Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen is back. After featuring for the reserves in mid-week against Manchester United, the defender is ready for the senior squad if Arsene Wenger decides to pick him.
Speaking to Arsenal TV Online after the game, the Belgium International explained it was very frustrating to spend months on the sidelines especially since it was initially thought that his injury would have kept him out of action for only a few weeks.
Again confessing that injuries can help you learn more about the game, the 25-year old added that it is now up to the manager to decide whether he is fit enough to finally make his comeback in the senior squad although it will probably not be this week.
And on next season, the centre back concluded by saying that it is very important to be fully fit before holidays so as to be back for pre-season fresh and ready for action.
On his recovery, Vermaelen said:
I felt really good today. I’m happy to be back, it’s always good to be back on the pitch, first game after a long injury, it’s always special. It’s been a hard time, a difficult time [but] happy to be back now.
The injury is fine, I didn’t feel anything today, I could play the all 90 minutes without any problems so I’m really pleased with that. I’m fit at the moment, I feel great and, in training, I don’t feel any problems, so physically I feel good.
[The last seven months] were really frustrating. In the beginning I thought it was only one week or a few days [but] every time I had a setback, in total maybe six or seven, so it was a hard time.
But from that kind of situations you learn, you learn a lot because your mental strength will be better because you always have to focus.
It’s up to the boss – he makes the decisions. I’m available at the moment so I hope I will be back in the squad soon and that is my target.
It’s always important for every player to have a good pre-season but for me it’s good good to be fit before [the] holiday. I can go into the holiday with a clear head and come back fresh.
