Andrey Arshavin: Why I did so well defensively against Manchester United

Arsenal midfielder Andrey Arshavin was delighted with the way he helped the defensive department in last Sunday’s game against Manchester United, at the Emirates.

Writing on his official website, the Russia International started by explaining that the game was no different than the ones the Gunners drew or lost recently as they enjoyed plenty of possession and created a number of good chances in the final third.

On the second half, the 29-year old added that the Red Devils needed to come forward to get something out of the game knowing that Chelsea were so close in the table but Arsenal’s brave defending made sure that they failed to find the equalising goal.

And on his personal game and the way he helped the defensive department, the Russian concluded by saying that he did well after being more aware of his defensive duties, made some nice tackles and was delighted with the positive comments of the fans after the game.

After the 1-0 win, Arshavin said:

This match was important for both teams. It’s a crucial match every year. Besides, Manchester United feel Chelsea’s breath on their neck, striving to seize the first spot.

I think that this game wasn’t much different from the previous games of Arsenal. As always, we possessed the territorial advantage, kept the ball under control, sending many dangerous lobbed balls during the first half.

We had some good chances. It’s usually our opponent’s counterattacks that pose a threat. But their counterattacks didn’t turn out in the first half. Perhaps, one can only point out their threats from corners.

In the second half, the game evolved differently. Our rival began to possess the ball. They were losing. They had to go forward. As I said, Chelsea is coming after them. They had to score.

Therefore, we focused on defending our goal during the last ten minutes of the match. I am glad that we didn’t allow them to score. I’m happy that today we managed to get this win.

It happened that I paid more attention to playing defense in this game. This clash turned out in such a way that I had to play according to the situation.

My tackles? Well, yes! They turned out great today. I’m glad that the fans appreciated them, I suppose that my sliding tackles came out just fine.

its d best performance of him besides the barca game

  • Uz says:

And yet this same player has come under so much criticisms from arsenal fans.Ironical

    • swazigooner says:

Well that’s because this guy has had his worst season in an arsenal top….One good game doesn’t justify the other 20 horrible performances hes had

      • Jes says:

Arshavin not performing is something very much within the imagination of the fans. He is not consistent, agreed, and he goes missing for certain periods in a game but his contribution has been massive. Amongst the attacking players, he has clocked the most number of minutes and his assists are second only to fabregas this season. You’re going to argue that the other attacking players were injured this season, that might be true which all the more validates his importance for the team. His goals and assists together is higher than samir nasri, so that speaks volumes. So horrible is too strong a word for this player, although it can be used for the team as a whole.

        • Monty says:

Good response Jes.. I was going to argue the same thing Swazigooner.. think the criticism of Arshavin has been harsh, one thing you didnt mention is that he is also only 2 goals off his highest tally of goals in a season for The Arsenal.. I hope he stays to be honest.

    • trugun says:

Hardly Ironic, AA has had just a couple of games where he has turned up and put in a shift, the vast majority of games this season he’s played without committment to the cause.

  • Bob the Gunner says:

When it doesn’t matter anymore, you guys came out just fine…

  • Arselicked says:

Maybe it could teach the team something for the future.

The team needs a reference point like this one

    • 9jagun says:

      good one friend

  • Emmanuel says:

wonderful perfomance from the little Russian. I don’t want to see leave arsenal now bc he is talent and has experience.i love him.

  • meditation says:

Arshavin was doing a good job for his compatriot Mr chelsea`s bank and probably partly arshavins bank. He cant fool everyone. He should have fought like that when arsenal needed him. He has taken the piss this season. Good stats are not good enough when your not showing fight. He didnt get a goal or set up a goal vs man u but he shown fight which helped to defeat them.

  • matt says:

My god he was better defensively than Clichy was in the game, Andrey for left back anyone?

keep fighting 5′4 russian, we still love you

  • Highb gunners says:

Arshavin need to stay at arsenal, bcous he can distribute pass if you want him to, but wenger his not using him where he want and his not happy with that, i think that his why is so fluppy… this season..

  • Pure says:

NOTE – Arshavin has more assists then Fabregas this season

  • The Shining says:

Arshavin has been better than everyone in the team except Van Persie, Walcott, Djourou and Wilshere this season and despite playing poorly, he has bagged a fair number of assists, imagine what he could do if a little more fight was injected into him. Arsenal fans who want him gone for some UNEXPERIENCED AND UNPROVEN 17-year old to replace him must be completely stupid if you ask me, they’re just asking for the same mistakes to be repeated.

  • mutabazi eric says:

I wish Arshavin to tackle at every match as he he did againist Man U at least for the remaining games!

    • phelan says:

      This is the truth!

  • Ray says:

How nice if you can play like that every game.
