Thomas Vermaelen on the team-mate who gave him good advice during injury

Arsenal Interactive - Squad SelectorThomas Vermaelen and Didier Drogba

Tomorrow, Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen will start from the first minute when the Gunners face Aston Villa in their penultimate game of the English Premier League.

Speaking to Arsenal TV Online, the Belgium International confessed his target was to be back in action before the end of the season in order to relax during the holidays and enjoy a healthy preparation during pre-season.

The centre back confessed it was strange to be back in the squad for the Stoke City game last week, to travel and be in the hotel with the rest of the team and to listen to manager Arsene Wenger doing his team talk before the game and at half time.

On who helped him during the eight months he spent on the sidelines, the 25-year old revealed striker Robin van Persie was one who was full of advice as of course he has had his share of injuries in the last couple of years.

On his recovery, Vermaelen said:

[Initially] they said it’s only a few weeks but I had always a setback so I thought I would be fit in a few weeks all the time.

Always in my mind I thought I could play this season but in the end we came closer to the ending of the season and then sometimes I thought it’s difficult to play again.

My target was to be fit before holidays and show the boss I’m back, show him that I’m sharp, that was target in the first place and I reached that.

I was happy to be involved in the squad [for the Stoke game], it’s a step up of course, you first you go outside with the physical coach Tony Colbert and then you come back in the squad, in training and last week I was involved with the team.

It’s a little bit strange, you travel again, go into the hotel, you go back in the dressing room, the talks from the boss and those kind of things, so, it’s good and I’m really happy to be there again.

[Who helped me during the injury lay-off?] I spoke a lot with Robin [van Persie] as we speak Dutch with each other, he had a few injuries as well, he gave me some good advice.

The current medical staff at arsenal should be struck off

  • Foxy says:

    RVP should be captain

    • Gooner says:

Yes, I mean, what team has a captian that would rather be somewhere else thenn skippering his side? No offence to Cesc who is one of our best players, but captian he is not. Rvp only one to skipper Arsenal.

      • tommy says:

Wenger had to bribe him with the armband to get him to stay. That’s no way to run a team

  • jul says:

yES RVP should be captain. Fab has shown little commitment to our course so far and VP is the man for the job.

    • Dave says:

I’m sure the refs are to blame for the lost in Bolton and Stoke matches…

  • Aaron says:

Good to have Vermaelen back and Van Persie is a true leader for the Gunners…He and Vermaelen will lead Arsenal to glory next year if they both stay healthy.

  • Felix-Ayo says:

Absolutely! RVP’s commitment to ARSENAL course as been fantastic. I think he deserve the captaincy. FABREGAS, has allowed his indecision to soil his professionalism, I really feel his plight.

  • Arsenal Future Manager says:

    1st
    Karim Benzema to Arsenal
    Jan Vertonghen to Arsenal
Fabregas should stay but of he goes then:
    Hazard to Arsenal

    And we will win something,
    2nd
Switch to 4-4-2 or stick with 4-2-3-1 it’s all the same when used like this:

    ———- Szczesny
    Sagna Koscielny Vermaelen (Vertonghen)
    ——— Song – Fabregas
    Walcot —- RVP — Nasri
    ———– (Benzema)

    ———- Szczesny
    Sagna Koscielny Vermaelen (Vertonghen)
    ———— Song
    Walcot ————– Nasri
    ———- Fabregas
    ——- RVP – (Benzema)

If Fabregas goes then ”Van Persie” Captain, ”Vermaelen” Vice Captain

    ———- Szczesny
    Sagna Koscielny Vermaelen (Vertonghen)
    ———— Song
    Walcot ————– Hazard
    ———— Nasri
    ——— RVP – (Benzema)

    • Kaio says:

      yeah, and where is Wilshere??

      • Arsenal Future Manager says:

”Wilshere, Frimpong, Ramsey” as back up, they are the future, but I think any one would rather Fabregas over Wilshere, and even if Fabregas goes i’ll rather Nasri so Wilshere needs to deal with been a back up, if he was at any other team he probably wont have played 46 or 47 games now, and we have loads of injuries so he would still get to play alot

    • bc says:

Have to say if we got vertonghen and i doubt that very much it won’t be him playing left back it will be vermaelen.

      • Arsenal Future Manager says:

No way ”Sagna-Koscielny-Vermaelen-Vertonghen” even at Ajax Vermaelen pushed Vertonghen to LB or DM, he only played CB after Vermaelen left and even for Belgium Vermaelen is the 1st choice CB with Kompany, while Vertonghen plays LB or DM,

  • bc says:

Does anyone else get the feeling that wenger might stick with his current 6 centre backs? That he might sell bendtner but then bring back Vela to compensate? That he might sell denilson but instead of buying will bring Frimpong and coquelin into the squad as cover for song. I honestly think that yes he may release or sell some redwood namely denilson bendtner rosicky eboue and Almunia but i think that will be all. I honestly think the only players coming in are jenkinson and almalifitano we might get Gaimero at the expenses of sunu and coquelin either permanent or for a year. I think the shortfalls for the sale of the redwood i mentioned will be filled by botelho Lansbury Frimpong mannone and Vela.

    • Leon says:

Yes – then we can push for mid table mediocrity !

  • bc says:

    Redwood. ……….Bloody predictive text

  • matt says:

Well at least that’s 1 positive to having an injury prone player :P

  • Leon says:

Must not be critical of Wenger on here ! What a load of crap !

  • Leon says:

Arsenal will finish fourth – another great season of footballing success. George Graham might not have played the frankly boring football that Wenger plays but he was a far better man manager who could motivate the team. Wenger’s team isa reflection if him – no fight, spineless and chokes at every challenge posed to them. They succeed they get paid extremely well and they fail and get paid extremely well – no motivation
