept to defend set pieces–and Wenger has shown when he buys players he does not care how the defend set pieces

  • WC says:

You know where it went wrong Kos? The 8 penalties Arsenal have given away – the most in the league, of which I’m sure Laurent has given away half of those. Seriously I’ve never seen a player give away so many penalties in a season.

    • Charlie says:

True. Regardless of how well he defends, and he’s not good enough at defending set pieces, the amount of mistakes he makes means that he is too much of a liability.
